PASS THE INSPECTION: THE APPLICATION OF ETHICAL THEORIES TO AN ETHICAL DILEMA
Discussion with Senior Enlisted Leader
This is an instance of senior enlisted, who you should be able to trust, giving you bad advice. When the situation is hypothetical and not a pressing issue, it is easy to see that it would be wrong to allow the Chief to sign off on the maintenance checks. But in the moment, there are good reasons to have the checks signed off. Having the maintenance appear to be complete makes your division look good and helps make their lives easier. The Chief that is telling you that this is ok has been in the Navy for much longer than you have, and he has much more experience. But if you allow your Chief to sign off on the maintenance report this time, you set a precedence for future instances. It’s a slippery slope once you start down it. Additionally, this violates several of Aristotle’s virtues from Virtue Theory, such as courage and honesty. Altogether, it is clear that it might be difficult, but letting your Chief sign off would not be the right thing to do.
Three Competing Tensions
This situation is very complex, and there are several factors influencing the decision. There are three competing tensions and loyalties. First, there is loyalty to mission to pass an important command inspection, which failing would be a disservice to your ship. Secondly, there is a loyalty to trust your chief and sailors to do their job and the future relationships; if you don’t trust
Creating and defining my own ethical framework is essential in future success as a businessman, a leader, and a team player. As a business student, I have learned that it can be a very cut throat industry and in order to get ahead, at some point and ethical dilemma will undoubtedly be an obstacle I have to overcome. The way I handle these dilemmas can make or break my career; business ethics are a key part of earning and sustaining respect, trust, and a good rapport with both clients and competitors in your industry. Therefore a solid ethical framework is an important tool for me to have as a standard for handling these types of dilemmas so that I can grow successfully while staying true to myself and to
Last week, I inquired about MSG Abdullaah's orders and arrival time to Camp Parks. MSG Abdullaah's orders and arrival time was after in-processing. Also, his orders end the day before out-processing. MSG Abdullaah does not have anything to do here for 2 weeks. The 6/104th is requesting that he assist them at the battalion everyday since he's been on ground. When I addressed MSG Abdullaah's orders with MSG Butler she said that she know how his orders where requested and he will be available for out-processing. Consequently, I've asked her to provide that
Do you think people believe that ethical systems are important to the world, or do you believe you have to actually learn about it to understand? The main focus of this paper is to better understand the ethical system. Ethical system is defined as beliefs of being right or wrong; it can be from religious values or even personal experiences. The topics I will focus on is teleological, then talk a little about the differences between deontological and teleological. Secondly, my current ethical system that best fits me. Third, major influence in my life that pushed me into my specific ethical system. Fourth, my current career plans, Firth ethical issues associated with my profession, and lastly, examples of specific ethical dilemmas that professionals in my career path have to face. Based on the ethical system we have discussed in class is ethic of care.
Health care professionals are subject to a multitude of professional, legal, and ethical responsibilities which call for personal judgment to be utilized in such a manner as to protect clients as well as public wellness and interests. Overall considerations in handling such duties may be considered to be respect of a client’s autonomy, confidence, and recognition of obligations owed to all clients. While the aforementioned acts fall within the professional realm, there are also legal implications that guide care. Therefore, it can be said that ethical considerations occur in observation of legal responsibilities. Confidential information is perceived as private facts which are disclosed with the
1. What are some ways that you can “promote an ethical culture” where you work?
After commissioning, as a young junior officer, we will be tasked with unfamiliar jobs and responsibilities. It would be wise for me as a new member to meet with the Commanding Officer to see the status of the command and the division that I will be in charge of. I would also be tasked to fix the problems and overcome challenges that coincide with the position I am entrusted with. These problems and challenges may include but are not limited to low morale, work inefficiencies, incorrect procedures, incompetency, etc. Solving these problems require the initiative seek and identify the root of the problem. Having knowledge of these roots within a specific area would make it easier to determine a solution. I, the junior officer, will be able to use what I know in order to come up with the best possible way to solve the issue. With these solutions, we are able to accomplish the ultimate goal set by the CO.
The professional educator endeavors to understand and respect the values and traditions of the diverse cultures represented in the community and in his or her classroom. (AAE, 1994-2012). Educators should be sensitive to individual learning and social needs of students and embrace the cultural diversity of the community. They should develop and maintain educational communities marked by respect for others. They should interact with their students, fellow educators, administrators, parents, and other community members with courtesy and civility, and establish relationships characterized by respect and rapport. (COE-GCU Conceptual Framework, 2011).
When defining what Ethical Theory is my first thought is morals. Morals principles affects the way people make decisions and the why people live their own lives. Ethics come from a Greek work ethos, and this means character, habits, customs and dispositions. The morals that Ethical theory will display in a person life, is living a good life for them and their families, knowing what is right in life and taking care of their responsibilities. Researchers, divides ethical theories into three basic groups, first group is meta- ethics, the second group is applied ethics and the last groups is normative ethics. Meta-ethics deals with origins and ethical principles. Applied ethics is related to controversial topic like politics or war. Normative ethics concerned with moral judgements of what is right or wrong. Reflecting back to meta-ethics is having morals judgments, morals allow people need morals and value to as a person. When a person realize what is important in determine moral judgment, and the ethical
You briefly mention higher power or inner conscience, but not specifically the ethical theories related to them. For instance, the theological argument believes in an intelligent designer. If that’s the case, how does that play into how people act? Or if we need to follow duty to be moral without the need of a higher power, how does that effect a person’s behavior?
A 19 year old college student and addicted gambler was pulled over for erratic driving on the Long Island Expressway. He pulled out a toy pistol and pointed it at the officer, he was then shot and killed. Another incident involving a 45 year old cancer patient had the same ending in new Jersey. He walked into a Pizza Shop and pointed a gun at the officers inside eating. Experts believe that they force the cops to kill them as a form of suicide. Suicide is difficult to commit and forcing an officer to kill you takes away the pressure of completing the task. Some insurance companies don’t cover suicide and religions forbid it so it is away of taking the guilt and shame away from common suicide. 10% of fatal police
It is evident that Wal-Mart’s ethical perspective or moral view is contingent on profit or profit potential. The global labor force of Wal-Mart enables this retail giant to continue to grow and succeed by providing lower operating costs. The legal ethics of this company are asserted globally and would withstand scrutiny in most cases. However, the virtue ethics of Wal-Mart are questionable about the well-being of their employees, specifically the hourly employees. Wal-Mart is targeted by its own labor force in the United States and in China as well. In the United States, Wal-Mart operates on the brink of ethics by using its legal stature to suppress
The thesis of this paper is to review the Week Two Discussion Questions and address
The word “ethics” comes from Greek ethikas meaning character. Today, we use ethics to describe the normative standard of behavior. The history of philosophical ethics has been broken up into five rational methods: Virtue, Traditional, Modern, and Post-Modern Ethics. Within these periods, the philosophy of ethics changed along with the changes being made within society.
This is an outline and summary of three of the most prominent ethical theories in the history of philosophy. (Note that all three of these represent different ethical absolutist/universalist theories. A view known as ethical relativism follows these.) Please take this as a sketch that invites you to investigate these ethical theories further. After each brief sketch, I will provide some web links that will be helpful to read.
No two people are the same, and they will never be the same. Even twins have different ways of viewing things. This is the same for people ethical views, according the The Merriam-Websters Dictionary (2015) the definitions for ethics is “The rules of behavior based on ideas about what is morally good and bad.” Knowing what is morally right or wrong especially in the business world can help prevent scandals or corrupt business practices. But in today society, ethics can be blurred through situations and personal views, now it seems as though people aren’t even thinking about what is ethical but more so what can benefit them. Within recent months, news of FIFA allowing bribes to be accepted from certain people has managed to corrupted a billion dollar business and affected their corporation along with allowing the world to see their ethical views. In this paper I will be talking about whether or not this a topical of ethical views, is this a common situation with management and if it affected international business.
