Servant leadership is an art. It’s a model of ethical management, and approaches ethical leadership and decision making based on the moral principle of serving others first (Carroll & Buchholtz, 2012, p. 234). This concept came about from the works of Robert E. Greenleaf. He retired from AT&T after 38 years, and then he founded the “Center of Applied Ethics” which was later named the “Greenleaf Center for Servant Leadership. (Carroll & Buchholtz, 2012, p. 234). Robert Greenleaf ‘s teachings revolved around the concept of being a servant first, and wanting to serve others in order to be a leader. This paper will discuss the art of servant leadership and how it can better improve the organizational climate and subsequently, the organization as a whole. It will also discuss some of the different characteristics embodied by servant leaders.

When attention to the needs of colleagues is the priority for a leader, it’s often seen as an act of humble stewardship (Jones-Burbridge, 2012). A servant leader is one who seeks the best for other individuals and their power lies in the empowerment and inspiration that they bestow in others. In this era, there is a need to empower employees so they will be in a position to make quick decisions and respond to changes in the environment (Murari & Kripa, 2012).
