Whenever someone asks a child what they want for a present, a puppy is usually included in that list. We consider dogs to be our constant companions and one of the only animals that is our equal. Dogs provide happiness and friendship. However, they do so much more. Canines caused the human race to survive and thrive. Without dogs, the world would be more difficult for people. Humans may owe our existence to dogs. In ancient times, Homo sapiens started to notice that feral dogs surrounded their homes. These primitive people did not get rid of the wolves because of the benefits that they offered. These canines’ find bodies out at sea by the skin particles and gases that rise to the surface of the water (Layton). It is difficult for these dogs to pinpoint exactly where the person is because most bodies of water have a current, therefore the dogs often have to work in groups and average where they alert the body is to find the real location (Layton). The opposite of water dogs are avalanche dogs that search for people trapped under up to fifteen feet of snow (Layton). One of the most common types of air-scent dogs are urban disaster dogs. Wilderness dogs can find people who have gotten lost in the wilds. Lastly are mutts that look for items that have human scent on them. Canines that do this are evidence or article dogs. Search and rescue dogs do an amazing job of finding people. According to the How Stuff Works website, “a single SAR dog can accomplish the work of 20 to 30 human searchers” (Layton). Since pups are faster at finding people than humans, they are often used considering that time is crucial in these positions; “In an avalanche situation, for instance, approximately 90 percent of victims are alive 15 minutes after burial; 35 minutes after burial, only 30 percent of victims are alive” (Layton).
