The American Dream Silas Hanegraaf The American Dream has been a long time goal that everybody in America has wanted in his or her life. Though the American Dream does not have to be what another person has defined it as, but rather it is what one person wants, their personal goal or desire of what they want it to be. Having an American Dream for ones’ self is helpful, because it has people set a goal, so they can keep moving forward to achieve that dream “The American Dream affords us opportunity and the freedom to seize it” (Rather, 2001). For this to take place, for instance, a man who grew up without a home, and took the time to try to succeed his lifetime goal of the American Dream. People need to base their goals on their own opinions, not another guy’s opinion; other people should not rule your life. People can state whatever they think the American Dream is for America, of how the “lifetime” achievement of America is to be rich. Only the rich have only gotten richer, and the ones who want to be rich, have only became less poor “The idea of the American Dream – to rise from humble origins to become part of the wealthy elite – has become outdated as the rich have become richer and the poor more mired in poverty.” (Gardner, 2012). Everyone should have their own opinion on the American Dream, even the other people who say that the American Dream is the same for everyone, which is technically their own opinion. Now they can choose what they are stating of their opinion for the American Dream, but this does not mean it is true or helpful in today’s society. If the Americans to “Get Rich”, which happens to not be a person’s personal lifetime goal, state the American Dream how will they be happy by this if it is not their own goal? They won’t, because it needs to be that person’s own goal to satisfy them, not another man’s opinion. Most people won’t complete this goal as stated above in the quote that the rich are becoming richer, and the poor are becoming less poor. America has come a long way on what they have wanted the American Dream to be set as in their life, but overall it should not depend on what the society has made the American Dream, it
