After Surina had put away her groceries in her new kitchen, she searched the recently updated online address book containing both the street and electronic addresses of the new arrivals from Earth. In fact, Alfonso lived with his parents only minutes away in neighboring Seneca Square on Maple Street. She sent him a message immediately, and they agreed to meet at his house the next afternoon for lunch. The rest of the day, she spent unpacking her seven boxes from Earth and settling into her new home.
Her second morning on Gnaritus dawned as both a rainy and foggy day that together added an extra layer of vigor to the cold brisk air. The hazy light of the three suns barely managed to peak through the thick stratum of clouds that even blotted out the rings of Spes. An eerie silence shrouded Huron Square as Surina left for the Spatium Borough Hospital. Due to the indelible mark left by her previous encounter with a Medical Director on Earth, she regarded her forthcoming meeting with the Medical Director of the Spatium Borough Hospital circumspectly. She passed other Gnaritonians who emerged wraithlike in their trench coats from the thick fog as if out of nowhere. Despite the inclement weather, they greeted each other good-naturedly from under their black umbrellas, warming up the chill in the air considerably. At Seneca Square, she turned right onto Cypress Tree Lane along which were the gleaming slate gray graphene buildings of the Spatium Borough Hospital compound.
With healthcare reform and the recent government shutdown, one might want to know what has made our country so divided. The truth of the matter is that our nation is still broken up into distinct regions with ideologies dating back to the first settlers. Although our nation was strongly initiated on the grounds of revolution and liberty, the entire country has not always had the same views. While we as a country have been through a great number of immigration waves, civil war, and reform, the nation is still divided into two significant blocs with opposing ideologies. While hear in the Northern alliance of reform we do not feel as much tension because of our
After Sandra was called to go into her home, Alfonso went to his house and talks to Ernie about Sandra. Ernie and Alfonso discussed her appearance such as her hair, clothing, and overall beauty. During the conversation,
Ever since that faithful day they moved onto Mango Street, Esperanza has always wanted more. At a young age, she recalls moving quite a bit, and never finding a place that screams home. Her new house on Mango Street is an improvement, yet it doesn’t satisfy her. It is small and red, with tiny windows, crumbling bricks, and everyone in her family has to share a bedroom. Esperanza remembers when a nun drove by her old home on Loomis and said “You live there”, in a quite disgusted manner. She recalls feeling sheepish, as she looked up at her raggedy house and longed for it to just vanish. At this point, Esperanza wrote
The foundation of our united nation was based on democracy. The idea of democracy didn’t come as easy as our founding founders would have liked. But with the help of a variety of scholars during the Protestant Reformation in the 16th century the practices of the Catholic Church began to be question . During the 16th century England was ruled through Monarchy. However, the Monarchy still didn’t sustain the equal amount of power as the Catholic Church.
Facts: The State of Washington is the Petitioner in this case along with the Attorney General. The Respondents are Washington medical physicians. The physicians in this case periodically treated patients that were terminally ill. The physicians claimed that they would provide assistance for the patients in ending their lives if it were not for Washington State’s ban on assisted suicides,
On December 20, 1860, just a little over a month after the election of Abraham Lincoln, South Carolina seceded the union. Becoming the first state ever to do so, and this action set the example for similar results to happen in fellow slave holding states; throughout the beginning of 1861. Although South Carolina had come very close to secession before, first during the nullification crisis of 1832, and again at the State Convention of 1852, it would ultimately come to a breaking point after the of Election of 1860. Though the full severity of this movement was played down at first in Northern newspapers at first, the real gravity of the situation would soon be felt throughout the Union. This election became the last straw in a series of
1. For the new United States to be so treacherous for some, and so grand for others is a great example that reflects the propaganda that was being portrayed to bring early Europeans and others to the colonies for the sole purpose to take over land from indigenous people. While there is no specific answer to their claims one way or another, we can see that there must have been some ulterior motives to putting on such a showcase to those far away. In the following passages we get some insight from John Smith about exactly how the new colonies were expanding and just how growth was to be achieved, “Who can desire more content, that hath small means; or but only his merit to advance his fortune, than to tread, and plant that ground he hath purchased by the hazard of his life?” (93) From Smith’s account we can see exactly what needs to be done to grow the colonies. Now we can use two other passages from Farmer James that are in stark contrast to one another, and can lead the readers to believe that the new land was some type of utopian escape from old England. Farmer James describes it as “Men are like plants; the goodness and flavor of the fruit proceeds from the peculiar soil and exposition in which they grow. We are nothing but what we derive from the air we breathe, the climate we inhabit, the government we obey, the system of religion we profess, and the nature of our employment. Here you will find but few crimes; these have acquired as yet no root among us” (608). Farmer
Often when we speak of the struggle for America we think of the Revolutionary War, or even of the Civil War. We reminisce of tales of bravado and of cunning, of George Washington and our country’s forefathers leading the revolution against the British and of pursuing the dream of a nation free from tyranny. But often the tyranny that this new nation itself took part in is largely glossed over. It is largely accepted that America unfairly pushed out the Native Americans from their homelands, but the means in which they did so was crueler than the British tyranny that we rebelled against. In Colin Calloway’s The Shawnees and the War for America, we learn of a different struggle for America, we learn of the plight of the Native Americans
“Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of America. These acts shatter steel, but they cannot dent the steel of American resolve” (George W. Bush). Bush was referring to Tuesday September 11, 2001. This day is what woke up the sleeping giant that was America and forced America to form into a great country again. Events in the 2000’s such as the signing of Bush Doctrine, creation of homeland security, Google, the successful mapping of genome, Obama becoming the first non-white president, Wikipedia was launched, all helped improve our country. Between politics, american values, foreign affairs/conflicts, popular culture, the economy, and technology/ innovation all make this century worth studying.
When looking at the history between the United States and Latin America, you see many interactions between them, all that aided the relationship that they have today. Despite that the United States and Latin America are in the same part of the world, the beliefs in which they govern may differ. This difference has often been seen playing a major role in the disputes that have occurred in past. The United States and Latin America have faced many social, economical and governing barriers in forming a strong and positive relationship in the early twentieth century, this is due to the differences that the two had between cultures and the constant demand for power. However, the two countries have found ways to meet in the middle of their cultural differences, to form an equally fair relationship.
According to The White House website, prior to the Constitution, the government of the United States was known to be practically paralyzed and ineffectual, due to being exercised by the Articles of Confederation, which established a “firm league of friendship” between the states, and vested most power in a Congress of the Confederation. This power was, however, extremely limited — the central government conducted diplomacy and made war, set weights and measures, was the final arbiter of disputes between the states, but it could not raise any funds itself, it was entirely dependent on the states themselves for the money necessary to operate (whitehouse.gov, n.d.). Decision making was not easy to accomplish. States sent
The United States of America’s economy and military is far too involved in foreign affairs. Foreign affairs are policies of a government in dealing with other countries or with activities overseas, government offices or departments. The United States has always been involved in Foreign affairs since its creation. Although foreign affairs are vital for the sake of the United States of America, the nation is becoming part of relationships and disputes that it should not be. There are many intentions of the United States Foreign Affairs. Some of the intentions are: to build and sustain a more democratic, secure, and
The United States federal government was built upon a foundation of checks and balances showing many instances of having a separation of power. The government also has instances of shared power within its branches. This was supposedly built around the idea of democracy in order to obtain a majority’s say. These systems continue to be an important part of today’s government still having an effect on how it runs. It is often important to look at how the United States government is run but in order to do that, one must look at the very definition of the separation of powers as well as its checks and balances.
At this point, Group A and Group B displayed interorganizational processes. Interorganizational refers to processes that exist between organization and other organizations in their environment (Wells, 1995). Kristine tested the boundaries by addressing her feeling towards a member in Group B after the group processed. As a result, both group members felt the system (the entire class) dynamic and setting was unsafe and loose. The mixed feelings of anger and hurt influenced the dynamics of the system for a few weeks. The group as a whole increased their personal boundaries to avoid being attacked or hurt. Group A has enter the storming phase with Group B. Storming is the conflict, polarization and resistance to the group influence and task (Tuckman, 1965). Storming should occur within the group and not between two separate groups. The group rigid personal boundaries around their roles prohibited the group from entering the storming stage with in the group. The class as a whole went through norming, and performing separate and together due to the environment and temporal boundaries. According to McCollum’s (1990), factors that influences the group development are environment embeddedness and temporal boundaries such as time. As a system, outside of the classroom environment, all members of each group are friendly towards each other. Having a group outing helped members to forget about the tension or avoid the drama by not talking about group dynamics outside of the classroom
The fifty states and capitals was one of my favorite lessons in school. I would teach this lesson in fifth grade. My goal in the unit would be to have the students know all fifty states and capitals. There is a catchy song to attach with the lesson. I remember learning, and remembering, the fifty states and capitals by hearing the content in a song. Every day, the students would learn ten states and capitals. The song would only play the states and capitals they have learned and are going to learn that day. I would share with the students that our goal is to make it through the entire song by the end of the week.
