Chapter 3: Methodology
The goal of this study is to first, investigate the barriers with implementing learning languages in intermediate schools and the difficulties with the provision of foreign languages to Year 7 and 8. Second, find the solutions and innovations to implementing language learning curriculum in Year 7 and 8. This chapter describes how the study was conducted and how the data is collected in order to answer the research questions and achieve the aim of the research.
Research method
The method of the research is qualitative using semi-structured interviews. Qualitative researchers are interested to see how people make sense of their world and experiences and understanding the meaning they have constructed (Merriam, 2009). The qualitative research deals with texts, images and sounds while quantitative research deals with numeric data.
The qualitative method is more depth than the quantitative method. (Greeff, 2010) indicated that the aim of the qualitative is to collect rich and in-depth data in order to gain understanding of a particular interest and interpret it. To collect this data is through getting the information from the first-hand knowledge of the particular interest and through their life experiences (Polit & Beck, 2013). This is why i chose to interview language teachers; they have the direct knowledge that is gain through experience and observation about the challenges of implementing language learning curriculum and how they have addressed
tertiary (college) education. Primary and secondary education is usually imparted at public schools although a strong network of private schools also exists. All educational programs in France are regulated by the Ministry of National Education.
Schooling in France is mandatory as of age 6, the first year of primary school while secondary education consists of collège for the first four years after primary school and the lycée for the next three years. The baccalauréat is the end-of-lycée diploma that
