Intro The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie is the story of a Native American boy who lives on a reservation but wants to leave in hopes to be different and make his life into something special. He ends up leaving the reservation in search of hope and after a few bumps he finds it. The story is based in the 1990s and around the Spokane Indian reservation in Washington. The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian exemplifies the Native American culture through the use of imagery to comment on the life of an exception to the normal Native American.

Today, people still use many of the same fishing and hunting practices. Many of the same berries and roots are still collected by modern Spokane families. But they do not exclusively use their traditional methods. They do have modern amenities such as modern homes and grocery stores. The Salish language is still taught in schools on the reservation. History is preserved mainly through, its traditional way of, oral stories. Spokane people strongly believe in protecting their history, language and culture. Gaming has been a part of Spokane culture for centuries. There is a game simply called the Stick Game, which is still played at Powwows today. Player’s wage money and play songs as they enjoy the traditional game (Spokane Tribe). In April 2011, there were 2708 Spokane Indians living on the reservation and it is growing. The reservation also takes pride in protecting natural resources. Located on the reservation is 108,874 acres of forest land, 8,552 acres of agricultural land, and 10,328 acres of lakes (Indian Reservation).
