The American Dream and Education America is traditionally thought to be a land of great opportunities: it gives people of different kinds chances to study, work, and prosper. It is said to be a place where nobody can become somebody. Americans are sure that if you make efforts you will undoubtedly achieve success and realize your American Dream which is thought to be an integral part of America. But who can make it clear what that cherished American Dream really is? What are the efforts to be made in order to reach the goal? Is good education a necessary step on your way to success and to realizing your American Dream? Many people may say it is not and give numerous examples of the kind; but the practice of nowadays shows that without proper education you may after all remain nobody. People often focus on wealth, glamour, and fun. The brilliance of all these lures them and they forget about other values. The story of Nick Carraway from Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby (2013) is partially about that. The young man had dreamed of being a writer, had the education necessary to realize that dream, but got attracted by the charms of New York life which seemed to embody the American Dream itself. The life of New York in 1922 is vividly described at the very beginning of the movie. The narrator says: “…The parties were bigger, the shows were broader, the buildings were higher, the morals were looser, and the ban on alcohol had backfired making the liquor cheaper” (The Great Gatsby). That was the time when people could make quick money at the stock exchange and then enjoy this money to the full at the parties. How could young men like Nick Carraway resist this merry and frivolous life? Of course, his long-cherished dream of being a writer was forgotten and he turned to dealing with stocks and bonds.
