Scientists and biologist have argued the Nature versus Nurture debate for decades. This debate argues the degree to which our genetics or environment, affects our behaviour and developmental stages. Nature is described as the genetic material that makes up an individual. Nurture can be described as the way in which the environment and experiences of an individual influence their behavior and development. The debate has centered on which is a greater factor for many years but current contemporary views accept and acknowledge the intricacy of the developmental procedure and recognize that “development is not the case of nature or nurture, but rather nature and nurture” (Howard & Walton 2015) It has been shown that genetic and environmental factors are in such continuous interactions that the emergence of particular structures and functions is the result of the dependent interaction of genetics and environment.(Lewkowicz, 2011.)
Society has isolated genetics and the environment into two separate components. When in reality nature and nurture coincide. Both genetic and environmental components influence an individual and contribute to their molding. In my perspective nature verses nurture should not be considered a valid debate. There are too many variables that contribute to an individual’s identity to suggest that genetics or environmental surroundings are the primary force that shapes an individual.
Nature and nurture are two terms used in behavioral psychology to describe or debate what influences our personal growth and development. Nature is the genetic influences on how closely related people can have similar characteristics. The concept of nature is that certain genetic and hereditary characteristics are passed down from generation to generation. For example, a grandmother, a daughter and a granddaughter can all have the same skin color, hair color, eye color and also be similar in height. Also genetics are believed to play a role in intelligence, as well as some birth defects, and sexual orientation. Nurture on the other hand, is the role of environmental influences on an individual’s growth and development. Environmental influences include the home environment, parenting style and the effects of educational programs. There had been much research and debate on the roles of nature and nurture in one’s personal development.
Despite this, nature and nurture could play different crucial roles in our lives. Genetic factors are responsible for our appearances; environmental factors are responsible for our social values and attitudes (Tan, 2015). Our physical traits are clearly inherited from our parents and are unchangeable. But our behaviour is mainly up to us to decide. If we observe around us, majority of the children behaves differently from the parents; parents could be compliant but a child could be stubborn and vice versa. Therefore, nature and nurture works differently in our
The Nature vs. Nurture debate is one of the oldest arguments in the history of psychology. Since the start of the debate psychologists argued that you were either a product of nature or nurture, not both. Nature enthusiasts suggested that you are a product of your genes, while nurture enthusiasts suggested that you are a product of your environment. What if I told you, you actually could be a product of both? Newer research and experiments suggest that many human traits and behaviors actually result from both genetic and environmental factors. Your genes help to provide the potential for a trait, but in order for the potential of said trait to be realized, your environment has to influence
Behavior and personality traits are formed mostly by genetics (Wexler 3). As technology improves we start to have a better understanding of traits, environment and mostly genetics have a great impact on such. Genetic influences also bring out genetic-environmental correlations (Wexler 2). Growing up in a house full of others you tend to adapt to your surroundings to a certain point, however eventually that point can only take you so far until genetics have to then take over. Genetics influence development and expression of certain behaviors (Wexler 3). Some environmental triggers will have an adverse physiological effect because of predisposed genetics (Wexler 3). In the past traits and diseases were thought to come
Many people today wonder about whom they are and how they became that way. Is who we are in our genetic code? Is it a result of our surroundings? Behavioral geneticists attempt to answer these questions by studying the differences in humanity and weighing the effects and interplay of heredity and environment--nature versus nurture. Nature, or environment, is the effect of the surroundings. Nurture, or heredity, is the effect of the genes. Behavioral geneticists have found however that both play a key role in our lives, as twin studies have shown.
When we look at the science of human development, the main consideration is how people change over time. In the age old question of nature versus nurture, there are some that believe the characteristics and traits within us are innate, meaning we are born with them. Still others feel that nurturing, our environmental influences like friends, community, schools, media and even parents affect who we are. This is a false dichotomy, it is not which-but how much of each because both play crucial roles in our development (Berger 2015).
The biggest controversy in psychology today is whether genetics or one’s environment plays a role in the behavior of the individual. Psychologists have researched and developed different theories to explain the reason for the way humans think and behave. The behavior of individuals is either inherited or learned. In my opinion, I believe that nurture plays a big role in the individual’s behavior. Kendra Cherry states, “Nurture refers to all the environmental variables that impact who we are, including our early childhood experiences, how we were raised, our social relationships, and our surrounding culture” (1). People have become who there are because of the environment they were exposed to in their childhood years. The behavior of people is influenced be the environment that surrounds them and can changed many times through one’s lifetime. People have different personalities a person’s
Epigenetic research shows that environmental factors can affect the genetic makeup of an individual.” Epigenetic change can occur throughout life in response to environmental factors such as nutrition, sleep habits, stress, and physical affection” (Martorell, Papalia & Feldman, 2013, p.71). I can totally agree with this because I believe we are constantly influenced by our environment. This research supports the information presented in chapter 2 because Erik H Erikson explained some valid points. “Each stage involves what Erikson originally called a “crisis” in personality a major psychosocial challenge that is particularly important at the time but will remain an issue to some degree throughout the rest of life. These issues, which emerge
There has always been a long and hot debate over the issue Nature vs. Nurture. It examines the controversy about whether it is nature (inherited genes and components) or nurture (environmental factors) that influences, changes and even dominates our personalities, behaviors, intelligence and abilities. Through an intensive examination, I endorse the belief that both nature and nurture influence our development and they cooperate through synthetic effect to shape our traits.
During the 20th century, there was a popular debate between nature and nurture among scholars. On the one side, some psychologists, such as, Arthur Jensen believed that genetics plays a significant role in shaping a person’s traits and behaviors. While on the other side, psychologists such as B.F. Skinner and John B. Watson argues that behaviors are primarily learned from an individual’s surrounding and derived by the environmental influence. But today, the majority of the scholars propose that nature and nurture are interrelated and they affect people’s development of traits and behaviors simultaneously. Therefore, in our research, instead of making an argument on which factor generate more influence on human development, we focused on the
Life experiences, I assume could alter some, but not all the person’s development predisposed/ inherited
Increasingly, people are beginning to realize that asking how much heredity or environment influence a particular trait is not the right approach. The reality is that there is not a simple way to disentangle the multitude of forces that exist. These influences include genetic factors that interact with one another, environmental factors that interact such as social experiences and overall culture, as well as how both hereditary and environmental influences intermingle. Instead, many researchers today are interested in seeing how genes modulate environmental influences and vice versa
Every single person on Earth has their own distinct personality backed up by their behavior. But, how much is our personality is affected by the environment surrounding us? This debate has existed since 1869, when the phrase "Nature Versus Nurture" was created the English polymath, Francis Galton. On one side, there are those who argued that our personalities and traits are determined by our genetic model and DNA. On the opposite spectrum are the people agreeing with the nurture side of the debate, which argues that people are born with a mind as a “blank state”, where through learning and interactions with the surrounding environment, we gain an understanding of life.
