The United States has had a long and difficult history when it comes to race relations. From slavery, to Jim Crowe; from Chinese exclusion, to Japanese internment, the United States has a plethora of examples where the state failed to promote racial equality and harmony. There is no questioning that these are the facts of history, but there are many questions as to why and how these injustices occurred in a nation founded on the ideal that all men were created equal. The only way to unpack these questions is to examine and explore the notion of race itself. Some would argue that race is biological, that people are destined to be a certain way because their genetic code makes it so. Others argue that race is created by a system that pushes people into the boxes, and the boundaries of the boxes change to fit the cultural majority’s needs. The argument that this paper will peruse will be that biology will dictate phenotypes, but society, and policy are what create these tribal groups known as races. Race is understood and defined in a few different ways. One of these ways is through the use of science. There are differences between blacks and whites. And to argue that there are no differences is wrong. There is plenty of visual evidence that proves something is different, there are phenotypic traits that the various races as a rule do not share. And thus, people come to the conclusion that science will explain these differences. Some factor must exist that
