The airline industry is a competitive method of travel and continues to grow at a rapid rate globally. In fact, the industry has doubled over the course of a decade from $369 billion in 2004 to $746 billion by 2014 per the International Air Transport Association. However, is the airline industry “hampered by slim profit margins, forcing carriers to focus on both cost reduction and revenue growth through better customer interactions?” (Industry Perspectives, 2015) With revenue growth comes concerns for airline firms like that of Southwest Airlines. Examples of these concerns are the variety of costs. Since fuel is the biggest part of an airline’s cost base, it is safe to say that a firm such as Southwest Airlines is rather a “variable-cost company as expenses tend to increase and decrease in tandem with rates of production.” (Maxon, 2008) Understanding fixed and variable costs in the airline industry is helpful for informing output decisions daily. For example, how much they can produce in a certain time period such as, one day a week, one week, one month, etc. As technology has advanced through time with these noted costs, the airline firm made some changes to their services. You can now use your mobile device as a digital pilot to check on travel reservations, rent a car, early bird check-in, etc. What is the secret behind Southwest Airlines continued revenue growth and success? The use of one type of aircraft known as the Boeing 737.
