Human trafficking is one of the many faces of organized crime. Human trafficking is a broad term which contains trafficking for the purpose of sex along with the exploitation of labor. Currently, there are 20.9 million victims of sex slavery (Stacy.j.cecchet 2014 482) whom have or are suffering suffer inhumane circumstances and consequences. Sex trafficking is one of the largest criminal activities in the world (Stacy 249). Vulnerable women and children are taken advantage of and thrown into sex slavery, yet there is no explanation available as to how women and children are taken and thrown into the industry within countries such as Canada and the United States of America (482 Stacy j Cecchet 2014), which have human rights protection. Sex slavery leaves everlasting mental and physical effects on the abused women and children being trafficked. Even though sex trafficking is a crime it is also, for a lack of better words, an industry which would cease to exist if it was not for the supply and demand for women and children.

Human trafficking is a prominent problem within the United States that is often overlooked. The definition of human trafficking is, “Human trafficking - the illegal practice of procuring or trading in human beings for the purpose of prostitution, forced labor, or other forms of exploitation” (“Human trafficking”). People in the United States believe that human trafficking is a problem that occurs in other less developed countries compared to the United States. What these individuals do not realize is that human trafficking occurs on American soil contrary to popular belief. The United States is one of the top three destination countries of human trafficking and human trafficking is a top criminal enterprise across the world (“WEAVE, Inc.”).

Globally, about 20 to 30 million people are involved in the human trafficking system, and of those, 14,500 to 17,500 people are trafficked in the United States every year. Human trafficking is more prevalent today then ever before. It is the third largest crime internationally. People are abused and taken advantage of. According to the article, “11 Facts About Human Trafficking,” on average, a person is forced into the system around age 9, and the majority of victims are women and girls, with a small percentage of men and boys. America is the land of the free and yet something as awful as human sex trafficking occurs in our very own backyard each and everyday. Human trafficking, or the selling and buying of people, is a well-hidden yet prominent issue within today’s society. It is both an immoral and horrific topic that needs brought to attention and dealt with. When human beings are manipulated into work, sexual servitude, or economic hardship, human trafficking is occurring. In the year of 2006, only one individual is convicted of human trafficking per 800 victims (UNGIFT). By looking at straight statistics, reasons human trafficking happens, and the toll it has on people, it is very clear that this is a major issue that is happening in our world.

Human trafficking is in every state of this nation and in every country across the world. It’s in cities, suburbs, and rural areas; being hidden in plain view; unseen by so many. In 2015, 17,500 cases of sex trafficking were reported in the United States (Chawla). This is only the cases that were reported. It is estimated that there were about 20.9 million cases across the world that never got reported in 2015 (Lize). There are more human slaves in the world today than ever before in history (Straker). The purpose of this paper is to educate the reader on human trafficking in the United States and in the World, and prove how bad it has become.

Over the past several years, human trafficking has become a sizable world-wide problem. Human Trafficking has had a considerable affect on the World and United States. To combat this, several laws and initiatives have been enacted. While this allows for some headway in combating this problem, there are still several things that we can do to help. This review of literature on Human Trafficking focuses on these areas and provides the information on the steps that can help combat this epidemic.

They are being bought and sold all over the country, used for sex commercial, advertisements, and forced labor. Trafficking is illegal in all countries of the U.S. and it is the third largest crime in the world. In the United States, estimates suggest that over 300,000 women and children become victims of commercial sexual exploitation in relation to human trafficking. Sexual exploitation plays a huge part on individual victims, who often suffer physical and emotional abuse, rape, threats against self and family, passport theft, and even death. ABSTRACT: The prevalence of human trafficking in the United States is something law enforcement and policy makers are attempting to address. Unfortunately, this crime is growing in number of incidents despite these efforts. This analysis examined the victims of human trafficking, showing how there are a broad range of victims in human trafficking. This addresses the misconception that only persons outside of the U.S. are victims of human trafficking. Also discussed is the need for better training amongst local law enforcement officers, due to the role they have will confronting cases of human trafficking. Training for these officers would include education about human trafficking, and how to identify human trafficking. There also needs to specific policies in place for when officers do encounter human trafficking incidents. Finally, the policies addressing human trafficking are address. Most of the research agreed that the specific policies (The Palermo Protocol and the Trafficking and Violence Protection Act) have good definitions as to what classifies human trafficking. However, it is recommended that a more victim central approach is used by those handling the cases because that would be beneficial to the victims and prosecution of traffickers.

In order for my audience to know more about human trafficking, I need to know their interest and knowledge level. Human trafficking can be a difficult issue, but it can be easier if you understand the basics. The proposal will evaluate and educate why human trafficking needs to be reduced or eliminated. I will also further investigate the purpose of human trafficking and the criminal acts associated with it. A human trafficking criminal can be any person who is the recipient, transporter, recruiter, and harboring of that person. This information can help us learn from what exploits victims go through when dealing with human trafficking. Human trafficking is an international problem, statistics shows that between the year 2007 and 2010 women composed the majority of victims globally, 80 percent was women and girls. Human trafficking is the world’s fastest increasing crime after drug handling.

This research paper dives into the world of human trafficking looking into key details about the ethical implications of human trafficking as well as proposed solutions. With information such as statistics, methods of trafficking and the ending of trafficking that is found from websites from organizations that are dedicated to ending trafficking, the involvement of all countries are cited as necessary in ending this worldly crime. Information was found through University of South Florida’s library system and websites with information pertaining to their organization’s attempts at ending human trafficking. Articles utilized include Unintended Effects of United Nations Intervention, From Bush to Obama: Rethinking Sex and Religion in the U.S. Initiative to Combat Human Trafficking, Human Trafficking, and Supply and Demand: Human Trafficking in the Global Economy. In addition to these scholarly articles, websites used include the organizational websites of UNODC and UNICEF.
