According to Business News and Financial News, Veterinarian is one of the twentieth best careers, and the twelfth best health care job to obtain. One reason why this particular career is so popular is because there is a large hiring demand. It is also ranked high for the level of stress level and work life balance, salary, and employment rate (“The 100 Best Jobs”). The above facts are the reasons why this is a career that I can see myself pursuing in the future. Being in the Veterinary Medicine career comes with a great deal of responsibilities, benefits, negative aspects, and an excessive amount of schooling.
Veterinarians have been around for a long time. “The story of veterinary medicine goes back to Urlugaledinna, who lived in 3000 BC in Mesopotamia” (“History of the veterinary profession.”).
In Veterinary medicine career there are many activities performed on an everyday basis. Veterinarians are expected to examine, diagnose, treat, perform surgery, euthanize, and prescribe medication for animals on a daily basis. Veterinarians have a great number of duties to complete during their work day.
There are many benefits of being a Veterinarian. One particular gain from being a Veterinarian is the salary ("Malone, Maureen"). Although the “earnings of Veterinarians depend on the type, size, and geographic location of the practice and the individual's amount of experience” (“Veterinarian”), in 2012, “The median annual wage for veterinarians was $84,460” (“Pay”). Veterinary technicians first started out just being people being taken out of the street and trained to help vets do anything they needed help with. But in 1908 The Canine Nurses Institute in England made an organized effort to train veterinary assistants. it took the next 53 years for any university or college to set up a program just for animal technician. The first animal technician education program was established at the State University of New York Agricultural and Technical school in Delhi. The man that set up the program was Ralston Purina, he developed the very first animal technician training correspondence course for training laboratory animal technicians in the U.S. In 1965 the first British Veterinary Nurses Association was established, Also during this time Walter Collins, DVM receives federal funding to develop a modern curriculum for training Veterinary technicians. From a very young, becoming a veterinarian has been a dream of mine. The love of animals coupled with the thought of helping those animals through suffering and having the opportunity to actually save one's life has been a motivator for the future. A veterinarian changes an animal’s life in more ways than one. They care for the health of animals. Veterinarians are also able to diagnose, treat, and research medical conditions and diseases of not just pets but also livestock and wildlife ("Summary" U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). It goes beyond the annual vaccinations.
As stated before, the field of veterinary medicine is in great need of RVT's. This has opened the door to a whole new career field for RVT's. RVT's can be expected to find
The salary of a veterinarian varies from state to state, along with the numerous obligations for the position. The income across the United States differs across state lines. It can be from $60,000 per year, up to $140,000 (Kramer). The average yearly income of a veterinary physician in the state of Pennsylvania is $100,000. The responsibilities of a vet are widespread,
The outlook of this job is predicted to grow substantially over the next years. “Employment of veterinarians is projected to grow 9 percent from 2014 to 2024, faster than the average for all occupations. Veterinarians will continue to be needed to diagnose and treat animals.” (Veterinarians; Career, Salary, and education information). The reason for veterinarians being in such a need in the future is because like there will always be people, those people will always have pets. Those pets will also always need someone to take care of them, just like all people will always need doctors. Veterinarians, in general, will always be needed but, different areas of the veterinary field will be needed differently in the future. For example, food and animal veterinarians (a type of Large Animal Veterinarian) will be especially in need in the future because as the population of the planet is always increasing, those people will always need food which requires a veterinarian to administer healthcare to those food-producing animals. Also, because colleges not only train vets in the study of treating animals they also train vets in fields such as public health, disease control, corporate sales, and population studies therefore if they do not have any interest in the more common fields they will almost certainly be able to find a decent job in another. Even though the veterinary field is on a steady incline for
Becoming a veterinarian takes a lot of hard work and many years of schooling, but it is an immensely satisfying job for those that are comfortable with and passionate about working with animals as well as people. Veterinarians offer medical care to by diagnosing and treating sick animals, which are often household pets, farm animals, and zoo animals. Everyone has to have a job, meaning that I am going to need one too, when I grow up. Which also means that I am going to have make a choice between the hundreds of jobs available. I thought long and hard over this, and have come to the decision of becoming a veterinarian, or to have some kind of job that is associated with animals. I am choosing this type of job because I care and love animals and when I think of any animal being mistreated or hurt I have to do something, help in some way. Though what I didn’t realise was, that it would be even harder to choose what type of veterinarian, among the several that there are to choose from. I have chosen the top three jobs that I am going to take into real consideration. One of
Veterinarians earn a median salary of $88,490 per year. The salaries typically start from $53,210 and rise to $158,260. If one is a starting veterinarian, they would get paid less than what a top end veterinarian would make. Veterinarians with board certification in a specialty area can earn the highest salaries. A veterinarian’s average hourly wage is $47.59. Those who are employed by the federal government averaged a salary of $93,398 per year. The average veterinarian’s salary increases at a rate of nearly 6% each year, overtaking both inflation and cost of living increases. While most veterinarians aren’t choosing this career merely for the money, this is a very stable profession that has a great outlook for salary growth in the future ("How Much Can a Veterinarian Expect to Get Paid?").
The Amount of money you make depends on how much experience you have in the work area. “Earnings for veterinarians depend on experience, responsibilities, location, and employer” (John). When getting in to the work force of a veterinarian the amount of money you earn depends on what you can and cannot do. If you do not know as much as everyone else that just started out then you do not make as much money. Going to school and learning as much as you can then you can make a bunch of money. If at first school does not help you then keep on going at it and you can learn more then you ever thought you would. There is nothing wrong with needing more help when it comes to school if it helps you later in life to make more money. When first going in you can make $74,820 annually, median wage $96,260 and experienced wage is $123,500. The more you know the better chance of making more money. The amount of money you make depend on the amount of experience.
I chose this career because ever since I was little, I have always loved animals. I have always wanted to be a Veterinarian. In elementary school when we had career day, every year I would dress up as a Veterinarian. I also love science and biology, so I thought it would be a good mix of the things I love. I think this career would be perfect for me.
It wasn’t until the Ancient Romans that treatment for diseased animals was discovered”. After the Romans, the largest advancement did not come until the 1700’s the treatment of animals was solely done by blacksmiths. There was little knowledge about disease and how to best treat them. The development of veterinary science and the founding of the first School of Veterinary Medicine in Lyons-France helped to further the field. This was brought about thru understanding the anatomy of animals and even people. Initially the Veterinarian profession was centered in horses and this remained the focus for many years influenced by the needs of the Armies during this time. However, over time the interested of the profession spread to cattle and other livestock, then to dogs and now to companion and exotic animals. The direction of the profession has always been driven by the needs of the people whether it be for transportation, farming, companionship, or the preservation of a
A career in being a veterinarian should be obtained by a person who enjoys caring for animals, and sometimes having to care for their owners when they have to make hard decisions. Employment opportunities for veterinarians are expected to grow for all veterinary related occupations. Rising incomes, education, and the movement of baby boomers is expected to raise the percent of household pets. Single adults and senior citizens have come to appreciate animal companionship more than in the past. Pet owners are more willing to pay for more elective and intensive care than before. Emphasis on scientific methods of breeding and raising livestock, poultry, and fish, and continued support for public health and disease control programs will contribute to the demand for veterinarians. The employment outlook is especially good for veterinarians with specialty training such as equine medicine and surgery.
The roots of my passion for veterinary medicine stemmed back to when I was in kindergarten. Looking back, it was Christmas day of the year 2000, and my parents just gave me a video cassette tape in a beautifully wrapped box that contained a documentary. The elephants and their natural habitats in the documentary unexpectedly changed my life forever. After watching the whole documentary, I just could not resist the urge to rewind it and replay the whole thing again and again until the tape was too scratched up to function properly anymore. At the time, just watching the animals living happy and healthy lives brings me tremendous joy. Then in the third grade, I discovered the profession of veterinary medicine from a mini career show and tell
