For many students, textbook studying is often the most difficult to understand. After hours of studying, the textbook becomes difficult to read and understand. Steps to improving the understanding of textbooks are to first preview the section you are about to read. By previewing a section a student can get a better understanding of how the information will be organized. Previewing the title is done first because it is the shortest summary and may give away the limits of the material that will be covered. Marking is the second step to textbook studying. Highlight important material at the same time you read through the textbook carefully. Marking is very beneficial because if a student can always go back and see important highlighted material. When studying notes a student must use the method of repeating and self-testing. Repeating and self-testing is the answer to effective learning and one must not just rely on reading their notes. How can some people struggle when they have a degree from a quality institution, while others can be successful without a college degree or in a field unrelated to their degree? I believe that certification tests would be a better replacement for the BA, because they would separate the students with the will and determination from those who are just coasting their way through their courses.
