Caffeine is now the most widely used stimulant in the world. It is a stimulant in humans and is mostly distributed through drinks including tea, coffee, soft drinks, and chocolate. (Gilbert, 2012)

Caffeine’s chemical name is 1,3,7-trimethylxanthine, based on its formula, C8H10N4O2, and molecular structure. Caffeine is the most used psychoactive drug worldwide. It is also a natural substance found in many plants, including coffee beans and tea leaves. Kola nuts and cacao pods also contain caffeine. Benefits of caffeine include preventing diseases like stroke and certain cancers, lowering the risk of Parkinson's and dementia, as well as boosting concentration and memory skills.
However, caffeine can react poorly with some medications and it can worsen insomnia, anxiety, and heartburn. Caffeine is a drug and too much of it can cause addiction, severe headaches and a rise in heart rate or blood pressure.
Side effects of caffeine include headaches when too much caffeine is consumed or due to a sudden stop in consumption. Other effects of an overdose include confusion and hallucinations or even death due to convulsions. Caffeine raises the concentration of acid in the stomach and may cause heartburn or an upset stomach. Rapid or irregular heartbeats and breathing difficulties could also be due to an overdose.
