The Manhattan Project was the American program for researching and developing the first atomic bombs. The weapons produced were based solely upon the principles of nuclear fission of uranium 235 and plutonium 239, The project as a whole cost approximately 2 billion dollars of taxpayer’s money and employed over 120,000 people . It was a massive undertaking to say the least. A project of this size needed justification and it seemingly came in the form of attacking the Japanese . In the 1930’s and the 1940’s there was a change in American leadership. Having this change not only changed the outcome of the war that we were currently in, but how the rest of the world would view our country after the war. The decision that Harry Truman was forced to make on the choice to drop the atomic bomb or to attempt more land invasions was a choice that shaped the outcome of the war. There were major influences and side effects from the dropping of the atomic bomb and what it did to the country of Japan. Having the option and the weight of the moral decision weighing on Truman’s shoulders about what decision should be made, he was the only one who was capable of making the decision that shaped the outcome of the war. Having dropped the bomb on Japan, as a statement of power and a means to an end in a form was the only way that American lives could have been spared as comparing that to the lives that would have been lost in a land invasion. Knowing what the issues with the bomb was; one has to look at the moral issues, the results of the incident, and also how it played in the rest of the development of the world.

It became known that the German knew how to create an atomic bomb and FDR created a committee to study and create atomic bombs, named the Manhattan Project.The Manhattan Project was significant to the war because it led to the end of World War II and caused the Japanese to surrender to the Americans. The amount of people working together along with the cost and time which led to advancements in technology that was far ahead of any enemy. The creation of the bombs delivered a push in the advancement of science, innovation, designing, military and the entire of society into another age. With the start of World War II the race for the first atomic bomb started. With Germany under Hitler’s reign, the Nazis began separating uranium to form the first atomic bomb to control the world. The push for the United States build the first atomic bomb began with this knowledge. With the help of several scientists the United States succeeded in building the atomic bomb first. Two atomic bombs were used; a uranium bomb on Hiroshima and a plutonium bomb on Nagasaki. Along with the many deaths were six stages of A-bomb illness which includes acute stages, atomic bomb trauma, A-bomb radiation illness, radiation blood injury at lethal dosage, blood injuries, and secondary radiation illness. Seven unhealed scars were also an effect of the atomic bombs that includes keloids, A-bomb cataracts, leukemia, cancers, chromosome changes, exposure in utero and microcephaly, and genetic surveys. Regulations and guidance were set in place soon after the bombings to protect the people of the world based on the information that was gathered and it has changed over the years based on the new information that was learned. With the use of the atomic bombs in World War II, a lot of pain and suffering was caused, but a great deal of information was learned to help protect future generations from radiation.

In 1942 Major General Leslie Groves began direction of the Manhattan project, a 4 year project created to make nuclear weaponry. It was headquartered out of Oak Ridge, Tennessee, but they had many locations across the United States and Canada. Some say that the Us should have dropped the Atomic bomb because of the unknown amount of people who could have died if we didn’t stop. Although, The United States shouldn’t have dropped the atomic bomb because of the cost of life, the health effects on survivors, and it pushed us into an arms race with Russia.

The purpose of the manhattan project was to develop an atomic bomb for the United States defenses. President Roosevelt ordered it to be created. And it was to be kept secret so it wasn't stolen by germans and other spies to speed up their nuclear process.

In addition, the U.S. wanted to protect itself against direct attacks like Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor.Ultimately The Manhattan Projecy created the most destructive warefare ever. President Harry S. Truman of the United States once said, “There is nothing new in the world except the history you do not know.” Over the course of WWII, the United States made developments on a new innovation and project, and it is undeniable that on August 6, 1945, they made history of what was once the unknown. The world’s first atomic bomb, known as Little Boy, was dropped on the Japanese city of Hiroshima, and a mere 3 days later, a second bomb fell upon the civilian city of Nagasaki. The United States’ decision to bomb Hiroshima is justified; however, the bombing of Nagasaki is simply inexcusable. The decision to use an atomic bomb was inevitable because it was the most efficient choice compared to alternative options such as ground invasions or involving the Soviets; however, the decision to bomb Nagasaki was made too hastily. Moreover, the use of the initial bomb demonstrated the United States’ atomic arms breakthroughs and intimidated potential opponents, but the second wreaked too much damage upon innocent civilians. At the same time, the sheer devastation caused by Little Boy compelled Japan to surrender, and brought an official end to the long-lasting second World War, while Fat Man was more detrimental than beneficial.

In my personal opinion I feel that violence and death resulting of innocent people is never justified. On the subject of the Atomic bomb the force which was used may have been very destructive but I suppose that the message the U.S was sending to Japan was clear and heard. American politicians believed that it was a necessary use of force. President Truman gave the Japanese a warning before hand saying that if they did not surrender more destruction would come their way.

Before the U.S. could start the progress and research, they had to have the right scientists and enough uranium and plutonium to design the bomb (Crewe and Anderson 10). The U.S would travel the country in need of a scientist and would come across many who would possessed exactly what the development needed. The U.S. also needed plutonium and uranium to discover how it works and learn its explosive power, which led them to create factories to manufacture these elements. In the late 1930s, leading physicists like Enrico Fermi, Albert Einstein, and Leo Szilád recommended the U.S. work on the Atomic Bomb (“Manhattan Project”). In 1942, a secret government program called the Manhattan Project was launched to develop the Atomic Bomb (“Manhattan Project”). Eventually the U.S started this project which was kept in secrecy and under the radar. Where they set up shop was in Los Alamos, high in the mountains, which helped out with their secrecy (Crewe and Anderson 13). The head of this operation was J. With everything that comes with it including a bonus; an extra letter that figuratively speaking changed the spelling of gold to “Money”. Its weight, its vigor, had a big influence, and yes, its domination found the acceptance by the most who dedicated their lives to it. For the choice that was made we were hijacked. One of the many reasons that the use of the atomic bombs were justified is because if they were not dropped than all the work and money poured into the Manhattan Project would have all been in vain.
