When a person is asked if testing on animals for scientific research is ethical, many people can be divided on the answer to the question. Scientific testing has been a norm in research since the advent of main stream science. For me this is a simple question with a simple answer which is, yes. With groups like PETA, would only tell people their side of the issue, which is that testing on animals is a sin or that it is always done in awful ways. If animal testing was not utilized research for many cures would still to this day being underway. Testing on animals has given humanity many cures and antidotes, saving millions of lives throughout the world. This type of testing, when done humanely has allowed for quicker research in there respective
Countless medical advances have been made as a direct result of animal testing. Cures and preventions of diseases have been discovered and tested for safety by using animals. Vaccines have also been created for various reasons such as influenza, rabies, tetanus, infectious
It is no secret that millions of animals a year are used for medical experimentation. One study “found the number of animals tested rose from 1,566,994 in 1997 to 2,705,772 in 2012” (Casey). It is my belief that researchers use virtue theory to defend their experimentations. While animal activists approach experimentation through the ethics of care. I am against animal experimentation, but I will also provide insight into why people believe it is ethically just.
Thanks to animal research, many diseases that once killed millions of people are now either treatable or curable. Animal testing has not only benefit humans, but animals as well. Some animal testing has lead to life saving and life extending treatments for many of the animals used for testing. A complete alternative to animal testing has yet to be discovered.
Have you ever had a sick relative? If so, have they used medication to help with said illness? Well that medication had to have come from somewhere. Animal testing has help conduct products such as vaccines for smallpox, hypothermia, and other major diseases. Now take into consideration what might have happened to that relative without the medication. As you can tell, animal testing has a positive impact on society, despite what might be claimed to be unjust. I will be explaining why this is so, and how some of the arguments are irrelevant.
Ryley Neal Medical Office Procedures The Ethical Controversy of Animal Testing for Science Animals are used in scientific practices and research labs as test models to help analyze and determine medical advances, such as disease, drug, product, and cosmetic testing studies. Numerous amounts of specific animal species are used, such as; rabbits, rodents, and primates, and even cats and dogs. Although many medical advances have been made due to animal testing, it is considered a highly controversial issue regarding the ethical standpoint of right vs. wrong in society.
The opposition of animal research will use quotes and not back it up with claims of constant research, such as this, In 2003, Peter Singer, professor of bioethics at Princeton University, wrote in the New York Review Books: ¨(D)espite obvious differences between humans and nonhuman animals, we share with the capacity to suffer, and this means that they, like us, have interests. If we ignore or discount their interests, simply on the grounds that they are not members of our species, the logic of our position is similar to that of the most blatant racist or sexists who think that those who belong to their race or sex have superior moral status, simply in virtue of their race and sex, and irrespective of other characteristics or qualities.¨ Look at the quote it stating that if you test on animals then you're no better than a racist or sexist which is highly false, for animal is separate from mankind and shall be treated as so. By using tactics like this quote the writer will try to add other subjects because if you do not agree with it they'll hope you don't agree with the sole topic, by adding racism if you don't like racism then you'll be against animal testing when they compare the two topics. People who disagree will try to convince you but ask again
“ Animal research and testing has played a part in almost every medical breakthrough of the last century. It has saved hundreds of millions of lives worldwide” Joan Ryan, a former UK home office minister, claims that without animal testing, diseases wouldn’t be cured, or there wouldn’t be any treatments for the disease. Without animal testing certain medicines, cures, and biomedical engineering wouldn’t exist or be as proficient. An estimated 26 million animals have been used to test medical vaccines for diseases. Scientists also use animals to test the toxicity of the vaccines. Animal testing may come off as a rather harsh and inhumane form of study when heard about , but without it, global diseases would be spreading faster and possibly everyone will be infected. Nearly every Nobel Prize winner in Physiology or Medicine since 1901 relied on the information based off of animal research. Since animal testing has been used for research purposes many diseases have been cured and are no longer existent and if not cured then the disease is close to being cured.
This may come as a surprise to some, because the advances from animal testing are relatively unknown. Many medical advances have been found because of animal testing, including “penicillin, blood transfusions, insulin (that controls blood sugar levels of diabetics), kidney transplants, and vaccines for polio and meningitis” (Shany 84). These treatments and vaccines would not have been discovered if animal testing had not been used. Not only have treatments and vaccines been found for humans, but treatments for animals have been too, such as the “vaccines for rabies, anthrax, feline leukemia, and canine parvo virus”(Shany 84). All of these medicines and treatments have been found through animal testing, and the world would be in bad shape if they hadn’t found the treatment for most of
Animal testing is a very relevant and debatable moral issue. It is when scientists take animals and run different kinds of test on them to see what reaction occur from the animal. Scientists test drugs, vaccines, and cosmetics on animals before the drug or cosmetic is distributed out for the public to use. Usually, these tests do not just involve one animal during tests, they involve many. This is due to the use of multiple animals for more detailed test results. In 2013, over 100 million animals were used in some sort of testing, whether testing for medical research, or used in a high school science laboratory. (Peta) The article How much does the public support animal research? Depends on the question, shows data that many people do not understand animal testing or are unaware of it. The author of the article, Jeffery Mervis, ran a survey, to see what people thought about animal testing. He did this survey several times. Each time he conducted the survey he would ask the surveyed a question similar to “Do you support or agree with
How many animals have died or been severely injured when being experimented on? Animal testing could kill the cute fluffy things everyone calls animals. Additionally, The people that are testing and harming animals do not even own them so why do they even have rights. Also, after doing these terrible experiments, the scientist say animals are a lot like humans,. To summarize, animal testing is cruel and harmful to the test subjects.
Over the last couple hundred years, our world has expanded beyond its horizons and the new equipment and advanced technology has allowed humans to succeed in many areas, but has also damaged the basic ethics and morals in some of us. Today on television, we see the over dramatized body spray commercials or a famous celebrity advertising their favorite shampoo and stating its claims, but what most do not know is that a couple or couple hundred, animals were killed to approve, by law, of that product. This act is called animal testing, which is the method or experiment that forces an animal to go through any harm or distress (Thew). I do not agree with this practice simply because it harms innocent animals for products that we do not need
Animal testing has provided us with many life saving treatments. By using animals to test medications, scientists are able to create new drugs and find cures. Without animal testing, the cure for many diseases would not exist and thousands of people
According to Sean O’Neil, the author of the article “Why Animal Research is Still Necessary” says “Almost every major medical achievement has relied on animal testing at some stage in the process …. as were the polio vaccine, lithium and penicillin.” (O'Neil). Just so you know, penicillin has saved 200 million lives since it’s invention in 1928 (Alexander Fleming). Another example is blood transfusions. Dr. Ananya Mandal, MD says the first successful blood transfusion was done by Richard Lower in 1665. He tested blood transfusions on dogs. Since then, blood transfusions have saved over 1 billion lives, which is significantly higher number than the entire population of the United States (Mandal). If animal testing was not used, then forget about 1.2 billion people getting saved. Ha whatever, that’s just the entire world population of 1850. Some more examples of medicines or knowledge about conditions or diseases being found by animal testing is breast cancer, childhood leukemia, chronic myeloid leukemia, lung cancer, Hepatitis C, heart disease/stroke, epilepsy, and many more (Animal Research Benefits). Not only does an abounding number of animal tests lead to medical breakthroughs, but sometimes a new cure for animals is discovered. An example is insulin. Both people and dogs suffer from diabetes. Insulin was tested on dogs and now helps people and
Animal testing has been dated back to the BC ages. According to Hajar, experiments were performed on live animals by well-known ancient greek scientists such as Aristotle and Erasistratus. Animals became test subjects throughout many experiments in order to thoroughly comprehend pathology, physiology, pharmacology, and especially anatomy. However more recently animal testing has become a main source of testing for biomedical research and testing of pharmaceutical drugs. As animal testing has become a more common method, laws have been put in place in efforts to make it a more humane practice. In 1938, due to the release of a pharmaceutical drug that became poison to humans, the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act was put in place. The act
Animal testing is a cruel and inhumane thing to do to a living organism. PETA believes that during experiments the animals are not protected from suffering and there are no laws that are in place to protect them. The animals in laboratories are treated like cheap disposable laboratory equipment. In fact, more than 100 million animals are killed in the United States because they are victims of harsh and deadly experiments that torture and kill these defenseless animals. Before their death, some animals are forced to participate in experiments that require them to
