Introduction The Affordable Care Act (ACA), officially called the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) or what many are calling “Obama Care” is a US law that reforms both healthcare and health insurance industries in America by increasing the quality, availability, and affordability of private and public health insurance to uninsured Americans. It does this through many provisions including; new regulations, taxes, mandates, and subsidies. In addition, expanded Medicaid to millions in states that chose to expand the program (including Minnesota) and is working to curb healthcare spending in the US. The topic I chose to focus on was the affects it has on the revenue cycle of Hospitals. According to the Departments of Health and Human Services (HHS), Medicaid expansion and increased coverage has reduced unpaid medical bills, meaning less medical debt for consumers and less unpaid hospital bills that hurt hospitals and state tax payers. Hospitals uncompensated care costs are estimated to be $7.4 billion (21%) lower in 2014 than they would have been in the absence of coverage expansions. With this reform hospitals can expect more revenue, more complex payment methodologies and more complicated payment responsibilities. Summary With one of the goals of the Affordable Care Act being they want to give more Americans access to affordable, quality health insurance I do find it strange that they are wanting to fine people for not having insurance.
