Thailand and the Philippines are two very contrasting nations in terms of political systems and government structures. Thailand has a constitutional monarchy whereas the Philippines are a constitutional republic. A commonality between the two South East Asian countries is that they have experienced, or are currently under the rule of a noteworthy, but controversial leader. For Thailand, Thaksin’s reign as prime minister from 2001-2006 was monumental for Thailand for two reasons. One, Thaksin was the first Thai prime minister to serve a full term in office and two; Thailand saw vast economic progress under Thanksin’s term, coining the term “Thaksinomics.” Duterte is popular for his bold statements and rampant killings in efforts to reduce the presence of drugs in the Philippines. He won the presidency by a landslide, and despite his authoritative politics, he has a stellar approval rate from Filipino citizens. Despite their differences in government systems, Thaksin and Duterte took similar approaches to resolving the drug problem rampant within their countries. Regardless of the mass killings carried out under Duterte’s administration and his authoritative approach, he has a high approval rate because a vast number of Filipino people support his stance on crime reduction. Thaksin, despite his economic success in relieving Thailand from its debt, is not widely favored due to corruption charges in terms of finances and human rights violations. In addition to this, he
Ruling a state, a country is really not an easy task. The head of the government should really have his organize and well-planned plan so the organization of its each concept will operate systematically. Taking care of estimated 104 million Filipinos, their lives are all in the governments hands. It is not only the people of this country who’ll be depending in the government but the whole nation, including its resources, establishments, employment and others. The fact that the actions applied by the government will reflect to its people and the whole country, the steps that people who have their powers will take, will be the representation of what will happen to the whole nation. The actions, steps and decisions of the government should be
An Authoritarian leader cannot be replaced by citizens by choosing freely among various competitors in a democratic election. Authoritarianism in the Philippines is highly commended for its vast effect on the country’s economy and well being. Ferdinand Marcos issued Proclamation No. 1081 declaring the Martial Law in the Philippines on September 21, 1972. He issued the said law to justify the need for Authoritarian rule to foster economic growth and prevent leftist insurgencies (Kushida, 2003). As Marcos imposes Authoritarianism in the Philippines, different reactions arise in the Filipino citizens. Majority of the Filipino people learned to accept the new reform systems proposed by the government. But even though these people support the martial law, there are still a number of citizens who question the president’s stated justification and continue to doubt in his true
Thailand has fallen under the rule of another coup, just as Scotland fell under the rule of Macbeth. Thailand has fallen under a disruptive government who can’t seem to stay in power. Just as Scotland, when the generals started to attack the king so did Thailand feel their wrath. After many attempts in Scotland and Thailand one person finally took control, but for how long will it stay? Power so strong yet so fickle in nature both countries are having trouble deciding what to do next in the light of their new power. Just as Macduff struggles to find his way so does the king of Thailand for what he will do next. The generals on both countries have an immense amount of power and have bid for the throne. With their bid for power has thrown both
Indonesia and Philippines have similarities yet very different political system even though there are located in the Southeast Asia region. Both states are considered to be electoral democratic regime according to Larry Diamond’s sixfold typology (Dayley & Neher, 2013, p. 21). Interestingly, both states received a relatively good freedom rating in Southeast Asia by Freedom House in 2016, which is 3- partly free. Thus, Indonesia and Philippines are chosen as the research subject in this assignment as the non-democratic regime states for the comparison analysis.
Over the years, the Philippines has gone from being one of the richest countries in Asia to being one of the poorest. It has experienced growth and development since World War II. The current administration under President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is aiming for a more rapid growth in the coming years. In 2004, the Philippine economy grew by 6.1% surprising everyone. In 2005, the Philippine peso appreciated by 6%, the fastest in the Asian region for that year. At present, the administration is meeting its expected target growth and is continually looking positive for the future.
Ultimate Thai nugs are tied to the sticks using stringy fibers pulled from the cannabis plant itself. After being secured, these nugs are often dipped in hash oil for added potency. Ultimate Thai cannabis strain has a sweet tropical flavor accented by a pungent skunky exhale that’s just a little spicy. The aroma is sweet and floral with a fruity effect that quickly takes a spicy pungent turn as the nugs are burned.
In Philippine politics, the ultimate goal is to have professional officials in the government so that the country will be ruled properly and be successful. For this to be achieved, officials who are in high positions should give power to those who are responsible enough and can prove that they are worthy of their given position. But in reality, this ideal image is somehow violated because of nepotism.
In the beginning of November, President Donald Trump will be traveling to Asia because of the rising tensions over North Koreas nuclear and missile programs. During his trip to Asia, he plans on seeing the President of the Philippines to possibly discuss human rights, rule of law and important developments. Donald Trump has praised the Philippine leader over the phone in May for doing an "unbelievable job on the drug problem.” Although, Duterte’s drug crackdown led to thousands of people being killed. Since the President of the United States praised him over the phone he has said that he would deal with U.S. President "in the most righteous way.” This is important because this could mean future cooperation, interdependence and mutual understanding
highlights a dichotomy between what is supposed to be a “good” Filipino and a “bad” one.
The Philippines was a country ruled by dictator Ferdinand Marcos from 1917-1989 (Kenney 78). Many things could have happened to prevent Marcos from continuing his rule. These included strong guerrilla forces that were trying to
Another is that Filipinos have a culture of apathy and tend to use religion incorrectly and passively. People depend on religion and settle for what’s okay. In addition, the initial reaction of Filipinos to change is resistance, and this is why the country does not necessarily progress, or at least, progress at a continuous rate. Then, countries like Spain and Portugal only rode the “economic tiger” after “they realized that the only way to survive was change” (3.Y). Plus, according to another critic, the Philippines already had the experience of being under the parliamentary system during the time of Marcos which only resulted in a People Power Revolution. So why should the country bother going back to that? (4.Y)
Thailand is the only Southeast Asian country that was never colonized by a European country. In fact, in the Thai language, the name of the country is Prathet Thai which means “land of the free.” The country of Thailand is one that is heavily visited by tourists from all around the world. What makes so attractive to tourists is that it’s a country so rich with history and traditions, one with such original foods that make your mouth water from just the thought, and it has such a diverse range of music that leaves your ears ringing with the noises of the people. “There are about 35,000 temples in Thailand.” Visiting them requires modest clothing, meaning no shorts or sleeveless shirts (Swattnani, 1).
Looking back to the previous government systems in different periods in Philippine history, we can see that our present government system is somehow shaped and patterned from the previous systems that prevailed in our country. Pre – historically we have seen how they established their government and basically, we can say that it is far more primitive than the present system that we have. However, the basic principles like the consultation of the datus to the elders can somehow be seen in the present by the presence of political advisers where our president consults aside from the members of the senate and the congress. The barangay system
In modern times, the Philippines has been a central ally in the United States’ Asian and Pacific policies. The government structure is similar to that of the United States, including a legislative, judicial, executive branch that independent in their roles. Since becoming a nation independent from the United States, the Philippines has seen its share of success and failure. In the past three years the government has dealt with natural disasters, terrorism, and Chinese aggression. While the Philippine and United States governments have generally been cordial and cooperative, the Philippine president is currently weighing the decision to cut ties with the United States and align his country with China.
Political dynasty is a well known method of politicians in the Philippines wherein the members of the family is made also a member of the government in order for them to not lose power but to gain more power. This act is an unfair and unjust because the government is not a business that a family can run by themselves, but the government is for all and other people should be given chances wherein they can be the one that leads a community.
