As with several other industries during the last decade, the application of digital technology is becoming widely used in many prosthetic laboratories globally. Since the cost of dental laboratory work has become a major influence in treatment design, automation technologies could facilitate more competitive production in the area of dental technology. It will also outline the advantages and disadvantages of using such technologies in dental practice. The term ‘CAD/CAM’ stands for Computer-Aided Design/Computer-Aided Manufacturing and has been used in many healthcare fields, particularly in dentistry. All CAD/CAM systems consist of three components: a digitalised scanner which transforms geometry into digital data that is processed by the computer; software that processes data for a product to be fabricated and a production technology which transforms the data to the designed product which can be either an optical or mechanical scanner. Optical scanners use a source of light (e.g. laser) to obtain positive 3D reproductions of dental impressions and casts, eliminating the need for an impression. Mechanical scanners measure casts mechanically by the presence of the ruby ball which is set to the smallest grinder in the milling system. It has an inordinately complicated mechanics, which can be very time consuming and expensive compared to optical systems. Depending upon the position of the components in a CAD/CAM system, there are three production theories: chairside production; laboratory production and centralised production.
