The environment in the movie is very important since it not only plays a role of making the locating for the characters but also emphasis the truthfully moods of the story and feeling of each characters in that scene. The Batman Return also has a very real environment that assists the mood of the story. In this film, Gotham City is one of a good example of the Dystopian World which is place that everything is bad and unpleasant. It seems to reveal some of this features through some of the architecture of the Gothic style in the film. In fact, the dystopia has the prominent features in the Batman Returns are the overcrowded of buildings, sculptures and even people. People on the road is very small and the buildings are higher than the ordinary building in reality. These can clearly indicate enormous number of inhabitants living in this town with the fear which highlighted by dark and dim night, and winter as the environment in the film. Also, in the movie, batman was influenced from the Gargoyles, one of the Gothic’s style sculpture, so Batman can be compared as a Gargoyles stone brought to life to make people scary of doing bad things. Apart from the building, some of the sculpture are also in the massive sized, for instance, in the scene that most people of the town gathering in the Christmas Ceremony. There are two monuments that are in very large scale. Furthermore, interior scenes also motivated by the Gothic Architecture such as the underground place of Penguin has the “flying buttress” as a high vault to emphasis on the power that he gain at the underground
