Have you ever wondered what it means to be human? Or what it means to dehumanize one another? As humans, we have the ability to think and use our brains. We are subject to an evolving education and to require an education. When someone is deprived of these human qualities, they are dehumanized. Everyone strives to live in an environment that enables them to learn, discuss, and act similarly. The banking concept is constructed to have the students absorb the information from the teacher. Freire claims that the students do not know much about anything and that teachers know everything that there is to know. He refers to students as empty containers and that teachers are the only ones that are able to fill the containers with knowledge. The banking concept lacks critical thinking. It is constructed so that the students can absorb the information from the teachers. The banking concept also does not encourage group discussions. The banking concept is oppressive and it denies the ability to think independently. This method of teaching keeps students from advancing as human beings. As students, we should not have to learn by the teacher-influenced method, we should be allowed to find our own methods and techniques to learn efficiently and effectively. Problem posing is a method of teaching that encourages critical thinking. It is the opposite of the banking concept. Freire feels that the students should not be passive and that they should always be actively learning but also always helping others learn as well. He also thinks that students should be able to voice their opinions when learning and also be able to challenge others knowledge and not just accept and repeat the facts that are being told to them. Additionally, Freire thinks that all learning should be active. Active learning is a big element to truly learning. He continues by offering his believed solution to this problem. The two concepts Freire discusses in this excerpt are the “banking concept” of education and the “problem-posing method” of education. The “banking concept” is talked about rather negatively, whereas the “problem-posing method” is talked about highly. But not every student is the same. Some students may find it easier to use the “banking” concept for their way of learning. It all depends on which learning environment the student is more comfortable in. Also, I believe that it depends on which type of class the student is taking. From my experiences, I have noticed that both methods have worked for retaining the necessary knowledge, but each method is best used for different subjects. For more of the memorization type classes, like math and history, I would learn more from the banking concept because those classes are mostly about remembering and memorizing certain formulas and dates in history. Any other way of remembering those math formulas and history dates wouldn’t be as effective. Even as young children we would learn the alphabet and words through memorization. At that young age the children are not mature enough to go through learning by the problem-posing method, they need to use the banking concept. But as for the subjects like the physical sciences, students would benefit more from the problem-posing method. Being involved and actually experiencing how the sciences work is much more beneficial than being lectured on the information.
Freire has made valid points as to why the banking concept of education can be poor at times. Freire expresses the attitudes and practices of society within the banking concept of education and lists that the teachers know everything and the students know nothing (319). When my teacher messed up halfway through solving the equation and I caught the mistake should I have not said anything because teachers know everything, right? In reality people make mistakes as do teachers.
David Livingstone Smith’s essay “Less Than Human” explores the topic of dehumanization and allows us to understand how it has changed the society in the past and continues to do so. The essay talks about how humans are able to belittle each other and hurt one another as it is a norm in this world now. To better understand his essay and his meaning behind it we must first analyze his purpose, audience, evidence, arrangement, implications and his word choice.
I strongly agree with the Freire views on problem-posing. Problem-posing is the best way to go about teaching students. The students have the opportunity to express themselves through communication. By expressing themselves, they are vulnerable to learning and experiencing the benefits of problem-posing. Students become interactive with the teachers who are positioned to promote a comfortable environment. This assists in creating friendships. With problem-posing, men and women are able to experience freedom and success. As a mentor for the incoming freshmen in high school, I created an atmosphere that allowed the freshmen to feel comfortable enough to be confident in who they were.
The Bank of the United States is a symbol of the long held American fear of centralization and government control. The bank was an attempt to bring some stability and control and was successful at doing this. However, both times the bank was chartered, forces within the economy ultimately destroyed it. The fear of centralization and control was ultimately detrimental to the U.S. economy.
Thesis: There is evidence that people have dehumanized others at least since the beginning of civilization. There are references to enemies and foreigners as subhuman creatures in the literatures of ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, and China, and it is also present in the cultural practices of indigenous people all over the world. When people dehumanize others, they think of them as subhuman creatures or inanimate objects rather than as human beings.
