The association of Southeast Asian nations (ASEAN) is a regional grouping comprising ten Southeast Asian states, which promotes intergovernmental cooperation and facilitates economic integration among its members (Fry, 2008). The organization was formed on 8th August 1967, preceding an organization that had been created in 1961 known as Association of Southeast Asia. It was formed when some foreign ministers signed the ASEAN declaration, which is normally recognized as the Bangkok declaration. The common fear of communism and the thirst for economic development motivated the formation of the organization. The organization was created to promote political and economic cooperation and regional stability along with providing a mechanism for member countries to resolve differences peacefully. Its declaration formalized the principles of peace and cooperation. The collective action problem of the organization is to encourage regional peace with stability through abiding respect for justice and the rule of law in the relationship among countries in the state plus adherence to the doctrine of the United Nations charter. Cooperative peace and shared prosperity is the fundamental goal of the organization (Than & ASEAN 2001). Also, the organization accelerates the economic growth, cultural development in the region and social progress through joint endeavors in the spirit of fairness and cooperation in order to reinforce the foundation for a prosperous and peaceful community.
