Users can easily set alarms with specific components such as gradual alarm sound that allows for a gentle wake up (Ong & Gillespie, 2016). It also lets the user choice from other options such as a “Stop over sleeping” setting that requires a task to be done to turn off the alarm. This stops the users from oversleeping by making sure they are awake not going to fall back asleep or just hit snooze. Other features of the alarm include customizing snooze duration and limit. This range of functions makes this app very convenient (Ong & Gillespie, 2016). Users no longer have to have multiple applications for sleep analysis and alarms. All of the common functions users are looking for are in one place. Another strength of this app is the variety of nature and soothing sounds that aids users in falling asleep faster, allowing you to reach deep sleep faster (Ong & Gillespie, 2016). A unique feature of this app it’s the sensors ability to detect movement and determine an optimal wake up time where someone can wake without feeling groggy (Ong & Gillespie, 2016). Weakness While effectively displaying the phases of sleep, a weakness of this app is the actually accuracy of the sleep tracking function (Ong & Gillespie, 2016).This app tends to underestimate the amount of light sleep and overestimate the amount of deep sleep (Ong & Gillespie, 2016). Universal to every human from birth to death, sleep is a necessary function to survival, productivity, and happiness. While most fall asleep at night with ease, it is estimated that 50-70 million Americans battle sleep or wakefulness disorders. Although sleep disorders do not immediately present with a threat comparable to other common disorders such as depression, bipolar, or schizophrenia, sleep disorders prove very disruptive to one’s quality of life. Insufficient sleep may result in difficulty concentrating, difficulty with memory, trouble with personal care such as hygiene, driving, or managing finances, and poor performance in the workplace. While there is a wide array of sleep related illnesses that may plague any given individual,
I know that personally, I take sleep for granted. Having the ability to lie down after a long day and close my eyes, knowing that in the morning I will wake feeling refreshed and rejuvenated, is something that I haven’t really thought twice about. From reading this chapter, I have learned that many individuals are not so lucky. Sleep-wake disorders can affect a person’s life in tremendous ways. This broad category is broken down into two more specific categories – Dyssomnias and Parasomnias.
There are two types of sleep: non-rapid-eye-movement (NREM) sleep, which is divided into four stages and rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep. A sleep episode begins with a short period of four NREM stages and finally goes to REM. However, individuals don’t remain in REM sleep for the whole night sleep; it will loop between stages of NREM and REM throughout the night. The function of alternations between these two types of sleep is not yet understood, but irregular cycling and absent sleep stages are associated with sleep disorders. (1) Sleep patterns change continuously and considerably with age. The general trend is that sleep efficiency decline with age. Newborns sleep about 16 to 18 hours per day, young children (age 2- age 5) from 11 to 13 hours, adolescents from 8 to 10 hours, adults from 7-9 hours and elderly people are more complicated because of individuals’ health status, age, gender, work, and emotion. (What Happens to Your Body When You Don’t Get Enough Sleep). Every report has a different range of sleeping hours because some people have jobs at midnight, and they cannot sleep at night. Many parents don’t get seven or eight hours sleep because they need to feed their children or change the diaper when their children need it. Many people don’t really know how many hours they need to sleep for a night because they are busy with their jobs and always work
By monitoring sleep rhythms, and providing feedback about the individual's status and potential for fatigue, companies can reduce the number of accidents, increase productivity and, ultimately, increase the company’s bottom line. Workers that use a device, such as the Readiband, are better able to understand and manage their own sleep cycles by identifying times that they are not sleeping properly. Correcting sleep issues also has an impact on the individual's overall health and happiness, which helps them live
She downloaded the electronic application, "Pillow," an application available on iPhone that tracks your quality of sleep. Client said that when she started using this application, it showed that her sleep cycles varied and that she wasn’t getting enough sleep. Client stated that having a visual to show her how well she was sleeping was a good incentive to use the sleep aids and to try to achieve a better and deeper sleep overall. Client states that now her sleep cycles vary much less and she usually doesn’t wake up during her
A problem facing many people around the world is lack of sleep. With a need to put increasingly more time into school and work, people need to be sure that they will get out of bed in the morning. With regular alarm clocks, the user can hit snooze too many times or sleep through the alarm. With “Sleep Assist,” your bed becomes the alarm. Simply place your bed posts over the lifts, hang the display on the headboard, plug it in and never worry about getting up. Sleep Assist is controlled through the display on the headboard. When the alarm goes off, the lifts under the bed posts slowly begin to raise, gently lifting the sleeper to his or her feet. When you get to your feet, lower the bed through the display. While this is great for those deep/heavy
Sleep Cycle will guarantee you never wake up grumpy. The app measures your movement in the bed and wakes you up when you’re in the lightest sleep, instead of waking you up in the middle of your deep sleep.
To record my behavior each day, I used an Editor 's’ Choice application called ‘Sleep as Android’ by the Urbandroid Team on the Google Play Store. The application does not require me to record data manually everyday because it has sleep phase detection. This is an optimal way to record sleep because it does not have inaccuracy as a source of error. It is not possible to accurately record data immediately before sleep manually, therefore, the application detection function solves this problem. In addition, it also has sleep statistic, which includes data for: duration, deep sleep percent, cycles, snoring detection and noise detection. The application also takes in account sleep deficiency and sleep patterns to help improve the sleeping duration as my goal for behavior change. As a light sleeper, I tend to wake up in the middle of the night, therefore, the snoring and noise detection statistic is a great function to have for accurate recording of data.
