The American Dream Violence Analysis

The American Dream is being able to live a life in which you are very happy with and able to do what one desires. George has foreseen their American dream for a while. The American Dream takes a lot of work effort and perseverance, being able to work through a tough time and overcoming the matter is what the American Dream is all about. After making the many sacrifices and overcoming the obstacles that were ahead and ones sees the finish line great success is achieved. George desires of buying his own piece of land and a house and being able to provide for himself shows a great sense for the American Dream.

The American Dream is surely based on the concept of “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness” but it is above all, a matter of ambition. James Truslow Adams, an American writer and historian, in 1931 states: "life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement”, which not only points towards a better standard of living for Americans but also denounces a degree of greed in the US society. Ambition not only “killed the cat” but killed relationships as well in texts like Sister Carrie and Death of a Salesman. While the American Dream was supposed to be a collective success at its initial stage, ambition, along with a pinch of greed and materialism were perfect ingredients

American politician Marco Rubio once said,“The American dream is a term that is often misunderstood. It isn’t really about becoming rich or famous. It is about things much simpler and more fundamental than that” (brainyquote.com). This concept is true in the novels The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, and The Great Gatsby by F.Scott Fitzgerald. In both novels, the protagonists (Holden and Gatsby) are pushed by society to live up to the stereotypical ‘American dream’. Both Holden and Gatsby have high and unrealistic expectations of themselves. They both share fond memories and their different ideas of the American dream; but in the end, they realize their ideas of them are just fantasies. After realising the truth behind the American dream, it leads them to their tragic end. The American dream is not beneficial because it pushes people in society to be something they are not. Both stories are tragic because the pursuit of the dream, and Holden’s individuality.

The American Dream can mean multiple different things depending on who you ask. Some individuals will answer it as having freedom of religion, class or race others will say it is about the ability to choose where they want to work, what they want to wear, or what they are going to do tomorrow. The American dream is the idea that was presented through American literature. The Dreamer aspires to rise from rags to riches, while engrossing in such things as wealth, love on his way to the top and to West Egg. In 1920’s early settler’s rooted to the United States Declaration of Independence who demonstrates that “All men are equal”. The dream of a land that life can be better place that is richer and fuller for every man that gives themself the opportunity for others through his ability or achievements. The American Dream was not started for the fact of motor cars and high wages but dream of social order for every man to attain the fullest stature. In The Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby is a self-made man who started out with no money to a proposal to achieve his dream. He is so eyeless by his cars and love for Daisy that he does not see that money cannot buy love or happiness. Fitzgerald demonstrates how a dream can become depraved by one’s focus on wealth, love and hatred.

Martin Luther Luther King Jr, once had said “And so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream”. This quote would be like his version of the American dream. The American dream Martin Luther King Jr. had said don't surrender to your dreams no matter how hard your difficulties may be or the obstacles in your way, to always fight for what you believe in and go for what you want, just like in John Steinbeck's novella “of Mice and Men”. Steinbeck explores the American dream throughout hardships through the novella as in the Great Depression and being migrant farmers. Many characters in at least some form had their own version of the American dream in their head as they viewed it to to as in to be in pictures or to tend to rabbits, but most people struggled to achieve it.

Over the past week or so, we have witnessed wrongful actions by Americans on other American citizens throughout the country. There has been flag burning and even violence on the Ohio State campus which includes assault. You and I both agree that our country is split into two parts which is devastating and puts a pause on the prosperity of our country. With us working together, I definitely think we both want to use the holistic approach to try to find a solution for this problem. I do understand that everyone has their own ideas and beliefs, but at such a hard time like this, we need to be more respectful and welcoming to everyone's ideas.
