“The Atkins Diet,” a high protein, high fat, low-carbohydrate diet was introduced in 1972 by Dr. Robert C. Atkins, MD. Dr. Atkins believed that a diet high in sugar forced the pancreas to produce the hormone insulin, causing the body to store calories as fat. He believed that if we consumed fewer carbohydrates, then our bodies would produce less insulin. By doing so, our bodies would use stored fat for energy, resulting in weight loss. (1) “The Atkins Diet” consists of four phases. The first phase, referred to as the “Induction Phase,” lasts for a period of two weeks. During this phase, the dieter has to severely restrict their carbohydrate intake to twenty grams per day. This restriction is necessary for the body to enter ketosis.…show more content…
They are then to follow the glycemic index called “The Atkins Glycemic Ranking“. This index ranks new foods to be introduced into the diet that will not significantly raise insulin levels. The fourth and last phase of “The Atkins Diet” is called “Lifetime Maintenance“. Dieters begin this phase once their weight loss goals are met. Dieters are allowed to eat more carbohydrates, however only enough that will not cause them to gain weight. Breads and other starchy foods will always be severely restricted. This phase is meant to last a lifetime, and Dr. Atkins claims that eating like this causes people to become much healthier and reduces their chances of chronic diseases. (2) Certain types of foods are permitted while on “The Atkins Diet“. Most protein rich foods that have little to no carbohydrates are allowed such as meats, seafood, and eggs. Cheeses are allowed, however the dieter needs to read the food labels to be sure that they do not contain a large amount of carbohydrates. Fats and oils are recommended but the dieter needs to make sure that they do not include any which contain Tran’s fats. Virgin or extra-virgin olive oils are highly recommended. For frying purposes, the dieter should use canola, peanut or grape seed oil. Cold water fish is advised as a good source of Omega-3 fatty acids.
