Greenland and Finland The Arctic Circle lies at the northernmost point of the Earth. Several countries have areas that are within the Arctic Circle. Those countries are Canada, United States of America, Russia, Greenland, Finland, Norway, Iceland, and Sweden. For decades this cold and snowy part of the word was a mystery to those outside of it. Within the last decade many television reality shows have brought the reality of this cold region of the world into clear focus for those of us that have never experienced it. Television shows such as “Deadliest Catch”, “Ice Road Truckers”, etc. Even though many of these countries share many similarities they also can be starkly different. Two countries within the Arctic Circle that …show more content…
Greenland is comprised of 836,330 square miles of surface area. This is three times the size of Texas (Clark, 1943). The northwestern section of Finland is located on the Scandinavian Peninsula, while the reminder of the country lies in Europe. Finland only has a surface area of 130,559 square miles (“Finland in facts, 2016”). The area of Greenland is nearly six and a half times greater than that of Finland. With Greenland being three times the state of Texas, comparatively Kentucky is six and a half times smaller than Texas. The vastness of Greenland dwarfs the land mass of Finland. Another noteworthy lithospheric difference between the two countries lies in the tectonic differences. Greenland is located on a single tectonic plate with no fault lines within its borders. Therefore, Greenland has no volcanic activity whatsoever. Moreover, there is no evidence that it has had volcanic activity in millions of years. With this low amount of volcanic activity, Greenland possesses some of the most ancient rocks on the planet. These rocks have been left undisturbed, because of the lack of volcanic activity. With no fault lines Greenland should not be effected by earthquakes, however glacial earthquakes are quite powerful. These glacial earthquakes have been attributed to the effects of global warming on the glacial ice that sits atop the majority of Greenland’s surface. With the calving of the ice creating a gigaton, or a
Arctic tundra can be found circling the North Pole and reaching far enough south to reach the coniferous forests of the taiga. The arctic tundra is most known for its cold, dessert-like conditions. It experiences
More than 90% percent of the food in Alaska comes in from elsewhere. Also the Circumpolar Council-Alaska looks out for coastal villages in the state. The United States and the other countries all contribute to global warming and pollution that affects the Arctic. The oogruk are the largest of Alaska’s Ice seals. The inuit live in the Arctic region, which includes parts of Alaska, a few European countries and Russia. The Inuits in Alaska are having many problems because of global warming. They are having trouble finding food while hunting and Alaska already has to find it's food from other places.
In Henry Fountain’s “Alaska’s Permafrost is Thawing”, Fountain discusses how Alaska’s permafrost is slowly thawing away. Alaska is known for its vast, snowy landscape, but that soon could be all gone. This article is directed towards people who are interested in the warming of Alaska. As the Arctic is warming at an alarming rate, wildlife is slowing disappearing and sea levels are rising.
The polar ice caps are melting at a pace few nations can afford to ignore, which is yielding potentially profitable sources of energy, minerals, and shipping. But debate is building over whether the Arctic can be developed peaceably. In the 21st century, many experts believe that climate change, technological advances, and ever increasing global demand for resources unlock the economic potential of the Polar North. The melting of Arctic sea ice to record lows in recent years has motivated many nations, mainly those with Arctic Ocean coastlines, such as the United States, Canada, Russia, Norway, and Greenland to reassess their engagements and interests in the icy polar reaches. Canada’s
As global warming has helped dissipate the glaciers and icebergs of the Arctic region, new areas are becoming accessible for commercial shipping, fishing and energy development. The Arctic Council (since 1996) has therefore taken up the challenge of mapping out sovereign bodies to legally allocate and utilize the Arctic region’s vast bounds of natural resources; to settle territorial disputes between the primary Arctic Nations. Today, countries such as the UK are discontented by the fact that the Arctic is not being treated as a country which should be divided among the international community.
3. The treeless Arctic plains north of the timberline form a region called the tundra. Most of the tundra is north of the Arctic Circle, in the north Frigid Zone. The Frigid Zones are the coldest regions on earth.

The first region of the country described in class was that of the Arctic. The Arctic tribes cover the western part of Alaska, northern part of Canada, and southern part of Greenland. People within this region are known as Inuits and their culture is very rich. The Arctic is a very cold area with little to no vegetation, and the Inuit culture and music reflects this. Just like the other regions that have been and will be described, the Native Americans of the Arctic have their own unique sound, song structure, and instrumentation. The first thing we will look at is instrumentation.
It contains an expanse of tundra with many marshes and lagoons with rivers situated between foothills of the Brooks Range and the wide, icy waters of the Beaufort Sea. Environmentalists said that this area “is the most biologically productive part of the Arctic Refuge for wildlife and is the center if wildlife activity.” The importance of these resources is not measurable. The Arctic is home to such animals as caribou, polar bears, grizzly bears, musk oxen, whales, wolves and snow geese. This area is full of wildflowers and contains water of excellent, unpolluted quality and quantity. The Arctic Ocean costal plain is an area critical to the survival of many birds and mammals (‘Alaska Wild’).
For one, the Viking homeland of Scandinavia is depicted very inaccurately, which is extremely odd as this is supposed to be a Viking map. In addition, there are multiple errors in the artistry of Greenland. At the time this map was claimed to have been created, the ancient people thought Greenland was a peninsula. Data wasn't provided until much later that proved Greenland was an island. Therefore, there is one explanation for why Greenland was depicted as an island on a supposedly historical map. That explanation is that this map is a lie! Secondly, the outline of Greenland’s coast on the “historic” map is suspiciously close to the outline on modern maps. Just more evidence in the case against this
The Arctic, a significant region full of commercial industries, has been faced with many problems concerning its environment, indigenous rights of the natives, and territorial claims between the Arctic coastal states. In the environmental aspect of this region, climate change has caused ice to melt at a faster rate that might potentially lead to more exploration for oil, gas, and minerals. At the price of this development, pollution and toxic substances will become more apparent and will cause harm to the wildlife and the people of the area. With the combined efforts of climate change and the growth of industrialization, the indigenous people of the Arctic are experience poverty and a declination of hunting, an important cultural characteristic.
The country and region that I decided to do my paper on is Greenland. The reason I chose this country is because of the commonly confused perception of this country. The other reason I figure most people cover locations such as the Caribbean or somewhere in Europe. I for whatever reason like a challenge. In my preliminary research I discovered that finding information on this location is rather difficult. The reason for this is that most of the island is covered with ice and the bulk of the information that can be found on this location concerns one thing and that is the fact that the glaciers on the island are slowly melting away due to the drastic changes in the global climate. The other reason is that
Why is the Arctic very important to us as people of the Earth? The Arctic is very important, climate change heats up the ice and makes the ice/snow melt. It doesn’t only affect one place on Earth, if one place is having an horrible time it will affect everybody else. The ice melting means it can’t reflect the sun’s gruesome radiation that causes more greenhouse gasses, which then heats up the Earth further and destroys our environment. This also the melting of the ice increase sea-levels, basically drowning us slowly. Also by the loss of ice and snow, habitations and species decrease and one thing we know about evolution: if one species dies, others will die too, eventually killing us.
I've never had a pen pal before, but then I bet you've never been to Greenland. Greenland, the worlds largest island is mostly covered by an ice cap. In the center of this island, believe it or not, the ice cap measures 9,800 ft deep! Did you know that thousand's of icebergs are formed each year in Greenland?
The Arctic is global warming’s canary in the coal mine. It is a highly sensitive area which is profoundly affected by the changing climate. The average temperature in the Arctic is rising twice as fast as elsewhere in the world (nrdc.org). Because of this, the ice cap is getting thinner, melting away, and rupturing. Here is an example of this; the largest ice block in the Arctic, the Ward Hunt Ice Shelf, had been around for 3000 years before it started cracking in 2000 (nrdc.org) By 2002, the Ward Hunt has cracked completely through and had started breaking into smaller pieces. The melting ice caps are affecting the earth and its inhabitants in many ways. In this paper, the following concepts and subjects will be
