The American Revolution: A Primary Source Analysis

During the American Revolution, ideas about equality and patriotism as well as wartime conditions created new experience and shaped the developing nation. Part of this development included how these ideas and wartime conditions influenced American women’s thoughts about their roles in society. This paper will examine two documents produced by women during the Revolution to illustrate the importance of primary sources in understanding people in a specific time and place. This paper will consider what historical insight or context the two sources may provide to support or expand the understanding of the female experience during the American Revolution. In addition, this paper will determine what further questions may arise from the information gleaned from the sources.

In 1780, Ester De Berdt Reed published a propaganda broadside, “The Sentiments of an American Woman.” While published anonymously, the online database used to access the document credits the document to Reed. That the letter is anonymous leaves some question to whether the document is reliable or even written by a woman. The document urged colonial women to embrace patriotism and contribute to the war effort. Reed invoked the heroic images of the biblical …show more content…

The most obvious would be to further understanding of Reed and the Ladies Association of Philadelphia. For the purposes of understanding the female experience: What other women challenged culturally defined gender roles during the Revolution? Did such organizations as the Ladies Association of Philadelphia and revolutionary fundraising efforts serve as the training grounds for women that would influence later organized movement into the public sphere, such as with the abolitionist and anti-slavery organizations? Are roots of the American suffragist movement found with such evolutionary era women as Ester De Berdt Reed? What were women in other cities
