Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) is a congenital heart defect that presenting at birth. It represents about 10% of cases of congenital heart defect, it occurs in 3 to 6 infants per 10,000 births.
Tetralogy of Fallot was first described in 1671 by Niels Stenson. But William Hunter is the first person that describe the large outlet of ventricular septal defect with sub pulmonary and pulmonary stenosis. The further description was made by a French physician, Etienne – Louis Arthur Fallot, after whom it’s named in the year of 1888.
TOF consists of 4 defects
1. Ventricular septal defect – malformation of intraventricular septa
2. Pulmonary stenosis – narrowing of the pulmonary aorta
3. Overriding aorta – blood from both ventricles can enter aorta
