What is peace? Although there are many word definitions of peace Merriam-Webster’s dictionary defines peace as “freedom from disquieting or oppressive thoughts or emotions.” Often times the best way to begin exploring what something is, is to begin be stating what it is not. Therefore, I shall briefly expound upon peace by examples of what isn’t peace. Many times in life we find our mental state of being to be tumultuous. Everyone has a myriad of experiences and dispositions that make life hectic. Life is very unpredictable and the circumstances in which one is placed in in life are all the more out of any man’s control. For example, a college student could state this his life is full of studying for classes late at night and waking up early in the morning to attend lectures, a salesman could say that his life is full of rushing to financial meetings and stress from worrying about meeting a sales quota, even a child could find himself lacking peace in his life because he may be perturbed by not being permitted to do something his parent deems unfit at the moment. All of these are examples of the antithesis of peace. However, the question still remains: What exactly is peace? Many philosophers have tried to answer this question throughout history and even scientist have hypothesized what peace is by analyzing the brain activity of an individual who are “at peace.” In this essay, I shall define what peace is by the definitions set by a few notable philosophers, scientists, and
