Transsexuals rank lowest in overall wellbeing (Gates). SIRS researcher writes, “The American Psychiatric Association uses the term ‘gender dysphonia’ as the medical diagnosis for people who feel their birth-assigned sex and their gender identity do not match.” Civilians need a better understanding that transgender people need better protection. People against transsexuals believe that transgender are “ghastly” and are having an “identity crisis.” Transsexuals need protection in the workplace, public facilities, and in athletics/sports. For starters, the workplace can be a dangerous place for transsexuals. To begin with, Trevor Gates states in an article, that, LGBT workers rank lowest in wellbeing and financial wellbeing as well. Considering that Americans are already in a financial crisis, this is absolutely outrageous. Everyone no matter what sex you are, should be allowed to live the “American dream.” People want to talk about America land of the free, more like America land of the sick and depraved. Secondly, Gates also states, the Williams Institute estimates that 43% of LGBT experience discrimination at work. I had a friend named Natalie, who was a transsexual, MTF (male to female) who informed me about her work life, she said it was very horrendous and intensely vigorous, almost like putting a deer in a lions din. Natalie’s workmates looked at her as if she was a monster, as if she was some type of creature that came from mars. They showed her no remorse, treating
Because of this many of them arrive to work in fear of rejection or being ‘outed’ causing them to lose their job. As discovered by expert Cosby Burns “Discrimination and unequal treatment on the job inflicts significant economic harm on gay and transgender public-sector employees and their families.” (http://www.americanprogress.org) Many open homosexuals will be turned down for employment just because of their sexual orientation despite qualifications, even though it is completely irrelevant to their skills and no one’s business but their own.
workplaces due to not feeling welcome, transgendered face double the rate of mistreatment on the job as LGBT colleagues. As written in the Huffington Post on June, 22, 2016: “While progress has been made with the legalization of same-sex marriages in some countries, many lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered people fear that revealing their sexuality or sexual orientation at the workplace will have negative consequences. The major challenge for LGBT people in the workplace is continuing harassment or discrimination. It is estimated that 40 percent of lesbians, gays and bisexuals experienced harassment and discrimination at work because of their sexual orientation. The statistics for transgender employees
In Trauma in Transgender Populations: Risk, Resilience and Clinical Care Mizock and Lewis explains factors that put the transgender population at risk such as working in the sex industry or being targets of hate crimes. (Mizock & Lewis, 2011, p. 336). This article also sheds light on some strategies and types of resources that can build resilience in transgender people. Mizock and Lewis gave a thorough description of what it means to be transgender, transsexual, transman etc. as these terms can often be misused and misapplied to this population. This article highlights some common traumatic experiences shared among the transgender population and how transphobia is contributing to this problem. (Mizock & Lewis, 2011, p.336). I feel this
The use of disability law for transsexuals has brought awesome benefits to the community, and it is currently becoming a new wave of benefits. Disability law works for transsexuals, and is currently available to people without current diagnosed gender identity disorder, so it could protect more people in the coming future, as it continues to be used. In this essay I will give a brief overview of disability law within the trans community, and gender binary populace. Throughout the essay, I shall show the more prevalent decisions to promote more transsexuals to increase their litigations for disability law.
In a lot of places around the world more and more people are coming out as “Transgender.” The term transgender means that the person’s gender identity does not correspond with the gender they were assigned as having at birth. From personally having a transgender boyfriend I have since realized that these people experience a lot of discrimination in and from society. Many people simply just do not understand what the term transgender means and they see it as someone just “wants to be a man” or “wants to be a woman.” While there may be people who present it this way, it is more so that the individual just “feels” different, and “feels” as if they are “in the wrong body.” Some people experience this feeling at a young age as my boyfriend did in his elementary age. We live in a world who put these people down for being who they truly are, and no human being wants or needs that.
About .03% of the world's population is transgender. Some transgenders undergo hormonal treatments and special surgeries to alter their sex, others only choose to alter their outer appearance, some even both. "No amount of surgical mutilation of body parts, effeminate behaviors, or artificial female appearances can make a man a woman." Title IX protects the right of transgender students to use locker rooms and restrooms that match their gender identities."How does the “feeling” of a gender dysphoric man take priority over the safety of your wife, daughter, girlfriend, mother, sister or friend." To some it's not obvious to see that telling men he can suddenly decide to “feel” like a woman can lead to sexual assault the breakage of women's privacy
Transsexuality has been variously constructed throughout the latter part of the twentieth century as a psychiatric disorder, identity category, and the basis for a political movement. Throughout history transsexualism was discursively constituted through each of these frameworks of reference, in which different psycho-medical assertions were employed to conceptualize trans identities. Today transsexuality, also known as gender identity disorder (GID), represents a term that is medically used to categorize and diagnose individuals who show a strong and persistent cross-gender identification and discomfort with their anatomical sex. For example, an individual that believes that his and or her assigned sex at birth conflicts with their psychological gender, and is likewise preoccupied with getting rid of their sex characteristics is an individual who suffers from GID. In response to the medicalization of transsexualism, much of society’s current legal and social understanding of trans persons has become rooted in the ongoing medico-scientific discourse. Moreover, modern-day transsexualism has been historically and socio-medically constructed through the growing demand for self-expression and transformation, which correspondingly challenges the sex and gender regime of the West.
In today’s society, there are divides that impede the movement of progress. These divides may disperse around a number of issues that revolve around gender, religion, sexual orientation and education. These divides have created an un-opened minded society that judge people and groups based on the prejudices and stereotypes that treat them differently. In the aspect of identity discrimination, American society plays a big role in keeping those that are different isolated from the rest of the world. Today’s society suffers huge from a spectrum that focuses power on discrimination. In this spectrum, transgender individuals are perceived as people that are most damaging than lesbians, gay men, and bisexual people. Transgendered people are
The transgender community is one that I have not fully researched and explored in my lifetime, I have seen many protest and movements on social media but never took it upon myself to research the significance of the transgender community or how it impacts my life and the lives around me. I have many people close to me that have transitioned and are apart of this amazing community and I feel that in some ways I owe them to do my research and understand this community in a better light. Throughout this paper I will be discussing the transgender community and what that entails. I will speak about a few issues that the trans community faces on a regular basis and then narrowing in on two specific issues: Sexual Assault against transgender individuals and the bathroom controversy. Before I speak about the issues facing the transgender community, I believe it will be beneficial to define some important terminology to get us as a society to understand differences between gender, sex, etc.
Gender roles of men and women have been present in society for a number of years, and the traditional roles have stuck through all the cultural changes. What about the people who do not identify themselves with their born gender but, instead another? How are they affected by how society sees them for not conforming to the traditional gender roles? Transgender people are faced with many judgements from their community based on how they identify themselves, their actions and how they express themselves. Many of the people that judge these individuals do not understand the affect that this can put on a transgender person psychologically. In this essay I will first discuss societies view on traditional gender roles, next I will talk about the
This might not be your everyday situation, but it’s a pressing reality for many people around the world. Being transgender in today’s society is unbearable and often dangerous. Fellow students, honourable teacher, today I am speaking of an ever growing problem in our society. Transgender issues have recently come to the forefront of the LGBT community in many areas; it is something that is not only relevant to their lives, but also to ours.
Imagine being trapped in a body that does not correspond to who you are. As a man, I struggle to grasp the desperation I would feel I were to wake up every day in a woman’s body. Yet, that is exactly the predicament that transgendered women and men find themselves in, and it is worth noting, through no fault of their own. In addition to the internal struggle, for years, transgendered people have also had to fight society for acceptance. Although the progress made thus far, this essay proposes that the transgender experience continues to be horrific in the United States due to lack of acceptance, discrimination, and violence against transgender people.
Members of the LGBT community have battled with societal norms since the beginning of its emergence. Here the focus will be specifically geared to the transgender members of the community. Vocabulary around the issue has changed over time as well as the meanings and connotations. Through history there have been may terms associated with gender nonconformity: 1) Transvestite: first used in 1910 to describe a person who dresses in clothing of the opposite sex, traditionally associated as men. 2) Transsexual: fist used in 1946, refers to a person who lives life as a gender different than their sex assigned at birth. 3) Transgender (Trans): first used in 1971 and is the current terminology preferred by the community. It is functions as an ‘umbrella term’ that encompasses those who identify as a gender different from their biology and includes people who may or may not undergo sexual reassignment surgery or hormone therapy (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual Resource Center,2017; Whittle,2010). Portrayal and perception of transgender persons has long been a controversial issue. Knowledge of its history and development will offer greater insight to the present-day issues and their effect on society and the LGBT community. With that information, we can apply proper techniques for social workers when dealing with transgender men and women.
As society continues to dictate how individuals should behave, dress, and speak, it does not appear that society regards itself as a friendly force for the transgender community. Transgender is “an evolving term used to describe people whose gender identity does not conform to that assigned at birth” (Davis & Mizrahi, 2011, p. 238). Additionally, the United States under former President Bush in 2007 failed to include the transgender version of the federal Employment Non-Discrimination Act, only opting to include the sexual orientation version since the former president refused to sign any version incorporating transgender rights (Currah, 2006, p 151-2). By looking at how society fails to render effective resources to the transgender community, it became evident for myself to view the transgender community as the most neglected minority that the nation fails to accommodate for; thus, the transgender community became the central focus for my final exam project.
Transgenders are a vulnerable group to the workplace, which includes the social, and political groups(Bailey, 2014). The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force did a survey and found that ninety percent of transgender workers have encountered some form of harassment or mistreatment on the job (Bailey,2014). This was included with forty-four percent being passed over for a job, twenty three percent denied a promotion, and twenty six percent of those who were fired.
