Music is a unique way of expressing one’s self, though ideas can become recycled and borrowed by other artists. These days, a particularly older person could hear a newly-released song and find the music to be familiar. An artist can simply borrow the music from an older song and then incorporate it into a new song of their own. Many artists and songwriters nowadays use this technique in their own music. Say an older person was to hear the smash hit “Shape of You” by songwriter and singer Ed Sheeran. They would hear a song that they once treasured from their days in the club. The song “No Scrubs” by a high-selling music trio of the 1990’s, called TLC, once wrote a song that contains that same music. This is a perfect representation of the idea of reused music.
Imagine the number one song of the year with the most downloads, streaming numbers and views on Youtube could not be nominated for a Grammy. Up until June 2014, artists could not be nominated for such an award unless the song was completely their own, meaning there was no sampling of past music. This may not sound like a big deal until songs like “SOS” by Rihanna or “Ice Ice Baby” by Vanilla Ice became chart topping tracks, and are both derived from older songs. Mark Ronson, music producer and DJ, speaks about how sampled music has changed the way generations discover music, as well as how creative ideas flourish from sampling other artist’s music. In this TED talk “How sampling transformed music,” Ronson gives his opinion on how artists transform
A huge turkey piping hot on the middle of the table surrounded by stuffing, mash potatoes, cranberry sauce, bread rolls, and corn on the cob. I always thought everyone had the same type of Thanksgiving. Where everyone gets their turkey, drowns the turkey in gravy, and sits down to watch the football game. Too my surprise, that isn’t how it is for my classmates. I realize now that Thanksgiving varies in every household
Sampling is a technique that many artists have used for decades, when given the opportunity to record a new track. Sampling has transformed the music industry, by allowing an artist to broaden their horizons, and give people the ability to have a different outlook towards a particular song. Often times
COURSEWORK FOR CONTRACT LAW (MUSIC*) *On what basis does the inclusion of samples of a recording made by *Pink Floyd constitute an infringement of copyright? In civil law regarding copyright, there are two types of infringement; primary and secondary. Primary is concerned with the unauthorised
Ever since I was a little girl, New York City always seemed like a place that was magical. My family’s TV on Thanksgiving was always broadcasting the enormous balloons, extravagant floats, and millions of people lining the streets of the city for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade. Freshman year, excited squeals and giggles erupted from my brother and I after our parents told us that we would be visiting New York City for the first time to witness the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. After several months of waiting and lots of turbulence, our plane hit the landing with a thunk at Laguardia airport and reality set in: we were in the city. Walking out of the airport was absolutely surreal. The sights, sounds, and smells surrounded my family and
Beginning at 0:09 in “My Name is”, Eminem uses sample appeared at 2:31 in “I Got the…” as a major rhythm for the whole song. Sampling is one of the most common elements in the hip-hop music. Sampling is the act of using recordings of other music in making new music. In the hip-hop music history, sampling is always a controversial topic legally and musically since sampling relates to the issue of the copyright of the music. Does sampling violate the other musicians’ copyright? Does sampling threaten the innovation of the music? Those questions are the most sensitive debates about sampling. Sampling begins in mid-1970s, when DJs mixed between particular parts of records, especially the breakdowns, to inspire dancers in the party. The technique, such as spinning and scratching the record while it played, can be considered as an early form of sampling in hip-hop music. In the mid-1980s, the primary use of “sampling” as a basis of the beat is a main shift in production. “La Di Da Di” produced by Slick Rick and Doug E Fresh is probably the most sampled song in hip-hop. Sampling has three “layers”, which are the sound, the reference and the intertextuality. The artist may use sampling to refer the older piece’s context or refer to other people’s use of the same sample. There are some famous cases regarding sampling in the hip-hop history. For example, “Pretty Women” produced by 2 Live Crew was sued for using Roy Orbison’s song. As a result, 2 Live Crew won on the basis
The truth behind the tradition is surprising. Thanksgiving and the Pilgrims seem to go together, but the truth is, the Pilgrims never held an autumnal Thanksgiving feast. However the Pilgrims did have a feast in 1621, after their first harvest, and it is this feast, which people often refer to as "The First Thanksgiving". This feast was never repeated, though, so it can't be called the beginning of a tradition, nor was it termed by the colonists or "Pilgrims" a Thanksgiving Feast. In fact, a day of thanksgiving was a day of prayer and fasting, and would have been held any time that they felt an extra day of thanks was called for. Nevertheless, the 1621 feast has become a model that we think of for our own
Introduction In the musical sense, sampling is when a segment of music is taken from an original recording and is inserted, sometimes repetitively, in a new recording. A sample can be any type of media that is pre-recorded, from classical pieces of music, to rock guitar riffs. The origins of music sampling predate the 1980 's, when hip-hop was first brought on the scene. Some say that sampling has been around much longer than some think, steering to the fact that jazz musicians have always imitated each other 's riffs. In 1961, after being influenced by many other musicians who had experimented with sound and recording, James Tenney took it a step further by talking an existing popular song and changing it completely. His “Collage #1” took Elvis Presley 's recording of “Blue Suede Shoes”, took out sections, swapping them with others and played them along with the tempo of the song. Many could argue that this was the beginning of music sampling. Although that was the beginning, music sampling has only gained mainstream popularity through the Hip-hop/rap and electronic genres. Even though sampling is a very popular thing to do now in the digital age, it doesn 't come without it 's complications. These include many claiming that sampling is unoriginal and doesn 't need any musical creativity. Nevertheless, there are many points to counter-act these arguments including, generating interest for unknown music and encouraging musical experimentation. In this essay I will
Good afternoon LOGS leaders, We will be hosting a Thanksgiving Pot Luck on 15 November 2017 at the UPH Lounge.
Some corporations appear to be strategically finding approaches that enable them to file for sampling lawsuits as a scheme to increase their cashflows. Frank Ocean’s “Super Rich Kids” samples from Mary J. Blige’s “Real Love” to which the record label, TufAmerica, had filed for copyright infringement. The record label insisted that Ocean did not secure a license to use “Real Love”, which the label only owns 3.15% of the song. TufAmerica also sued Kanye West for sampling from Eddie Bo’s “Hook & Sling” and “claimed that although West’s labels paid a licensing fee, they ‘failed and refused to enter into written license agreements that accounted for their multiple other uses of ‘Hook & Sling’” (Newman, 2014, para. 5). This record label was known
Then you can manipulate in many ways to create new sounds. For example as shown in 5m 38s, this create a whole new varieties of songs like “Nutta” Uk apache and Shy- fx and “New Style” L Double and Younghead. It’s very interesting to me how one piece of music can have such a ripple effect that can create new varieties of music like Jungle. Even though the Amen Break has changed, I think you can still recognized the sample, because you can still hear the same instruments in the new music that you hear in the original as heard in 5m 27s. The sample in 5m 27 sounds more chopped or separated which makes it sound slower but also adds more changes. Similarly, in 5m 38s the sound is unique, but still holds some of the instruments and musical elements. I think the Amen Beat was such an inspirational sample because it led to the creation of new
I hope everyone had a wonderful Memorial Day and took a moment to pause and think of all the people who passed away in service of their country. Summer is officially here and I hope you all have some fun plans with your family or friends. This edition I wanted to talk a little about making proper food choices. Don’t let your backyard BBQ plans or your summer trip get you off track. Remember to stick with those good habits you have developed. If you do find yourself needing some assistance you can always contact us to make an appointment with one of the dieticians, the social worker or plan to come to any of our support group meetings. Happy Summer.
Thank you for the Thanksgiving dinner last night! That was a really great dinner. I enjoyed it a lot. Sorry for interrupting your conversation to go home early last night. I usually go to bed around 11 pm and wake up at 6:30, so 10 pm was a bit late for me. That was fun to learn how Chinese think about their government. I have some friends (and my first roommate) from there. A few of them are just like Pengcheng, knowing almost nothing about how the government works (especially those not coming from the coastline cities). But my friends from larger cities, like Wuhan or Beijing, prefer democracy better. They never use reasons like "China is too big to have democracy" to rebut the idea, and they often times complain about human rights in China
On Monday, I gave my special occasion speech. I would have to say that I was most nervous for this speech and really I don’t know why. The topic I believe was a little harder because you did not have as strict of an outline that you could speak on. We could really pick any topic that had to do with a special occasion. I know for me it took a lot of thinking to decide which one I wanted to do and the one I did choose still felt awkward. Having such broad speech choice also made it hard for many people in the class including me to make the time requirement. I would say that the time was my largest fault for this speech. Some of the other problems that I had during my speech was that I did not go into a great deal of detail on the husband and not going into much fun detail on anything else. I left most the speech pretty broad in the way that I only really told one story. If I were to do the speech again I would come up with much more to say about each person and why they are so perfect for each other.
