The Blind Slide: Evolution of a Game is a novel that was written by Michael Lewis in 2006. It is the life story of professional football player Michael Oher. This young man came from nothing to actually making it to the professional level of athletics. This is mostly in part to Sean and Leigh Ann Touhy of Memphis, Tennessee. This book shows the struggles of his childhood and how he became to be the person that he is now with Sean and Leigh Ann’s help. This novel was made into a film, The Blind Side in 2009. Although the novel and film have a lot in common there are also some differences. Many of these differences have their own set of reasons on why. In the movie while Michael is learning football he is portrayed to be very “soft” so they have to find a way to make him tougher. Leigh Ann knows that he scored high in the category of protective instincts so she gives Michael the analogy of the offense being his family. She knows that Michael will do anything to protect the Tuohy family so she tell him to protect their family. From that moment on Michael does just that on the field. I think this is highlighted so much in the movie because it gives the viewer an emotional connection to Michael. When the viewer watches this scene it shows them how caring and sensitive Michael really is. The viewer will be very sympathetic at how Michael will do anything to protect his family. In both the list of famous football coaches that come to recruit Michael is the same. It is very interesting that for the film they were actually able to get the real coaches to come out and participate in the film. I’m sure that getting the coaches from these schools was not easy. I am sure it is not every day that Phillip Fulmer (Tennessee), Lou Holtz (South Carolina) , Houston Nutt (Arkansas), Ed Orgeron (Ole Miss) , Nick Saban (LSU), Tommy Tuberville (Auburn) just have time to go out of their way to be in a movie.
