The Beginning of the N.F.L.
The year was 1920 and pro-football was in a state of confusion. The three main problems that led to all the confusion were, salaries rising, players jumping from team to team and the use of players still enrolled in college. So, on August 20, 1920, a group of men representing the four current pro teams met. When the day was done the American Professional Football Conference was born.
The A.P.F.C. was formed to make one governing body over pro football. Then, on September 17, 1920, a second organizational meeting was held. At the second meeting the following teams attended: the Akron Pros; Canton Bulldogs; Cleveland Ohio Indians; Dayton Ohio Triangles; Decatur Illinois Staleys Athletic Club; Hammond

On September 26, the first game, which featured an APFA team was played at Rock Island's Douglas Park. A crowd of 800 watched the Independents defeat the St. Paul Ideals 48-0. A week later, October 3, the first game matching two APFA teams was held. At Triangle Park, Dayton defeated Columbus 14-0, with Lou Partlow of Dayton scoring the first touchdown in a game between Association teams. The same day, Rock Island defeated Muncie 45-0. At the league meeting in Akron, April 30, the championship of the 1920 season was awarded to the Akron Pros.
The APFA was later reorganized, they realized that Jim Thorpe was a better player then president. So, they picked Joe Carr as the new president. Carr moved the Association's headquarters to Columbus, drafted a league constitution and by-laws, gave teams territorial rights, restricted player movements, developed membership criteria for the franchises, and issued standings for the first time. This made it that the APFA would have a clear champion. The league was also increased to 22 teams. It was during this year that the Green Bay Packers were granted a franchise. It was during the 1921 season, that Fritz Pollard was made the first black head coach in the history of Pro-Football.
The Chicago Statleys who would later become the Bears were crowned the 1921 league champions. Nothing really big happened for the APFA in 1922 except for a name change,
In the 1920’s, football players actually died on the field! Insufficient protection and rules against hits, which are banned today, resulted in the death of players. Football rules have changed drastically from the 1920’s through 2016. In the past few decades, NFL owners meet annually to discuss and vote to implement new rules. Three changes to the 2016 NFL football rules, Point After Attempt (PATs), coach to player communication, and chop blocks affects the way the game is played.
The first ever NFL draft was held in 1936. The first televised NFL game was on November 22nd, 1939 in a game between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Brooklyn Dodgers. The

We see injuries in pretty much every sport now a days. People refuse to let their children play sports because they are worried of them getting hurt. Football is one of those sports that have to deal with injuries on a daily basis. Football as a sport is highly praised in the United States. People truly love not only playing the game but also watching the college players and the professionals. The game of football first originated on November 6, 1869. It was actually two universities—Rutgers and Princeton—that made up the first college football game. The first NFL game was played on December 18, 1932. Football has clearly been around for a really long time and there seems to be no sign of the sport slowing down.
The two conferences were the NFC which stands for National Football Conference and the AFC which stands for American Football Conference(NFL,1). These conferences started making many rules so less players would be getting injured during play or practice. For example, in 2007, the NFL decided that any player knocked unconscious during a game or practice would be banned from returning to play during that same game or practice. They would have to go to the doctor and get checked by doing different tests. Each team has a doctor to do these tests for them, however, sometimes the players must go to a doctor at a hospital. This is done because some people believe that team doctors are not always accurate because they want the player back on the field quickly rather than waiting until they are completely healed. The coaches also pressure the doctors to give an answer faster which can cause problems. Another example is to reevaluate the techniques of tackling and blocking so it can be done in a way that prevents players from being knocked unconscious. There are many different ways that blocking and tackling can be fixed so it does not injure the player(NFL,1). They have outlawed and penalized hits on a defensive player to lower the
The NCAA dates back to the early 20th century when president Theodore Roosevelt encouraged reforms to college football practices, which had resulted in a lot of injuries and deaths. Henry MacCracken of New York University arranged meetings about the football rules and regulations. On December 28, 1905 in New York, 62 education institutions became members of the IAAUS (Intercollegiate Athletic Association of the United States), which is now better known as the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association). The NCAA started out as a rule making body. Finally in 1921 the first NCAA championship was born: the National Collegiate Track and Field championship. Later more championships were formed, including the big “March Madness” basketball tournament in 1939.
Her name was Iva Miller. Soon after he signed a contract to play baseball with the N.Y. Giants. The pitch he struggled the most with was the curveball. Thorpe batted a 0.252 average over a six year career with the N.Y. Giants, Cincinnati Reds, and The Boston Braves. On his final year his batting average went up to 0.327. Thorpe was much better in football than in baseball. The first team that paid him to play was the Canton Bulldogs. He got $250 per game. He signed this contract is 1915. In 1916 he and his team won the championship with a score of 17 to 19. The Bulldogs were one of the 14 teams that made up the A.P.F.A. ( American Professional Football Association ). Soon After that it was renamed the N.F.L. ( National Football League ). Thorpe was the president of the N.F.L. for a season. In 1922-1923 Thorpe coached and played for the Oorang Indians, an All Native American team. This team was sponsored by a person named Walter Lingo. He ran a place called the Oorang Dog Kennels in LaRue, Ohio. Sometimes to entertain the audience the team players would perform war rituals and other dances. Thorpe played for 4 teams in 1928. Those teams were the Cleveland Indians, the Rock Island Independents, the New York Giants, and the Chicago

Discuss the challenges faced by three of the following groups: business, labor, the city, and farmers. How did each of these sectors endeavor to find stability through a search for order through organization?
(FIFA) in 1904 the United States did not have a soccer team participating. It was not until 1913 that the U.S. applied for FIFA membership, but there were two main American leagues that wanted to join. FIFA said there couldn’t be two different leagues and so the United States Football Association (USFA) was established on April 5, 1913, giving the U.S. a international representation in the soccer world.
The 1920’s was an era of role models and great heroes. This period was known as “The Golden Age” of sports. This was a time where Americans wanted to put the memory of the World War I in the past and appreciate life. It began with the Black Sox scandal of 1919 continuing with historic record breaking athletes. The introduction of radio made is easier for fans to follow their favorite teams. The economy of the United States was strong for most of the time. New and bigger stadiums were built and for the first time Americans began to pay money to watch such high level of competition. This is a decade to be remembered.
In order to truly appreciate the overall beneficial influence football has had on American culture between the 1890’s and 1930’s, we cannot turn a blind eye to the negative obstacles football has overcome. In the early years of development, football was played similarly to rugby and universities played by different rules, making standardization within the sport a difficult task to accomplish. One of the major problems observed during the infancy of football was the sheer violence witnessed on the field. Mass play was the common play style during the first years of football in which the entire offensive force would focus on one spot of the defense; the offense was determined to go through the defense rather than go around them. The raw power behind these plays lead to serious injuries as well as the death of a player in the early 1900’s. This disastrous event deterred numerous universities from playing football out of fear of a repeat of events. Following more serious injuries
Today, the National Football League (NFL) is the largest professional American football league, consisting of thirty-two teams from major American cities and regions. The league was formed in 1920 as the American Professional Football Association, and adopted the name "National Football League" in 1922. The NFL is one of the major professional sports leagues of North America.
The first professional games took place between athletic clubs. The first player to play for money was William W. "Pudge" Heffelinger. "Heffelinger played at Yale University where he made the Walter Camp All American team for three straight years. Heffelinger was paid five hundred dollars to play a game for the Allegheny Athletic Association of Pittsburgh. Heffelinger is known as the first professional football player" (Source H). The first professional to sign a contract was Grant Dilbert who signed with the Pittsburgh Athletic Club. Soon after this, many teams started paying money for the best players. "On September 17 1920 representatives met to form the American Professional Football Association (APFA)" (Source H). In 1922 the APFA was renamed the National Football League (NFL). During this time, any town that could fund the money was forming a football team, even two Philadelphia baseball teams established professional football teams. During this time, professional football was not as popular as college football. Due to betting and recruiting scandals, Americans were not as interested in the NFL as they were in the collegiate games. The league reached an all time low in 1932 when it had a membership of eight teams. However, over time the formation of legendary teams like the Decatur Staleys, later renamed the Chicago Bears, and the small town Green Bay Packers, and also due to the emergence of heroic players, this new league would win
