You finally made it; your last year of high school. You’re anxious and ready to get out in the world and make something for yourself. But how do you do that? By furthering your education and going to college or a post-secondary education. Even though we just got done with 13 years of school. That’s basically what most of my classmates thought as we were about to graduate last year. In this society, students must further your education to be able to live at times. College education is no longer just an option, or a privilege, like it used to be. It’s now more of a necessity to be financially successful in life. With having student loan debt, it often forces college graduates to move back in with the parents, delay marriage, financial independence and other adult milestones, such as the “transition to adulthood”. The milestone includes finishing school, moving out, being financially independent, marrying and having children. In the 1960’s, more than 3/4th of women and 65% of men completed the milestone of “transition to adulthood” by the age of 30. Today, less than 50% of women and 30% of men pass the milestone by age 30. That’s a big decrease in almost 40 years. So, what’s the point of a college education?
Effects of getting a college degree can be good and bad. Already mentioned was the heinous student loan debt. But theirs so much more to it. College graduates make more money. That is, if you can use your degree. Many recent college graduates are un- or underemployed, mostly because of either competitive workforce, or the major you picked is not as important as you thought it was. More jobs nowadays require college degrees. Only 34% of American jobs only require a high school diploma or less in 2017. College graduates have more and better employment opportunities as well. That’s common knowledge to most college goers. You go to college to get a better job and better income. But college degrees do not guarantee learning or job preparation. 30% of college graduates
