The Affirmative Teamwork: Is The Revolutionary War Justified?

The American Revolutionary War (1775–1783), the American War of Independence, or simply the Revolutionary War in the United States, was the prosperous military revolt against Great Britain of Thirteen American Colonies which joined together as the United States of America in July 1776. Originally constrained to fighting in those colonies, after 1778 it additionally became a world war between Britain and France, Netherlands, Spain, and Mysore.

In 1763, the French and Indian War ended, leaving Great Britain with large debts. In order to help with the debt, Great Britain passed laws to tax the colonists. The colonists were furious. Were the American colonists justified in waging war and breaking away from Britain? Yes, the American colonists were justified in waging war to break away from Britain because the British Parliament was over taxing the colonists, the colonists were forced to stay on the East side of the Appalachian Mountains, and they had to pay to house and care for British soldiers.

For example, the lives of many people that were considered prisoners of war because they were held captive by the British Navy could have been saved if they had avoided a war. It was stated that ¨supporters of the Revolution pointed to prisoner accounts of captivity and suffering as a clear example of the corrupted nature of the British government¨ (Dzurec, 432). However, this war started because the patriots wanted to get their independence from the British. Indeed battles such as Valley of the Forge and the battle of Yorktown were not really necessary, but rather a rebellious fight towards not obeying anybody that caused the loss of many innocent lives. To add up, the riots that the residents of the colonies took part in were not really justified because the British government imposed taxes on all of the British colonies in order to help pay off a debt that would have affected all of them. Nearly 2 centuries ago, our founding fathers decided to declare their independence from Britain, and although their reasonings sounded valid at first, we forget of the bias included in them. There are always two sides of an argument, but sometimes we fail to recognize the other because of the bias we are introduced to. In the fifth grade we were first introduced to the American Revolutionary war, and all the events adding up to it, but little did we know that those topics we were introduced to were actually full of bias. The delegates overly exaggerated and made outlandish remarks concerning the Boston Massacre, the taxes, and the Boston Tea Party in order to justify their independence from Britain.

The American Revolutionary War was a long hard fought war that lasted about 8 years. Many Countries were involved in the war, such as The United States, France, Great Britain, Spain, and The Dutch Republic. Not all countries actually fought but they provided either side with weapons and supplies to help them have a greater chance of winning the war. More than 70,000 people were killed during the great American Revolutionary War. The Americans were tired of the loyalist British taking advantage of them. They were tired of the new taxes that kept being created by the British. The Americans were tired of being pushed around, so they decided to do something about it. High Tensions eventually got between the two countries and they began to start a war, which was known as The American Revolutionary War. Before the war began, a great man implied, “One of the most essential branches of English liberty is the freedoms of one’s house, a man’s house is his castle”, informing everyone that the colonies should be freed from British control (Otis). The American Revolutionary war was a war started, so the 13 colonies of America could gain there independence from Great Britain. Thousands of soldiers were killed while many others were severely wounded. The American Revolutionary war was one of the greatest wars in American history, because it had many great battles, was led by some of the greatest leaders, and got the 13 colonies independence from Great Britain.

The American Revolution was the first of its kind. Colonist rebelling against a supreme power, and successfully overthrowing Great Britain was at the time, something unheard of. In 1776, the colonist wrote the Declaration of Independence to declare independence from England. Over 200 years have passed since the American Revolution, and the question remains. Were the American colonist justified in waging war and breaking away from Britain? The answer to this question is yes, the American colonist were justified by taxes imposed by Britain, the Proclamation of 1763, and their unalienable rights being violated.

The outcomes of the Revolutionary war paved the way towards an expansion of territory sought out to respect civil liberties by outlawing slavery , reforming the education platform and is considered one of the most important legislative acts of the confederation congress. Thomas Jefferson was a key player as he created a vision with an empire based on principles novel at the time. On July 13, 1787 the Northwest Ordinance came into place, a new legislation which expanded the original 13 states westward not only acquiring land, but provided a framework for educational organization and political incorporation in the new territories.

Many of us know about the Revolutionary War, and how our great country was mistreated by colonists, who were complete traitors. Prior to the revolution, the country suffered from a massive debt problem after the French and Indian War. As a nation, we tried our uttermost to help solve this debt problem for the colonists however, they refused to listen. The war cost our sovereign nation £70,000,000, rising our national debt to the all time high of £140,000,000. This war fought with the French and the Indians spawned one of the largest crisis that the country of Britain has ever experience.

I think that the American Colonies were justified in going to war with Great Britain and seeking their Independence. One reason why they needed to go to war was because of the colonies' lack of representation. The colonists had some say in their American government, in which they could vote down bills, make an amendment, or agree. However, when Parliament began taxation on the Americans, the colonists could not vote it down. During the revolution, the Patriots were a strong army that worked together, even during hard times. Towards the beginning stages of the revolution, the colonies recognized that they needed their independence from Britain in order to be successful as a country. They started to come together and form their own militia. They began to round up supplies and artillery, and were even training to fight. Delegates from each colony came together as the Second Continental Congress, which was America’s government during the war. I believe that it was Common Sense by Thomas Paine that was the tipping moment for the Revolutionary War. Common Sense was more powerful and influential than Samuel Adams’ work was; people today would not still be reading Common Sense still if it did not have a major role for the American Revolution. Common Sense became a revolutionary anthem for the American colonists in the late 1700’s. Paine’s pamphlet challenged the largest power in the world at the time when no one else would. When Common Sense was published it became one of the forerunners calling for independence and war with England. Before Common Sense people still had their reservations about taking up arms against Great Britain, but after Common Sense, those reservations were eliminated.

On the other hand, the hostility was furthered when the interaction between the English and the Americans became atrocious. The colonists then decided to organize themselves into equal groups to fight, but only the men who wanted to do so by volunteering. Yet, the English broke up into an order that was constantly maintained, which included divisions. In 1759, a Massachusetts soldier admitted that the English troops “are but little better that slave to their officers.” This effect resulted with the increase of the colonists’ resistance to the political interference of Britain, but also their resentment towards them as well.

When a bully begins to abuse his powers upon victims, then the victims have every right to retaliate; similarly in the American Revolution, the British is the bully, and the Americans are the victims. The cause for America’s Revolution started with political and environmental independency due to geography, continued with economic tensions with the British and finished with the effects of the Enlightenment.
