“Our workforce and our entire economy are strongest when we embrace diversity to its fullest, and that means opening doors of opportunity to everyone and recognizing that the American Dream excludes no one” (Perez 2). “Only in America can someone start with nothing and achieve the American Dream. That's the greatness of this country” (Cruz 3). In the United States, we as a society have the experience and understatement of freedom. We have freedom of rights, freedom of religion, and freedom to work and given to earn money in the United States. This is the kind American Dream in this society. There is another different kind of American Dream. Citizen who have been born and raised in the Untied States is given this dream and they have the opportunity …show more content…
The country is the first and most the biggest obstacle on the journey of accomplishing for anyone and that’s an American Dream. Some may not appreciate how difficult it actually is to make a name as an immigrant to the United States. While many Americans know how difficult it is to find a good job in the American economy today and most do not realize and understand how hard it is to get in to this country on your own. If and when some immigrants get into our country, they are automatically forced to start at the bottom of the “totem pole” as Howard W. Foster said, “in the employment world, with many other out of work employees or employees who are new to the American workforce. Many immigrants that do not have an education or connections here in America, start off working minimum wage jobs, if they are fortunate, even some people who have been in America for their entire lives are forced to settle for minimum wage jobs.” According to Ted Widmer from “ What the Man behind the American Dream really meant” he explains there are not many employment opportunities out for immigrates and they are being turned down because of their race and where they came from but it is not the last step in trying to achieve their dreams. In many cases the money is not enough to live off of and some people are forced to get a second or third job that only pays minimum wage causing not enough time for education and without any education they can not move up in their life and they will stay at the same level for there rest of their life’s, it will continue it is an ending cycle in this generations and will be continued in the future. The American dream is about being satisfying with your life and completing your life but it is also about earning enough to have a respectable life, having the ability to move up within the work surroundings as well as
Immigrants dreamed of coming to the United States for years. The United States is emerging and becoming more industrialized. Immigrants wanted a this thriving country for their own. They also wanted the government to protect each person’s opportunity to pursue their own idea of happiness. So these families immigrated and came to America to live the American Dream. The American Dream us achieved through sacrifice, risk-taking, and hard work, not by chance. Both sacrifice and risk-taking may have been hard for some families to accomplish in order to come to America, but it was necessary. These families that really had a passion to live in America, and to be happy needed to put in hard work, to get back a good result. The American Dream is something that needs to be worked for, not taken for granted and was not achieved by chance, it was achieved through sacrifice, risk-taking, and hard work.
About 13% of the United States population are immigrants. Most immigrants come to the United States due to the many opportunities that this country offers. The American dream is often referring to the ideal life that an immigrant might obtain in the United States. The American dream is different for everyone, some want to study, others will like to be homeowners, or become rich; whichever goal an immigrant sets for themselves once they arrive in the U.S becomes their American dream. There are several factors that stop immigrants from achieving their goals, for example the language barrier, a complete change in lifestyle, and even racism. However, the biggest struggle for an immigrant is not to adapt to their new ambiance; the most difficult
Eleanor Roosevelt said, “the future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” That statement holds strong for immigrants in America. Equal access to opportunities allows immigrants to achieve the American dream. Their success correlates with America’s success because of the contributions immigrants provide to America. Unfortunately, the current immigration policy in America denies many immigrants the American dream. It is crucial to understand the historical context of immigration in America. Initially, most immigrants were from Europe and were not restricted by any immigration laws. Now, most immigrants come from Latin America but are restricted to severe immigration laws. The Latino/a community is one of the most
All around the world the United States of America is viewed as a place of freedom and equal opportunity for all people who settle in the country. Immigrants, especially from second or third world countries, view America as a chance for them to start over and a live the lavish lifestyles they are accustomed to hearing. However, this belief that everyone in the United States lives how they want to and has equal opportunity is false. Immigrants from countries all over the world face many different issues as they settle in the United States. Although these problems may vary, the message is the same; the American dream is a lot more difficult to achieve than previously thought. Although every immigrant is different in the problems
The definition of the “American Dream” by James Truslow Adams, “life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement” this means that no matter your social class, dilemmas, or circumstances at birth one will overcome and make their dream come true. This is a misconception brought upon by us in order to bring more workers to justify a social class clearly. Many immigrants come to the US thinking there will be a better life for them. It is the place where dreams come through. They know it will not be easy and are willing to put the hard work and
When most people think of the American Dream they often visualize the typical white fence, the two children, and an overall perfect family. When people think of the American Dream they think of the dream jobs which consist of being a doctor, lawyer, or a widely known talk show host. The people who have the voice determine what is ideal in society and what isn’t. They try to sell you this pitch that the American Dream is obtainable and what you put in to the system, you get out; This is also know as meritocracy. The thought of achieving the American Dream through success and social mobility is the misinformed interpretation what the upper middle class likes to say, however its easier to say that when climbing the class ladder is a lot more difficult when born into a low advantaged family. It is absolutely impossible to reach the American Dream unless you are among the wealthy. Circumstances that work against an individual only further hinders any opportunity that person may have to “obtain” the American Dream. Negative factors not working in your favor will most likely determine your undesirable future and having a role model, such as Oprah, who seemingly embodies the American Dream, will lead to the unrealistic dream that her status is actually attainable. Some of the key elements we consider essential to achieving success, are now impractical and misleading, proving the many flaws in our American Dream that make it impossible to obtain.
future for them and their families. But the issue today is that coming to America might not even be better than staying in a place overflowing with poverty and gangs. These immigrants aren't coming for the American Dream, because it doesn't exist anymore. The sacrifices of coming to America aren't worth the outcome because immigrant families are split up and deported, children face emotional and physical struggles, and once they arrive immigrants aren't treated fairly.
The American dream, for many, can mean more opportunities for a better life, a fresh start, or a chance for unrestricted freedoms that other countries do not provide for their people. It is supposed to allow people a shot for equal work, fair pay, and equal rights under the Constitution, as long as they become a United States citizen. It is given the reputation for allowing all American citizens to be able to pursue a fair and equal chance for success, in the United States, whatever that success may look like to that particular person. That was the intention of course, but in reality the American dream is not always the idea that many claim it to be. Despite most American's best intentions to try and treat immigrants equally, there are some residents of the United States who cannot get over their sense of entitlement or privilege to
Some people settle and others seek more for their life no matter how hard it is to get it. Dreams that turn into reality and the ones that never stop believing. This is the case of many immigrants that migrate to America, a land known for its safety and freedom. They don’t want to settle and wish to live a better life. To give more to their children and to fight for more success. Eager for a better life they know that they will encounter many rough times, financially, legally, and even deal with hurtful discrimination. Immigrants in America come from all over the world, yet the focus is mainly on its
The American Dream is something that should be for anyone who wants to achieve success, and prosperity through the hard work and determination. According to Webster Dictionary, immigration is the act of moving to another country which is not their native to live there permanently. Many people from all over the world are suffering from hunger, having a polluted country and suffering poverty before you want to be selfish think about all those people who wish to have one fourth of what we all have in America and to be part of the El Dorado where people do not suffer a lot as other countries. Several people from all over the world specially form third world countries that are in war try so hard to complete the Odyssey to the United States for a better life where their dreams can come true. Immigrants who make it to the United States face many discriminations which makes their life harder and difficult. Now those immigrants, how many call them are teachers, doctors, dentists, engineers, and many more occupations and their contributions have a great impact in United Sates. Not only does Mexicans try to come to America to complete their dream come for example also Canadians, Syrians, Cubans and Indians as many other more. Every year more and more immigrants are coming in to United States. The immigrants who crosses the boarder with the hope for a better life have come to be successful at achieving their American Dream and the United States is rapidly increasing their population due
For many people, the United States is a country of hope and opportunity. It is a nation that is been made of immigrants since the beginning of its history. Numerous people seek to come to this great country, where the American dream presents a lot of challenges for them day by day. These people face countless adversities perusing their American dream going through discrimination, racism, judgment etc. Despite the greatness of this country, there are dark spots where the American dream can turn difficult, but this doesn’t stop people from wanting a better future.
In these times of increasing tension and deliberate deception, this slogan has captured the imagination. It has also sparked racial backlash.
“And when I speak, I don't speak as a Democrat. Or a Republican. Nor an American. I speak as a victim of America's so-called democracy. When we open our eyes today and look around America, we see America through the eyes of someone who has been the victim of Americanism. We don't see any American dream. We've experienced only the American nightmare.” –Malcolm X. The American Dream is the idea that every person should have an equal opportunity to obtain success through hard work, prosperity, and determination. Recently though, this American Dream isn’t functioning as expected. While some believe that America still provides access to the American Dream today by allowing the opportunity for people in America and those who immigrate to achieve
I chose motherhood because her identity as a mother is important to her. The story of her 5 children has impacted her life greatly. She has had 7 pregnancies and 5 children. The other 2 were not abortions but they were miscarriages which can also have a deep emotional impact on a woman. Although she has 5 children, her only experience with labor is giving birth at the hospital. Even though she gave birth in the hospital all her children were born naturally with no epidural and I find that amazing.
Still, people are willing to risk their lives’ to enter the United States. Some may succeed, while some will be unsuccessful and get deported back to their own country. They sacrifice everything in order to provide a sense of hope for their family. This is what the American Dream represents; being able to prosper, raise a family, and live the means of a good life. Illegal immigrants long for a day where their offspring will develop into a successful individual, rather than growing up in an environment of poverty and despair. Imagine your child working in the fields of Mexico only earning 50 to 60 pesos a day ($5-$6). He/she is planting crops under the blazing sun getting blisters on their feet. The heat consumes the dream and hopes they aspire. People experience many difficulties while seeing more than they desire. Although immigrants approach the U.S. longing for wealth, in reality wages are less than the average salary of Americans. Even so, immigrants gain strength to continue through the encouragement of their family.
