As the rapid development of science and technology, our world is becoming a global village, people within the village can easily access to the opposite part once they can access the Internet. However, the border between geographic may be weakened while the border between culture still exists. The book Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down by Anne Fadiman tells us a true story of culture shock regarding health care.

I am impressed and touched by the story very much. In this book, the author described a tragic story about a Hmong girl Lia. The conflict and difference between western treatment and the belief in Hmong typical family, Lee family towards the struggling with Lia’s epilepsy in the major plot of the book. Furthermore, the author also introduced about the Hmong’s history, background as well as culture to help the readers better understand the behavior in the Lee family.

In my point of view, there are three important themes from the story. Firstly, the communication is essential and important in healthcare settings. As we all know, the language barrier is the main problem to be solved when interacting with another culture. In other words, communication is a two-way interaction. Only people can understand each other, the conversation and consultation could start.
