On April 15, 2013 there was a horrific scene that occurred on the street in the city of Boston. This all happened while a widely recognized event took place which was the Boston Athletic Associations yearly marathon. Many people attend this marathon each year, in 2013 it is said that 38,708 entries were received to run in the marathon. With such a large amount of people attending this you can see why it would be important for a terrorists to plot an attack, such an attack would devastate and scare not only people around the Boston area but nationwide. Two brothers by the name of Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev were affiliated with a foreign terrorist organization that has roots in Chechnya, had planted two bombs near the finish line at the …show more content…
A friend of one of the attackers had seen a familiar face on the news, however did not report that he might possibly know the identity of the attackers. Later on Thursday night a police officer was shot and killed which was expected to be the terrorists attempting to flee. However it wasn’t until Friday that police had gotten into a gunfight with the terrorists and shot and killed Dzhokhar Tsarnev, and wounding Tamerlan. The city of Boston was put on lockdown until the last standing attacker was caught after fleeing and escaping authorities. By the end of the night, authorities were notified about the whereabouts of Tamerlan. He was hiding in a boat in someone’s backyard with various wounds. He was later caught where he could face trial for the horrific acts that he and his brother had committed. Every moment since the bombings had occurred the media was covering the story nonstop. The first day the news was covering what exactly had happened on the day of the bombing and trying to figure out who the attackers were. No one knew whether it was Al Qaida or the Taliban, or Hamas or any other terrorists organization. The nation was left with unanswered questions at this point. It wasn’t until later on in the week that the story about this attack began to unfold. News titles such as “Mourning, resolve and quest for answers after deadly Boston Marathon bombs” were covered. There were so many unanswered questions regarding the bombing up
I learned quite a bit about the psychological impact of the Boston Marathon Bombing. After researching the effects, I realized how much trauma these innocent people went through during a moment that was supposed to be joyous. People that were healthy and filled with life were either severely injured or had there life taken away by a senseless act. Some of the injured victims will never be able to walk again, others, never able to see their loved ones again. Martin Richard, an 8-year old boy whose life was taken during the attack, will never get to see his family one more time. The amount of grief the Tsarnev brothers caused can never be taken back and it has left a psychological effect on the viewers and the victims – runners, adults and children.
On April 19, 1995 the world was thrown into shock. Terrorism was not a thing in the United States. It was even more of a shock to find out this terrorist was a resident of the United States. Not only did this tragedy effect the hundreds of people inside the Oklahoma City Murrah building, it also affected billions of rescue workers, families, and loved ones. All the different groups of people affected by this bomb copped in very different ways.
The Boston Marathon bombing was a shocking and devastating event in the history of the United States. In the middle of what was supposed to be a very happy and cheerful event, three people lost their lives and 264 others were injured when two pressure cooker bombs went off near the finish line. Even though this was a truly horrific event, the initial response of the Boston Police Department to the explosions was incredible. Within minutes, additional Emergency Medical Service teams and the Boston Fire Department were rushing to the scene, hotels were evacuated, and police closed down a 15 block area around the blast site. The remaining runners were also redirected to a different area away from the explosion. It was truly impressive to see how well prepared everybody was in the case of an
A total of 19 men, split up in three groups of five and one group of four, passed all airport security checkpoints and boarded four airplanes. They all had knifes of some kind, attacked the cockpit about 30-45 min into the flight, threatened the passengers with fake bombs, and hijacked the plane with the intent on ramming them into important American locations. One hit the North Twin Tower of the World Trade Center, one hit the South Twin Tower of the World Trade Center, another hit the Pentagon, while the last never made it to its destination in Washington D.C., it crashed into a field 20 min from there. The response to the hit of the towers was immediate. Every kind emergency agency rushed to help. However, since they didn’t have standardized procedures on how to deal with something like this and there was no universal or shared radio system, it was utter chaos. Departments struggled to communicate with each other which complicated the task of relaying important information. The New York Times tells us, “Numerous firefighters, police officers and other rescue workers who responded to the initial disaster in Lower Manhattan were killed or injured when the buildings collapsed. Hundreds were treated for cuts, broken bones, burns and smoke inhalation.” (Schmemann,
April 15, 2013 hundreds of innocent Americans were traumatized forever. The 117th annual Boston Marathon was hit with an act of terrorism. Two-hundred-sixty people lost their legs while three people lost their lives. On this day Americans realized how important security is. One thousand federal, state, and local law enforcement personnel sat down and watched surveillance footage for hours tracking the terrorist that caused the Boston Bombing to occur. April 18, 2013 the FBI released footage and images of suspects whose identity was once unknown to gain more knowledge. Due to security footage the men who committed the monstrous act were brought to justice. Without the public surveillance these terrorist would have never been found. The day was absolutely beautiful, sunny with decent temps which made for perfect running condition for the runners during the 117th Boston Marathon, and event held on Patriot’s day to commemorate the battle of Lexington and Concord that had started the Revolutionary War in 1775. 23,000 runners lined up at the starting line in the city of Hopkinton, the first wave of runners started at 9:32. At approximately 2:49 p.m. is when 2 bombs went off, at least 5,600 people still racing towards the finish line at the time of the explosion (History).
One way the bombing increased the study of terrorism in the U.S. is stated by Steve Bucci, of the Heritage Institute. The Heritage Organization is the nation’s largest, most broadly-supported conservative research and educational institution. The commentator of the article, 60 Terrorist Plots Since 9/11: Continued Lessons In Domestic Counterterrorism, Steven Bucci states; “The third most common target was mass gatherings, like the Boston Marathon, nightclubs and bars, and shopping malls” (Bucci). According to Bucci, mass gatherings have been a target for numerous years and the Boston Marathon Bombing could have happened anywhere, from a mall, to another marathon. The Boston Marathon Bombing brought the issue of terrorism in the U.S. back into international spotlight.
This attack was premeditated by Tamerlan Tsarnaev and his brother, Dzhokhar. With the security’s in place since 9/11, this attack could have been prevented. Tamerlan Tsarnaev came to America in 2003 and at that time seemed like a regular individual but then began studying the Koran, complaining against the government, becoming increasingly isolated and confrontational primarily when it involved religion and society. He no longer had any American friends. (Homeland Insecurity) In 2011, Russian intelligence contacted the FBI with concerns that Tsarnaev was becoming radicalized because of a phone conversation they recorded between Tsarnaev and his mother discussing jihad. The FBI investigated this claim and didn’t find any incriminating evidence and deemed him not dangerous. However, he was put on the TIDE list which is a clearinghouse for potential terrorists. This list housed names of 740,000 people but the list wasn’t monitored and rarely used. (Homeland Insecurity) In January 2012, Tsarnaev visited a conservative mosque is Dagestan where it is believe he talked to local militants. This trip didn’t set off any warning signals to the FBI. However, when he landed in JFK Airport in NYC, the Department of Homeland Security contacted Boston’s Joint Terrorism Task Force. Regretfully, the agency reviewed the automatic alert but took no further action. (Homeland Insecurity) Tsarnaev continued to be disruptive in mosques and eventually broke ties with them. He started posting YouTube videos, one titled “Terrorist” that showed militants with assault rifles and another video showing the celebration of jihad fighters after they defeated the infidels. An investigation into why Tsarnaev was able to conduct such attacks was deemed as communication failures between US intelligence and law enforcement. Susan
I have been volunteering at the University of Maryland Medical Center since the summer of my freshman year. As a volunteer at the Cardiac Surgery Intensive Care Unit at the hospital, I am committed to provide excellence in service, work independently and efficiently, and exhibit patient interaction skills. Ever since I have started volunteering at the hospital, I have learned to become more patient and understanding toward the people who I interact with, and consequently, I have become a more sympathetic and compassionate person.
On April 19th 1995 the worst terrorist attack on US soil took place in the heartland of America. The Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma was targeted and almost completely blown to pieces by one enormous homemade bomb. The unthinkable had happened at the beginning of an average day at the office. This day would be remembered for the rest of America's history, unlike any other day, as a blatant attack on the United States government.
Statistically, on average, there have been eleven thousand, seven hundred and ninety-seven acts of terrorism, the category which the Boston Marathon
National terrorism has been the focus of attention since September 11. But now domestic terrorism is becoming increasingly common among hate groups across the nation. Domestic terrorism can be defined as visible crime, or “street crime.” These acts would consist of violent crimes, (acts against people in which injury or death results) property crimes (acts that threaten property held by individuals or the state) and public order crimes. (acts that threaten the general well-being of society and challenger accepted moral principles) It can also however be described as political crime, (criminal acts by or against the government for ideological purposes) which would include the 9/11 and the Oklahoma City bombing.

The death penalty in America has been declining: despite the diminished use, flaws are more apparent than ever. Some of these are racial bias and the execution of innocent people. With a topic like capital punishment the information available can be overwhelming, with as much information that is out there. The words capital punishment and death penalty often have strong emotional opinions, due to being a controversial topic that so many people have different views on.
When we reach our bikes, I review the route to Santa Barbara provided to us by the friendly waitress. Appears like a no brainer. We bike along Ortega Hill Road to Evans Road. From there we turn right onto the Ortega Hill bike path to Jameson Lane. All the way to Olive Mill Road and take a left and continue on the bike path to Channel Drive to the finish line - the Dolphin Statue in Santa Barbara. With Doris’ leg cramp gone, she’s restless and can’t wait to just get there.
