“Seek the good in others and the best you will find.” In the short story, “Thank You, Ma'am” by Langston Hughes, Mrs.Jones lives by this quote. When a raggedy boy runs up behind you and steals your pocketbook you naturally would think,”he is not a good boy.” Well when this happened to Mrs. Jones one night she had a different approach. She sought the good in others by looking past the bad, giving second chances and kindness. She shows this when she took Roger in and taught him a lesson. From this story, we can all learn the important lesson of seeking the good in others. To begin, Mrs.Jones seeks the good in others by looking past the bad. One way she did this was by being understanding with Roger. Even though it was terrible what Roger …show more content…
One way she shows this, is when she lets Roger in her home. It is important to notice that she wants to get to know the good Roger and not the one that tried to steal her pocketbook. Furthermore, she trusts Roger. This is significant because she just left her pocketbook sitting out not paying attention to it or Roger. This shows lots of trust. Another reason, she gave Roger food. I wonder if she did this because she wanted to help Roger become a better person. Briefly, everybody deserves a second chance to become a better person. Furthermore,Mrs. Jones seeks the good in others because she is always kind. She taught Roger a lesson. For example,”And next time, do not make the mistake of latching onto my pocket book nor anybody else's for that matter...” or “behave yourself, boy”. This shows she is serious about teaching Roger a lesson. In addition, she gave Roger money. It takes a true kind person to do that. This makes me realize that Mrs.Jones wants to be kind and help Roger. In conclusion, kindness can help you seek the good in others. In short, Mrs. Jones is a great role model by seeking the good in others. Looking past the bad, giving second chances, and kindness are characteristics that help people seek the good in others. Maybe the world would be a better place if, people found the gold in others instead of the dirt. It is important to seek the good in
George Saunders and David Foster Wallace mention the importance of being kind to one another and the steps necessary in graduation speeches. Both writers state that acting in kindness, ultimately leads to new freedoms and creates an enlightened human being.

In Thank You, M’am by Langston Hughes, Mrs. Jones treated Roger better and kinder after taking him in. Evidence of this is on p54 paragraph 43 where the author states: “‘Eat some more, son,’ she said.” This supports the claim because it shows that she cares for his well being, and health. It also shows that she wants him to have energy and not be hungry. She also wanted to treat him with a ten cent cake. Another piece of evidence is on p55 paragraph 44. The author states: “‘Now here, take this ten dollars and buy yourself some blue suede shoes.’” This supports the claim because it shows that she cares enough to get him what he wants, even though they just met. It also shows that she is willing to sacrifice money for him to be happy, and hopefully
“Be kind to one another because you might just change their way of living” (unknown). At Red Sammy’s truck stop, the grandmother converses with Sammy about the lack of good people in the world, blaming the down-turn on others while neglecting her flaws (O’Connor 205). This irony in her character demonstrates the ability an individual has to label themselves, in a vacuum, as good or evil and the effect this can have on those that don’t know that person. In her waning hours, the grandmother, despite the murders of family in the background, attempts to bribe, reason with, and flatter the Misfit in a desperate attempt to save her own life (Evans 6). This same woman had earlier commented on the lack of good people in the world and she has regressed to using whatever means necessary to attempt to preserve her life.

She takes him back to her place and feeds him, and gives him 10 dollars. Then he leaves the house and goes to buy the shoes. The theme of “Thank You, Ma’am” by Langston Hughes is how you should give someone another chance so you see if they are trustworthy as shown how he(Roger) had a chance to run or stay in the house, and how he was so close by the purse and a place where Mrs. Jones can see him just in case he did grab the purse.
To achieve success in life you have to be nice, and be kind to others. “And you can get so much more done when people are being nice to you and you’re nice to them .” (139) It’s like the golden rule, treat people the way you want to be treated.”It means if you see somebody struggling with something, help them with it.” (139) By helping people you’re being nice.
Some people enjoy sitting on their couches and watching the news. They watch stories about people committing random acts of kindness, but they don’t ever perform them. THe people who do take action are extraordinary, like Mrs. Jones in, “Thank You Ma’am,” by Langston Hughes. In the story, Mrs. Jones pursues an act of kindness towards Roger - a troubled teen. Yet, Mrs. Jones didn’t know about his family background, she was just kind for the sake of being kind. That is shown as a theme of the piece. The theme of “Thank You Ma’am” is, be kind, because one day, someone might need it because you don’t know what they’re going through, they might be neglected, and your kindness has influence on others.

In life acts of modesty and kindness go a long way in the eyes of society, as they are influential for the world’s younger generations. This is why for July’s act of kindness I performed an admirable act in order to possibly influence the others around me to do the same. This type of considerate act is what makes our world prosper through the bad and reminisce in the good by showing how people should treat one another. Since I am a counselor in training at a camp in Long Island, I am responsible for watching over a group of children that are between the ages of ten and twelve years old. Of course at this age in a young childs life, the children are like sponges in the way in which they absorb information from others around them. This is why
In the short story of “Thank You, Ma’am” by Langston Hughes, Mrs. Jones was wise to trust Roger. This was proven through her past experience of being immoral and basing her decision on it. Also, Roger was in desperate need for help and the positive change that occured in Roger deemed Mrs. Jones wise to trust Roger. Mrs. Jones’s decision to trust Roger was justified because she was able to understand him through her past experience. She realized that the boy was making the same mistake as she did in the past. For instance, in the story, she saids,“I have done things, too, which I would not tell you, son” (Hughes 24). From this sentence, we can infer that one of the reasons why Mrs. Jones trusted him is because she also have done shameful things in the past and she wants
“There will always be people who will hurt you. Still, trust them but be careful.”-Gabriel Garcia Marquez. This can be hard to our civilization today. Society judges people based on what they did, and their actions, and not trust who they really are. Many people in this world do bad and are really good, they just express their emotions through anger and hate. In the short story, Thank You M’am, by Langston Hughes, the protagonist Roger, tries to steal Mrs. Jones pocketbook, and instead of taking him to jail, she saw that he was hungry and dirty so she brought him into her house. She made him clean his face, and then she fed him and gave him $10, when he had to go. The theme of the story is always trust what is within others, and not based off their characteristics.

She then sends Roger outside the door and gives him ten dollars for his desired blue suede shoes. Mrs. Jones took Roger home because she wanted to make him learn my showing some motherly care.

Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones is a kind, yet bold woman who yells at Roger and then takes Roger into her care for a little while. Mrs. Jones feeds him and talks to him, later telling Roger that she, too, has done wrong things that she regrets. Because of this kind and dynamic woman, Roger changes and learns a lesson of respect and citizenship after Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones gives him money to
