The American dream. This statement holds many meanings to different people, some believe the American dream is owning a home with a white picket fence while others believe that the American dream is standing for the ideals that America was founded on like democracy, liberty, opportunity and independence. People across America have their own opinions on the American dream but not every American has the same opportunities to achieve their version of the American dream. The novel Dream Hoarders written by Richard V. Reeves approaches the thought of how the people living the American dream in the upper class are affecting the rest of the United States. The book is broken up into two main categories the first one being the problems of the upper middle class and the second one being focused on solutions that Reeves believes will bridge the gap between the upper middle class and the lower financial classes.
In the first portion of the book Reeves focuses on the problems he believes are the main issues with the upper middle class. One of the issues Reeves talks about intensively is the issue of unfair education in the United States. Reeves argues that the people of the upper middle class create a separation between themselves and the other classes from the start of their child’s education in kindergarten all the way through high school and onto their higher education choice.
