The African American Experience

In this paper I discuss the African-American culture in regards to values, norms and beliefs.

In the history of the United States, African Americans have always been discriminated against. When Africans first came to America, they were taken against their will and forced to work as laborers. They became slaves to the rich, greedy, lazy Americans. They were given no pay and often badly whipped and beaten. African Americans fought for their freedom, and up until the Civil War it was never given to them. When the Civil War began, they wanted to take part in fighting to free all slaves. Their opportunity to be soldiers and fight along side white men equally did not come easily, but eventually African Americans proved themselves able to withstand the heat of battle and fight as true American heroes.

The African Americans, experienced for many centuries was very poorly in fact that they treated unfairly. In the communities today African Americans are targeted by their color of their skin. The police brutality towards black people is tremendously horrifying. The population of prisons in the U.S

I would like to take you on a journey, a chronological journey through time of the African Americans in this country. This journey procede year by year, sometimes month by month, and day by day as we follow the life of the African American. This journey is about where we came from in Africa, and why we were brought to this country. Also, how the African came to the New World, and the contributions made by the African Americans to help build this nation. We will look at the laws that affected the African Americans, in and out of slavery. The journey will illustrate some of the positive, and some negative events in history, as well as, some of the movers and the shakers in the African American’s quest for equality. African American Studies is a very complex subject. To confuse African American studies with black history is a common occurrence. African American studies is much deeper and more profound than just Black history alone. There are many unanswered and unasked questions among the Black American culture which causes confusion and misunderstanding in modern day society. In unit one there were many themes, concepts, and significant issues in the discipline of Africana studies. Both W.E.B Du Bois and Vivian V. Gordan touched on many concerns.

Throughout U.S history african american have faced different types of unjust and unfair rom the Civil War to the Civil Rights Movement where black people have either been slaves who tirelessly worked for no pay. Or they were treated as something that was below or better white people

The African American culture has experience a lot of things, we have experience being discriminate because the color of our skin. African American has heirted power from our ancestor to fight for what we believe in.During slavery time we could experience privilege because we was control by the master and we did have a choice to decide things, we did not have the privilege to have education.The paragrarph below will go into more detail how African American was discriminate, how they have power and what privilege they had.

Many Americans point to the suffering of the African American experience from the internal problems in African Americans communities; however, they neglect the external social constraints that African Americans have faces in America. African Americans have suffered oppression through social institution through factors such as Segregation, Racial Crimination, and Mass incarnation. The constraint of segregation was a way of social, political, and economical control over African Americans. African Americans are usually a racial group that is associate with crime. Research and statistics has shown that African Americans are those that are majority incarnated in the United states. Many white Americans kept

African-American people have been treated unequally compared to people of European descent. For example, african-americans could not use certain public things like water fountains; when it comes to restaurants, black people had to go to the back to eat. Another thing, black people had to attend different schools than white people furthermore, the schooling was not as good as the others. The way african-americans were treated was not justified in any way at all. To explain, the african-americans probably felt horrible about the mistreatments they experienced. When they had to go to the backs of restaurants it was very inconvenient and they were basically being shamed and ridiculed all day no matter where they went. Some of them weren’t even

African Americans have endured many trials and tribulations over the centuries. Our people have suffered from war, violence, and anguish simply because of the color of our skin. Our history has been so blatantly missing from textbooks and the K-12th grade educational atmosphere. Our educational system continues to neglect the history of our African American ancestors and fail to provide them with the educational resources to inform them of our past and allow them to learn about the true origins of our culture. We have made many significant contributions to the world but those have also been highly ignored as well.

Over the last one hundred and thirty years African Americans have little by little-gained freedom for themselves as slaves and domestic servants. Now as a culture they are legally capable of obtaining jobs and positions in all areas of private and public organizations, (Hayes, A. F., & Preacher, K. J., 2010). This particular ethnic group are known to be instrumental in holding their cultures together through times of constant struggle. They have used rallies, protests, silent marches and received help from volunteer organizations to fight for rights as well as obtain justice in a racist and sexist society. This work explores the troubles African Americans face in Americas society today, through stereotypes and how gender roles as African Americans differ from each other as well as the American population.

The United States’ treatment of African Americans has changed tremendously since the country’s founding up until now. African Americans were first introduced to the country in one of the harshest manners possible. They were brought over on tightly compacted slave ships and then forced into hard labor for the entirety of their lives. This went on for centuries until African Americans were finally given their freedom after the Civil War. Albeit this was much better than slavery, citizenship came with many troubles of its own. The years following the Civil War, known as the Gilded Age and the Progressive Era, would prove to be, aside from slavery, some of the hardest times for African Americans in all of U.S. history.

The United States is a immigrant country, which faces varieties of problems. The African American problem is one of the most serious one. Racial segregation is a deep-rooted social problem, which reflects in every field in the United States. For example, education, labor market and criminal justice system. In the aspect of education, most of black children were not permitted to enter the school, because the white children studied there. In the aspect of labor market, the black people 's average wages were lower than the whites. They did the manual work. In the aspect of criminal justice system, the blacks were easily in jail. Badly, their sentences were also more serious than the whites. In general, the blacks live in the bottom of the American society. Martin Luther King delivered the famous speech I Have a Dream, ' ' I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. ' ' (1) However, it was difficult for African American to get the freedom. The 1776 Declaration of Independence announced that everyone are equal and freedom.But black slavery still occurred in the southern states of America. Then the Civil War broke out, African American kept struggling for land and political rights.

Most history books today do not contain the complete and true history of African Americans. If they must include African American history, most of the significant events and people are briefly explained or not included. African Americans have reached a time where they attain the power to act and make decisions at their own accord. African Americans possessed strength to survive generations of suffering from slavery, going against the odds of the social structure by constructing their own institutions despite limited rights they endured, and contributing to the making of America that helped open doors to their freedom. However, African Americans are still fighting for equality today because racism is engraved in the foundation of the country. Although, African Americans have acquired many freedoms such as being able to vote, being able to eat in the same restaurant as a Caucasian person, as well as attain the same careers and same salaries as a Caucasian person. From the previous examples, one can claim that African Americans have come a long way but, still have a long way to go. The centuries of undergoing brutality to set African Americans back has resulted in many African Americans to suffer from mental illness. To summarize, history books lead on the misconception that the history of African Americans started from slavery. However, that is not the case, due to the fact that African Americans held great status
