The Art Of Welding

Welding is the process of joining pieces of metal or other parts by heating the surfaces to the point of melting using a blow torch, electric arc, or other means. This careers demand has skyrocketed in recent years. According to Tri-County Technical College, welding is ranked as one of the top ten fastest growing career fields in South Carolina by the US Department of Labor (“Welding Associate's Degree”). Welding is a very meticulous career, to be a welder you have to be focused, careful and you have to have an extensive knowledge of the field to be successful. Welding requires a variety of skill sets. If a person has a variety of skills and experience doors will open up for positions such as: shipbuilding, automotive repair, and construction.

My teaching philosophy has developed over the 10 years I directed production teams as a supervisor, including the time I spent as a committee member and instructor for Sub-Zero’s in-house welding program. This past year as a Senior Laboratory Coordinator with Madison College has also shaped the values that make up my beliefs about teaching.

Anything that's not bolted together is probably welded. I’m seventeen years old and i’m a senior attending Weslaco East High School. Some interests i love doing is playing sports. Growing up I came from a very outgoing family, we usually played outside or went camping.

My profession I want to go into after graduation is pipe line welding. I just love to weld I could it all day long. Seeing that rod burn is just the coolest thing ever. I would like to weld in Alaska because that is where the money is at. It stays cold there really all year long and welding is a hot job because your are melting rods. A welders life is a tough life because your always gone from your family.

Have you ever been curious of what kind of things welders can do?Well,for my Genius Hour Project I am going to show you one of the many things welders can do I am going to make a metal sign of the State of Kentucky. I chose to do my project over welding because I enjoy the class and might make a career out of it one day. I completed my Genius Hour Project by using a program on the computer to lay out my design and the CNC Plasma Cutter. This allowed me to become better at using the CNC, how to set things up on the computer, and how you can use different things to make you a better welder.

Just have a back-up profession like welding.” I have chosen the field of welding, because I meet some of the characteristics that welders have, and my biggest influence, Ms. Bosma, told me that it would be a good profession to get into.

To become a welder, there are certain job tasks, special skills and talents as well as a higher education that is needed. For example the job tasks are to operate safely with safe work habits. Also you have to know the welding components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions. You have to Recognize, set up, and operate hand and power tools common to welding trade. You need to have knowledge for becoming a welder and some of that is design, knowledge of design techniques. Also you need to know mathematics, knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, and geometry. Now the education you need to be a welder is u need to have a high school diploma. You also need to pass a base welding test, you need to graduate from a tech school in welding. Forty One percent of people have a post secondary certificate awarded for training complete after high school. Forty percent have high school diploma, therteen percent have some college- no degree. You need to lean to heat and shape metal and need a associate of science in welding. You can also work up to forty hours a week. Some education vary by employer.

WOW!!! I am already a senior in highschool did that time go fast. Once this year is over i have to get in a mind set on furthering my education and going for my major.

If you want to be a welder, and actually have a career, you can go to a welding school and learn how to weld, or you can try to be a welders helper and just learn the trade. Welding can be a tough job if you don’t know what you are doing or you do not enjoy doing it. Welding is a fabrication or sculptural process that joins materials together (Modern Welding). This is the process that uses fuel gases and oxygen to make a molten pool of metal to fuse together two pieces of metal, called puddeling (oxy-fuel welding and cutting. Wikipedia). If you decide to weld as your profession, most welding school students have little trouble finding jobs and finding people certified to weld correctly (Welding.Wikipedia).

Welding is a career that offers choices for many industries to work in, there are many opportunity advancements and you might also have the opportunity to travel with this field. I chose this career for all the reasons listed above and the ones I will mention later.

110v machines are basically for starters, they don't provide a lot of working time like a 220v would. “ TIG welding produces a small arc, and this makes it perfect for welding high-heat conductivity materials like aluminum. TIG was created to weld dissimilar metals” (Page 1). This process was made to weld high-heat conductivity metals like aluminum and dissimilar metals like Stainless Steel and Aluminum. TIG welding is most commonly used to weld thin sections of alloy steel, stainless steel and non-ferrous metals such as aluminum, magnesium, and copper alloys. The process grants the operator greater control over the weld than other welding processes, allowing for stronger, higher quality welds. TIG welding is more complex and difficult to master than other welding types, and is slower than other types.
