The Battle Of Roanoke Island

John White left for supplies with 117 people in his colony in Roanoke, VA and came back two years later (Lane). Everything had completely vanished. How could someone leave and when they get back everything is just gone? Roanoke Colony completely vanished nothing left; no bodies, no supplies, but there are many theories dealing with the fate of the colonists.

Jamestown is thought by most of to be the first colony in the New World but this is not the complete truth. Jamestown is considered our first successful colony; however it was not the first attempt at a colony. There were a few attempts to colonize the New World before Jamestown and one in particular that was the most mysterious is the Roanoke colony, also known as the Lost Colony. The colony got this name because the colonists that were there vanished mysteriously with no trace of what happened.

For centuries, the Lost Colony of Roanoke Island has been a controversial issue. Many theories exist that explain the disappearance of the colony. Some theories suggest that the colonists left the island to live with friendly neighboring Indians. Others suggest that a hurricane wiped out the colony or that a savage Indian tribe massacred them. The possibility of disease destroying them is also a debated topic. However, evidence indicates that the men and women left behind on Roanoke Island did not die because of massacre, disease, or starvation but went to live with the Croatoan Indians.

This battle lasted from May 8th, 1864, until May 21st, 1864. This battle was fought between the army of Ohio, the Army of Potomac, and the army of Virginia. The Army of Ohio and the Army Potomac were teamed up as the Union while fighting against Virginia, the Confederates. The generals were: Ulysses Grant, George Meade, and Robert Lee. This battle was held in Spotsylvania County, Virginia.

The Roanoke was an important part in Virginia history, it was the first attempt for a permanent English settlement in the new world. It was founded by Sir Walter Raleigh in the 1585 and he brought 100 colonists with him to Virginia and left them behind. Walter also had brought his daughter which soon gave birth to the first English child born in America. Her name was Virginia Dare. He had to go back to England because he had to fight in the Spanish war. He sent a fleet of ships in between the 3 years he was fighting but they did not make it to the settlement, instead they landed on a different island and the captain of the ship refused to go any farther than that island. When Raleigh returned 3 years later the only clues that him and the colonists that came with him found were the words CROA and CROATON carved into 2 trees. Before Raliegh had left them 3 years earlier he told them if there was was any trouble then to carve a cross in a tree. They searched all the trees around but did not find any crosses carved. But recently they have done a tree test on the wood that the word CROATON was carved into and they figured out that when he was gone there was extreme drought conditions that were going on while Raleigh was gone. Nobody really knows what happened to the settlement but there has been very educated guesses from historians. One guess came from a historian studying this subject ”That the croaton indian tribe 50 miles away might have something to do with it.” But the

In the summer of 1587 a group of nearly 120 men and women from England arrived on Roanoke Island, one of a chain of barrier islands now known as the Outer Banks, off the coast of what is now known as North Carolina. This group of settlers set sail from England with the mission of making the Queen's wishes a reality.

On July 22, 1587, long before the Pilgrims arrived at Plymouth Rock, 117 hopeful colonists from England landed ashore onto a tiny island along the coast of what is today North Carolina. The group unpacked and founded a settlement, Roanoke Island. Then they vanished without a trace.

The lost colony of Roanoke was a colony on an island off of the North Carolina coast. It is now located in the Outer Banks. Their governor returned to England for supplies, his return was delayed by a war between England and Spain. He returned three years later and found nothing but the buildings they built. It is believed the colonists split into many smaller groups and unified with local American indians. The main indian tribe they joined was the croatoins. There are many reasons why they left. We will explore the reasons why they left and where they went.

Starting in the year of 1607, English colonists set out to explore the New World. They all hoped to start a successful and thriving colony, and discover new land for England. They were also sponsored by the Virginia Company, who were a group of merchants that were expecting to make some money off this journey. The settlers finally sailed into the mouth of Chesapeake Bay which is located near modern-day Virginia. They claimed a settlement which was to be known as Jamestown.

It was the age of discovery that first provoked intrigue and curiosity of new lands, particularly the Americas, and how the Europeans could expand to fit their society within the borders of this unknown and unexplored land. By the 1580s, more had been learned about the Americas, but any colonization until this point had not even been attempted. And so it was the English, under Queen Elizabeth I's rule, that were issued to establish a colony along the east coast of North America. However, when this great accomplishment was finally made in 1587, it was not long founded until its ultimate fate ended in the disappearance of the colony three years later, instantly creating one of the greatest

In 1607 three ships carried more than 100 passengers that found an island and named it Jamestown. But little did they know what terrors lay ahead of them. In 1607 three English ships had traveled through Cheesecake Bay and sailed up to the James river. The three ships than found an island and named it after King James. In the beginning only men came to the island, but after some years women and children began to come to Jamestown as well. Jamestown was not full of animals. Jamestown was full of death and misery for the English. From 1607-1610 many Jamestown colonists had their lives stolen from them due to Indians, lack of food, and disease.

The Roanoke colony was founded by Sir Walter Raleigh. The colony disappeared as the Anglo Spanish War was going on in 1590, three years after the last shipment of supplies from England to Roanoke. When Roanoke disappeared this gave it the nickname "The Lost Colony." There has been no exact evidence as to what happened to the colonists who disappeared. The only hint to what happened was a carving on a tree trunk that said “Croatoan”. Croatoan was small group of native americans that lived by Roanoke.

Years before Jamestown, in 1587 a man named John White and 117 men, women, and children sailed from England to the coast of what is now North Carolina. They did this in hopes of starting a new colony on the untenated territory of Roanoke Island. They established a temporary understanding with the native islanders and consummated the first baby in the New World, but soon afterwards problems arose. Supplies were quickly becoming scarce and issues started to arise between the settlers and the natives of the land. White returned to England in despair asking for help from Sir Walt Raleigh who had been the sponsor of the expedition. While he was successful in his voyage to convince Sir Walt by the time of his return all the settlers had vanished off the face of the Island.

For hundreds of years the story of The Lost Colony has been told to children for generations. Contrastly, as time trickles by we find out more information about the “Lost Colony”. Most people believe that Roanoke were killed by the Spanish. However, because of recent discoveries. Roanoke must have been forced to relocate because of a drought in route to Chowan River and intermarried with Native Americans because of these new revelations.

Colonists arrived on Roanoke Island in 1587, with the hopes of becoming the first English colony in America (Bernstein 2:55). The colony was to be governed by John White and was composed of English families who wished to make a new home for themselves, among the colonists was John White 's daughter, Virginia Dare. Several months later the colony 's governor sailed back to England for supplies. The shortage of supplies was due to skirmishes with the Natives, loss of supplies due to storms, and with the time for planting over the colonists had no way to find enough food. John White promised to return as quickly as possible, but due to unforeseen circumstances was unable to return as soon as was expected. Three years later, John White returned only to find
