The Dark Wall The bell rang and we all squirmed out of Mrs. Clifford’s room. Everyone with the same waning, goad. Just before we pressed through the iron guard we all hear a scream. A voice so high pitched it sent a shrill through every one of us and echoed down the pale halls. Right, then we knew we were about to have our ID cards handed to us. We drop them in the thermoset polymer pale with the sound of a marble pendulum. Out we go hands on fire, heads melting and sit under an azure, impalpable extremity. The shade from the tree froze us as it blocked out the sun. The whistle blew and we all strutted along the side of the blacktop. Just as we get to the edge we become a herd of gazelles running from a pack of hungry lions. The first …show more content…
Mrs.Gentry was my next door neighbor and I never knew that for the 5 years I went to the same school she was teaching at. What has happened to this world such that we don’t even know our neighbors? The following day I go into the garden and gather the mutated zucchini, tomatoes, and chilis. Mom wraps the in a woven and jaded looking basket. Ding-Dong, I can hear the doorbell from outside the door of Mrs.Gentry’s house and the gentle stomping of feet growing louder yet staying quiet coming to the door. My teacher appears and I present her with the basket of fresh garden produce which is truly organic, as that is what I thought. Only until a few years later I thought that the seeds may come from genetically modified organisms with other chemicals and pesticides and whatnot in them. Glatorian X A few clicks here and a few pegs there and voila, you have a fully fledged pile of no imagination and utter madness. The whole tub is emptied out onto the floor and pieces are scattered under the chair, in between the shelves, under my pants, on my t-shirt, and all over the floor. I scuffle through the smooth avalanche to find the one, the final addition to my most amazing creation ever, Glatorian X. I was the outstanding, the lone ranger, that one crazy kamikaze, the one whose friend was in a different city that was half an hour away if you drive. That year everyone wanted the new and completely idiotic Wii U which is horrible compared to the Wii but not me. The 3DS XL was in the
As my car climbed the hill, my heart sunk into my stomach. I parked as far away from my friends as I could and quickly exited the car, not once looking at them. Now it was every man for himself. Emerging into the open air, I suddenly became aware of myself. I could feel my puffy, blood-shot eyes. My palms became slimy. My fingers clinched into a fist and my nails dug into my skin. My sight blurred and my tunnel of vision tried to focus on the front door. Every step seemed more awkward than the last. Eyes pierced me from all sides. I felt naked. My body trembled like a sheep in the midst of wolves.
Colson Whitehead once said, “Let the broken glass be broken glass, let it splinter into smaller pieces and dust and scatter. Let the cracks between things widen until they are no longer cracks but the new places for things”. In the memoir “The Glass Castle,” author Jeannette Walls faces despair and turmoil as a result of her impoverished and dysfunctional upbringing. As Jeannette grows up, she watches her father Rex fail to reach his full potential and his dream to build a Glass Castle shatter as his alcoholism takes control. Aware of the devastation her father was causing, she begins to slowly lose faith in him but doesn’t fail to escape her destructive household and pursue her dreams of becoming a journalist. Due to her parent’s lack of parenting and being forced to fend for herself, Jeannette developed a sense of responsibility to care for others and make amends to improve the family’s lifestyle. Despite the turbulence and destruction her parents had caused over the years, unlike her father, Jeannette was able to find the strength to overcome obstacles, developing characteristics that ultimately lead her to achieving her dream, thus illustrating that adversity has the power to shape one’s identity.
Next, the authors write about how food has been modified throughout the years. They use the example of “cultivated rice, wheat, corn, soy, potatoes, and tomatoes have very little in common with their ancestors.” They use this example to go on to reveal that genetically modifying foods is nothing more than hybridization, or the mating of different plants of the same species to integrate the desired traits from several different varieties into a leading variety. The authors use the example of the tomato and how it is commonly bred with wild tomatoes to make the plant more resistant to pathogens, nematodes, and fungi while eradicating any unwanted traits from the wild plant such as toxins. This example, as a whole is a brilliant use of ethos. It displays that genetically modified foods are healthy and safe because it compares this new technology to a technique that has been done for thousands of years that has never been thought of as dangerous. More importantly, this comparison shows that the authors are credible and that they use their evidence wisely and correctly.
In Berlin, the Iron Curtain had many purposes. It was there to protect, to separate and to enforce a way of life for East Berliners. Firstly, The Wall gave meaning to people’s lives in different ways. It defined where they were to go, who they were to see and who they were to be. For the countless Stasi and informers, it gave them a purpose and an importance in society, and after The Wall came down, that purpose was lost and yearned for. Secondly, The Wall and the controlling ways of the Stasi loomed over the lives of East Berliners, and its implementation was just one of many extreme measures to minimalise Capitalism and encourage Communism. Thirdly, although The Wall

The night drew closer around the individuals who, some in dreams, some in panic, seemed to react to impending danger and turned, some to nightmares, some to an eerie calm, as those on death row that accepted their demise for what it was, an abrupt shattering of their existence. Be that as it may, however, some did not wish to go so simply. While some wished for a calm ending, but embraced nevertheless a less subtle end, that of fire and mutilation, others feared it for what it was, or what it could be. Some feared being lost, trapped in a dungeon of previously sound architecture, to watch the edges of their vision turn to the blackness of
Throughout reading The Glass Castle, the idea of Rex’s glass castle came up a fair amount. All through Jeanette’s childhood, her father aspires to create what he calls ‘the glass castle’. He describes it as having “a glass ceiling and thick glass walls and even a glass staircase ”(Walls 25). To Rex, the glass castle was symbolic as a sense of solidarity, I think all he wanted was to stay in one place with his family and to have enough money to avoid the ‘skedaddle’. To Rex, this also was a representation of transparency.
A growing number of foods we intake on a daily basis are composed of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). DNA from other kinds of organisms, bacteria, or viruses are used to change the DNA of GMOs so that they can counteract pesticides. According to Bill Freese, “GMOs are present in 60 to 70 percent of foods on US supermarket shelves” (1) . Not only is the food itself a problem, but the method of growing GMOs can potentially harm the soil, in turn decreasing bio-diversity. Purchasing non genetically modified foods is a better decision. Despite the convenience of junk food, anyone can live a healthier lifestyle by making an effort to eat non gmo, raw, organic, and vegan foods.
Deafening screams ricocheted off the gray, blood-smeared cement walls. My body became blanketed with a cold sweat, that made it hard to decide whether I was warm or freezing. I received small glances of my surroundings as the strobe light blinded me. My nose was filled with a pungent odor, making it impossible to breathe. I thought I knew what I was getting myself into, but I was wrong.
Throughout the tour with Ms. Pedraza we were subjected to a short walk. The tour began with an example of a certified organic field. The tour then led us on a short walk to test plots of grass that is engineered to possibly become a solution to conventional grasses by means of drought resistance. Right next to the plots of test grass there were also huge bushels of Elephant grass that we're going to be converted into biofuels. We then walked across Barstow Ave as a class and observed conventional corn sprouts that are coordinated and planted weekly to keep up with the corn demand of the Gibson Farmers Market. Throughout the entire tour the most distinguishable
The preference for “clarity over nuance” which means American people prefer simplicity over complexity when American people access significant declarations and military activities. American people vote their presidents so that American people like politicians announce the statement with the easily accessible idea, even though politicians lie to them, or the statement is wrong. Politicians deceive American people with the easily accessible idea that “...American people in their pursuit of happiness...” (38) according to Andrew J Bacevich’s “The Real World War IV”. Politicians simply state its purpose that the elimination of terror instead of the founding purpose that grab the accessible oil in the Middle East because American people prefer to hear the statement of simply understanding from their politicians who they vote. Also, American people prefer to see a simplicity in the military school in order to pursue their happiness. However, in “The Naked Citadel”, Susan Faludi exposed that there was no admission for women, sex-discrimination, and violence, and etc. many bad news in the military school. But the ugly and relentlessly truth deeply hurt American people’s feeling. Even if the reality is around American people, and we are familiar with it, the reality is too horrible to accept it. Same as soldiers, Tim O’Brien attempts to emphasize the war story is all about human’s love and memory, it is not about war in the “How to Tell a True War Story”. He is trying to explain that
The Bartlett’s are a family of four that live in the San Joaquin Valley in rural California. Mark Bartlett, the father, is 39-years-old and Maggie, his wife, is 37-years-old. They have two daughters, Kate, who is 12-years-old, and Sarah, who is nine-years-old. For several generations, Mark’s family owned and operated a small private farm that produced mainly soy and corn. However, in the recent years with the rapid growth of Monsanto and other similar agriculture conglomerates, the Bartlett’s have been forced to shut down the operation of their farm. Last year they were faced with a lawsuit against Monsanto wherein Monsanto claimed that the Bartlett’s had illegally obtained Monsanto-trademarked seed. Following this lawsuit, the Bartlett’s have
Shirley Jackson was born in San Francisco, California on December 14th 1916. From an early age she was at odds with her parents expectations. Within these expectations her mother had an obsession with appearance that put her further away from her. Jackson began writing in 1930 as a teenager and grew up in a suburban atmosphere; this later became the subject of her first novel “The Road through the Wall” in 1948. From California she moved cross country to Rochester, New York in 1934. Her university education began at the University of Rochester in 1936 but withdrew that same year. Jackson reentered the following year, 1937, to Syracuse University. This is where her writing blossomed. As an undergraduate her story “Janice” was published in the Syracuse University magazine in 1938 and the following year won second prize in a poetry contest. Jackson began a literary journey, Spectre, with Stanley Edgar Hyman and was in a romantic relationship with him as well. In 1940, the same year she graduated, with a dual major in English and speech, she married Stanley Hyman.
After the defeat of Hitler, Germany was in 4 sections. The U.S.A., United Kingdom, France, and the Soviet Union all had a portion of Germany. In 1961, Germany’s capital, Berlin, had a hard time.East Berlin’s government did not agree with the West side. That was when the Berlin Wall was built. The German Democratic Republic(GDR)was the reason for the separation of the city. The East side was bad and the West side was good or more free.To go to the other side, there were checkpoints you had to cross.”Checkpoint Charlie”, the most famous checkpoint, was one of them.
The bell signalling the end of second period hadn’t sounded, yet. Or maybe it had.maybe she missed it amidst the screams. She wondered if it was all over, perhaps somewhere in a distant corner of the school, students and teachers rejoiced and hugged each other knowing there was nothing left to fear. No matter how quite it was outside fear still rushed through her body, mentally and physically. She knew she couldn’t get up. Fear had paralysed her. She had fled the library and fled her way through the southern hallway when it began. The hall was infused with kinetic horror. An aimless frenzy of kids and adults bound in a reckless pack of mass confusion, like and ant hill being washed away with a hose. No new knew what to do. They just ran. Lisa couldn’t run. The fear had taken ahold of her and would allow her to move any faster than a sloth in a waking
