Wrisborne The University of Tampa The Advantages, Disadvantages, and Response to the issue of Problem-Oriented Policing and Crime Prevention in America Herman Goldstein originally announced the policing method, Problem-Oriented Policing or POP in 1979 (Braga, 2010). The topic of Problem-Oriented Policing has been a very controversial debated throughout the years and whether or not the approach had a positive effect on policing and crime prevention. He devolved this form of policing to minimize crime with a different approach. POP tries to zero in on the problems within these communities to not only fix the problem but to also keep it from happening repeatedly. It can be performed in many different ways, one of the most popular is the four-step which can also be referred to as the SARA model. S standing for Scanning, which police identify and prioritize issues that could eventually become worse. This step can also promote a better relationship between the police and the community, because the community can help police see what problems exist. Lastly it can show how often the problem has occurred. The next step would be A, standing for Analysis which is self-explanatory. This step analyzed the problems confirmed by the community. This step in the process shows the reason for which crimes have occurred. Analyzing can also help in figuring out what is the best strategy for a resolution the problem. The third step is R, for Response. In this step police chose the best approach to respond to the issue. This response is based on the information found in the second step, and it determines how much police man power needs to be involved. Lastly is another A, which is the Assessment step which looks back on the overall process. This step will show whether or not the response chosen was the best based on the situation and nature of response. It makes sure the whole process was conducted
