The Battle of Gettysburg was a very important and significant battle that occurred during the Civil War from July 1 to 3rd of 1863. In this battle between the Union and the Confederacy, there were an estimated 51, 112 casualties, and a total 165,620 total forces that were involved. After a victory over the Union forces at Chancellorsville, General Robert E. Lee marched on with his Army of Northern Virginia to Pennsylvania and arrived on July 1, 1863 with the intention and desire to collect supplies in Pennsylvania, and remove the fighting portion from the already war-crazy Virginia. They blocked off and defended a number of hills that were south of Gettysburg with their numbers of soldiers, which was about 90,000.men. The Confederates were outnumbered greatly because they only had 70,000 compared to the Union’s 90,000. What they did was they wrapped around the positions of the Union’s positions. General Lee ordered a very heavy attack on some of the key surrounds of Gettysburg such as Devil’s den, a peach orchard that was nearby, The Little Round Top, a Wheatfield. At the very end of the day they were able to keep the Union from taking over The Little Round Top, but the damage that had been done, for both sides as a matter of fact was tremendous. The grand total number of casualties just for those two days came to 35,000 which was definitely a first in being the greatest number for just a 2-day battle. The Confederates stood ground until the very end, except it was the Union that really had more power left at the end of that day. July 3 On July 3, the fighting still continued on just as it did the day before at Culp’s Hill. About a third of the way into the day the battle still looked like a pretty easy win for the Union because they were still strong army number wise, and were still skillfully defending against The main highlight and most significant/important portion of that day was the assault performed by about 12,000 of the Confederates towards the Union center in Cemetery Ridge.
