The black bear, ursus americanus, roams in different places in America including Texas. Its North America the black bears habitat ranges from Mexico all the way to Canada. In the state of Texas, the black bear is under threatened status, it also has the same status under the United States (Texas Parks and Wildlife Department). According to the Texas Parks Wildlife Department (2016) in the state of Texas they are usually found in the Western area in the Trans Pecos ecoregion. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (2016) has reported that there have been recent sightings of the Louisiana Black Bear in the Eastern part of Texas, where they used to have a strong population. This comes as surprising since the Louisiana Black Bear has an endangered status in the United States, as well as in the state of Texas. Even though the black bear species population in Texas is not as strong as it used to be in the past, many efforts are being done to recolonize the black bear in the South Western region of Texas by, studying their habitat as well as their eating habits, checking the DNA of the bears already in the area to see their genetic structures, regulating protection policies for black bears, and educating the people on the species. There are two subspecies of black bears in the South Western area of the state of Texas, which are the Mexican Black Bear, ursus americanus eremicus, and the New Mexican Black Bear, ursus americanus amblyceps, both species have been seen in the area
Today, Louisiana has made extraordinary rescues with species that were once considered threatened or endangered. Due to safe planning and the Endangered Species Act, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service projected to remove the Louisiana Black Bear from the list of threatened species. In May 2015, approximately 350 black bears to 600 black bears existed in Northern Louisiana in which $900,000 was invested to restore its population. Severe habitat loss of the black bear is what initially led to the decline in the population. In 1992, the Louisiana Black Bear was placed on the list of endangered and threatened species and in May 2015, they were officially removed (Wildlife Division - Texas Parks and Wildlife Department,
Since then, between deforestation, unregulated hunting prior to 1950’s, habitat loss and habitat fragmentation, have resulted in the loss of a substantial portion of the Florida black bear population and 80% of its habitat. As a result, in 1974 the black bear was listed by the state of Florida as a threatened species in through-out the state with the exception of The Apalachicola National Forest and Baker and Columbia counties. At that time all hunting for Black Bears in the state of Florida was suspended until future notice.
This is approximately the same range of the Great Bear rainforest, which is a part of the larger North Pacific temperate rainforest (Appendix 1 Map 2). It falls within the biogeoclimatic zone of the coastal western hemlock which consists of cool and wet climate due to its proximity to both ocean and the mountain range (Klinka & Reimchen, 2009). This zone is home to a variety of distinct species such as coastal wolves and pacific salmon (Ferguson, 2006) and makes up approximately a quarter of the world’s temperate coastal forest. This region is so important due to the fact that it is basically one of the lungs for the world, storing massive quantities of carbon (Della Sala, 2013). This contributes to many factors such as regulating global climate and most importantly for the Kermode bear, supporting the world’s most productive salmon runs (Della Sala, 2013). The Spirit bear’s distribution is heavily reliant on this distribution and availability of the pacific salmon (Klinka & Reimchen, 2009). Evidence suggests that even though the Kermode bear is a subspecies of the american black bear and share the same niche, they still have different distribution of feeding areas (Sachs, 2010). The american black bear relies heavily on in-land shrubs including whitebark pine (Pinus
Bears Brother. It may seem like a simple term or odd phrase when in reality, it’s the name of the boy in a book call When the Legends Die by Hal Borland. The boy goes by Thomas later in the book, but only after drastic changes are done with in his life. Thomas is 5 years old and lives a simple and easy life when it is all ripped away from him one day. His mother takes him away to the mountains to live where his dad is hiding and all of them begin to live by the old ways again.
Fair Bear has gone on another adventure, this time in Georgia. He has decided to visit the Ocmulgee National Park and Preserve Initiative. This includes the Indian Mounds, the Bond Swamp Wildlife Refuge, the Ocmulgee River, and historic Muscogee land.
Bear hunting is an extremely dangerous activity for one to partake in. There are many precautions one must take in order to successfully kill a bear. Although bears are typically calm creatures they can become extremely aggressive and dangerous if threatened. Therefore, one must be aware of their surroundings at all times and ready for any encounter. Normally bears are baited using some kind of container cut open with fruit and other strong smelling foods to draw the bears in. Though dangerous bear hunting does also provide a considerable amount of food for a family. Those you hunt typically do so in order to obtain the meat from the animal. A typical black bear weighs about 240 pounds on average. Though not all of that weight is eatable much of it
Spirit bears people call them spirit bears although there real name is Kermode bear the Kermode bears lives Outside of Columbia only however one in a million black bears is white the rest are black only maybe 100 exist spirit bears are really interesting . Only about 20 percent of the bears on Orr and Princess islands are white the rest are black they have white creamy fur with brown eyes dark nose pads and nearly white claws .
When Cole Mathews was sent to the remote Alaskan island he viewed it as a game, but it isn’t. Upon arrival Cole started off by burning down his shelter by using the white gas for his lantern and a match, which doesn’t serve him well in the long run. He has also encountered the Spirit Bear many times in the first few days and he even created weapons to try to kill it. After trying to throw a homemade spear at the Spirit Bear from point blank a lopsided match occurs between Cole and the suddenly ferocious bear. The Spirit Bear beats Cole to the edge of death and leaves Cole desperate to survive on the ground. Cole fights to survive by scrounging up anything he can find to eat, he starts by eating worms from the wet soil and slowly progresses.
The nose of the Louisiana black bear is longer, narrower and flatter than its relative, the American Black Bear. The Louisiana black bear also has large molar teeth. The Louisiana black bear is one of sixteen subspecies of the American black bear. It is also the state mammal of Louisiana. It was chosen due to its significance in the state wildlife. It is truly a magnificent creature. Male Louisiana black bears weigh between two hundred fifty and four hundred pounds. They also grow up to six feet in length. Females are much smaller. The bears live mainly off of berries and acorns and are not predators but will defend themselves in the presence of
In 2000 there was a black bear mom with 2 white bear cubs in Beause Manitoba. Also in 1997 a subadult white bear named Halo caused such a media stir that that the lesulater for Minnesota gave protection to all white bears. Unlucky for the lesulater because Halo is the only one since.
The Spirit Bear, or actually called the Kermode bear, lives in the Great Bear Rainforest in the Northwest area of the Canadian province British Columbia. Half way up the coast is where they live. “Scientifically, the white ones, along with their closest black relatives, belong to a subspecies of black bear.”(Smithsonian) The big white bear is probably around 300 lbs. It is cold where they live, and their fur definitely helps them keep warm. They hunt for things like salmon, and just eats it up. Right now, the some estimates say there are only around 100 of the specie left. They are very rare and definitely one of the rarest type of
This report is about three species that inhabit the Wyoming plains. One of these species is the black tailed prairie dog which inhabits nearly all of the U.S. and was at one time considered to be endangered. The second is the black footed ferret which was thought to be extinct until a small colony of these little predators was discovered on a ranch near Meeteetse Wyoming. The third and final animal mentioned in this report is the Wyoming toad. These toads are becoming increasingly scarce in the wild.
Estimating home ranges and understanding habitat use and the temporal distribution of that use is essential for understanding and conserving wildlife populations. As a concept, home range can be defined as the area traversed by an individual in its normal activities of foraging, mating and caring for young (Burt, 1943). In this way, a home range can be thought of as a spatial depiction of behaviors fundamental to a species’ evolution and persistence. While its ecological significance is clear, the anthropocentric importance of a species’ home range derives from its role in mediating human-wildlife interactions and wildlife management. The size and amount of overlap among individuals’ home ranges as well as the timing of habitat use within a home range will affect the probability and nature of human-wildlife encounters. In most jurisdictions, habitat management is a fundamental component of wildlife management programs(E. J. Bergman, Bishop, Freddy, White, & Doherty, 2014; K. Bergman, 2001; Fiedler, Landis, & Wratten, 2008). This holds true for American black bears (Ursus americanus) which are classified as a game species in 28 of the 41 states in which they are present (Hristienko & McDonald, 2007). Contemporary management programs often center on augmenting or maintaining high quality wildlife habitat, the definition of which has primarily depended on a basic understanding of the species’ general ecology.
As of 2012, this and the American black bear are the only bear species not classified as threatened by the IUCN. However, the Californian, North African (Atlas bear), and Mexican subspecies were hunted to extinction in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and many of the southern Asian subspecies are highly endangered. One of the smaller-bodied subspecies, the Himalayan brown bear, is critically endangered, occupying only 2% of its former range and threatened by uncontrolled poaching for its parts. The Marsican brown bear, one of several currently isolated populations of the main Eurasian brown bear race, in central Italy is believed to have a population of just 30 to 40
Bear is a true carnivore, but if not prevented the black bear could be a huge problem to humans.
