The Affordable Care Act, A Topic Of Great Controversy Among Americans

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) has been a topic of dispute since its introduction and continues to be discussed by politicians in the U.S. and throughout the world even after its passage. The Act has many opponents and is the cause of much controversy nationwide, primarily because it introduces higher healthcare costs for the richest citizens. Nevertheless, the ACA is an important stage in the American healthcare development process as it not only allows more people to receive healthcare services, but will also reduce the deficit. However, not everyone agrees. The policy is controversial in terms of cost vs. benefits, but the benefits ultimately outweigh the costs.

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) is considered to be one of the most radical health care moves in legislation after Medicare. The reason being that it will provide universal health coverage to everyone regardless of circumstance. An evaluation of ACA’s influence on health care will be evaluated in this paper.

The Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, is an act passed by president Barack Obama on March 23, 2010. This act, which provides affordable health insurance to Americans, was passed for three primary reasons. These reasons are to reduce the number of individuals in the United States who currently are not covered by some form of health insurance, to improve the availability and quality of existing health care programs, and to reduce the cost of health care to individuals and the government (“Patient Protection”, 2014). The Affordable Care Act has been successful in some ways, but ineffective in other ways since it was passed in March of 2010. For example, Obamacare has helped expand Medicaid and has helped those who have Medicare. However, this act has had a negative impact on the uninsured and on insurance premiums. In addition, some small businesses have benefited from this act, while others have had a negative effect. The Affordable Care Act has many pros, but it also has some cons, which is why there are still some changes and ideas that I would like to see implemented in our healthcare system.

The Affordable Care Act was passed by Congress and signed into law by President Barack Obama on March 23, 2010. The Law was designed to extend coverage to millions of uninsured Americans and protect patients from abuse or discrimination. The Affordable Care Act affects, all Americans, either in a positive or negative way. It is an issue that has come to separated our congress, it has divided the republican and democratic parties, to the point where the Government was shut down.

Ever since Barack Obama signed the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) into law in 2010, it has been met by criticism from many people from many different ideologies. Although the law held promise for allowing all individuals to afford healthcare and all of its benefits, that is not to say it does not have its downsides. Since passing, both the conservative and democratic parties have found reasons to dislike the law. This essay will include a description of the law itself, criticisms from the two parties, and a personal reading into the Affordable Care Act and the potential it has at actually making a positive impact on the American health care industry.

This act contains a new “Patient’s Bill of Rights” granting Americans both stability and flexibility needed in order for them to make educated decisions regarding their own health care [4]. Thus, the ACA makes health care a possibility for everyone no matter what their race, religion, income or sex. It allows approximately 32 million uninsured Americans to be able to get some type of insurance coverage through a public program such as Medicaid or Medicare, through their employer or by purchasing coverage from their State's Health Insurance Marketplace [5]. It also allows young Americans to stay on their parent’s health insurance plan until the age of 26 [5]. It improves the care for seniors through expanding free preventive services programs [6] and affords crucial changes to women’s health by mandating coverage of preventive health care measures at no cost to the patient (e.g., breastfeeding supplies, pre- and post-natal care, mammograms, etc.) [7]. In addition, the ACA puts an end to abuses of insurance companies by putting into place new standards for commercial insurers, like the lifting of lifetime coverage limits and striking down pre-existing condition exclusion clauses

The Affordable Care Act enabled more people to obtain health insurance, thus receiving healthcare. This offers a larger variety of people to obtain healthcare, in particular, those who cannot afford it. However, this also increased the stress on a fragile healthcare system with limited professionals and has arguably made a push for a refined method of how to provide and extend care to millions of Americans. In 2010, if someone did not want healthcare, they did not have to get it, but in 2014, there was a fine established if one refused to buy health insurance. The ACA was developed in order to give consumers control of their health care and to provide them with a means of power. The main function of the Affordable Care Act is to improve hospitals’ and physicians’ practices financially, technologically, and clinically so the health outcomes and lower costs. Americans are split, as they are with most political issues, on whether or not the act is a viable solution to our healthcare problem. Even though it has had its problems such as a faulty website and being thought of as too complicated and expensive for the American government to take on, I believe the Affordable Care Act is a good solution for the healthcare problems in our country.

Obama’s new health care plan is forcing all Americans to get health insurance and those who don’t get health insurance will be penalized when filing taxes. The health care reform has now taken full effect on the people of the United States, so we have citizens who are excited about the reform, and we also have citizens who are upset about the reform.
