Period 3
The Book Thief In the Book Thief we are introduced to an interesting character named Rudy. Rudy was a “bony legged, sharp teethed, blue eyed boy with blonde hair.” In chapter eight we are introduced to the character when Liesel plays soccer with the Himmel Street children. Since that part of the book we got to witness the ten year old boy grow and go through significant problems that eventually tore apart his life. Within the book we witness the characteristics of Rudy slowly change over time. When we first see the young boy we witness a young, full headed young boy with big dreams about being a sprinter like Jessie owen; all the way to the point where his demeanor completely changed and he awaits for death. Rudy’s story all starts within chapter eight when we were introduced to the kids on Himmel Street. Liesel becomes great friends with Rudy and we got to connect with Rudy and we knew him as a spirited young child that was interested in Leisel. In the following chapter we got to know about his interest in Leisel a little better as we learned about the “Jesse Owens incident.” In the book Rudy says, "I'll bet you a kiss I can beat you," this quote opens up to Rudy and his crush towards leisel. At this point in the book we know that Rudy is happy and energetic because he has a Leisel, and all he wants to do is spend more and more time with her because she makes him happy. Rudy was feeling that wonderful, scary feeling of liking somebody and
As Rudy is growing older he realizes that his life isn’t going so great. He barely made it out of high school, and he notices that he’s not going to get anywhere in life if he keeps this up. Once he gets into college he sees that his dream job of being a Diesel Engineer is crushed. Rudy Puana decided to make the same exact mistakes he did in high school, he partied, never went to his classes, and he never studied for his tests and finals.
Over the course of reading The Book Thief, readers will come to know about Markus Zusak’s constant use of descriptive words, figurative language, and character plots throughout the story. In one particular part of the novel, Zusak shows an example of all three of these points to support one of the many central themes he gives us. While Liesel is standing in front of the burnt offerings near the town hall and the square after a Hitler rally, she sees a book underneath all of the hot ash. This moment allows Zusak to go into explicit detail to make a point about the significance of the moment to the reader. In The Book Thief, Zusak uses vocabulary that evokes recklessness and stealthiness, personification about books, and Liesel’s internal
Rudy as a young american boy had great dream’s in sports especially in Football. He wanted to be involved in this sport, but everyone around him said that he couldn’t. Now as a young man in college he is out to get everyone who tried to prove him wrong. Now he will prove them wrong now. Why did Rudy make these goals? Who did Rudy ask for help and advies? how did Rudy achieve these goals? What could have Rudy done different? These are the main questions that will be answer as you read. Rudys story is about goal setting and and rebounding from failure.
Rudy Steiner is Liesel Meminger’s best friend. He has been by Liesel’s side at her best and even at her worst. He was the one that walked home with Liesel after she beat up Ludwig, got a book that was thrown into a river for her, stopped her from chasing Max and wanted a kiss. Rudy always wanted to help Liesel and would do anything to do so. Liesel was not judged by him for the actions she made. Rudy and Liesel had fun together as children. Children in this time period had to grow up very fast because of what was going on. Rudy went with Liesel
In chapter 1 in starts off telling us about him and his struggles that he is faced with from birth that he can't control. He had freckles, red hair, and he coughed up pink froth because his right lung was full of liquid, which caused strep pneumo a rare strain of pneumonia. With those challenges he gets called many names such as Fireball, Richie Cunningham, Ronald McDonald, and Rudolph the Red- Headed Human, tampon head and many more. Then in chapter 2 Rudy finally starts to learn how to block all the negative energy and name calling out.
Then when his mom applied for him to go to college they wouldn’t take him because his grades were so bad in high school. Then they said they would take him if he did this program over the summer and that would let him get into University of Hawaii at Manoa. So his mom signed him up for that and Rudy went off and did the program. He went to college and he also was messing around and didn’t care about his grades in college. All he wanted to do was hang out with his Hawaiian friends and party. Then one day Ruby and his friend Chris were watching this tv show called General Hospital and then Rudy told Chris “I think i’m going to be a doctor,” then Chris said “Braddah you ain’t no doctor.” When Chris said that it mad Rudy more determined to become a doctor. After that day Rudy changed his whole style of how he was in college, he started hanging out with different people, he finally studied, and he was not messing around anymore. Then Rudy took the MCAT test and got a good score and
Rudy’s perception of himself changed over the course because when he used to live in Hawaii and he used to always skip school. For example he would also run around naked get drunk and smoke weed with his friends in Kahaluu. In the book it clearly states “ every one of my highschool teachers would tell you i was hardly the next einstein “ that means to me that his teachers thought he wasn’t the smartest kid out there. The book also states “ i would party and get drunk with the townies on the weekends and go diving with my kahaluu friends on the weekdays “. I can relate to Rudy’s life because when the waves are big and the swells come in i always skip school just to go surf. In conclusion i think Rudy changed because he wanted to live a better
In the novel book thief Rudy and Liesel face many conflicts as they get involved with criminality purposes, lose parts of their family, and endure through the suffering of learning Nazi culture. Rudy and Liesel both experience conflict in their lives due to the effects of Nazi culture, war, and the economy in ways that are both similar and different from each other. The effects of these conflicts have impacted them by influencing them to steal, having their family drafted to war as well as hiding captives and learning the culture of Nazism. The Nazi culture inflicts many difficulties in the lives of Rudy and Liesel since Rudy experiences learning in the Hitler Youth in a more aggressive manner whereas Liesel strives to hide a captive Jew that
Rudy was Liesel's best friend her age and was their for her since day one. He took her to school her first day and stood up for her when she was getting picked on. Liesel was in love and didn't even know it, she had a crush on Jesse Owens. Constantly trying to receive a kiss out of Liesel, Rudy wouldn't receive one until it's too late. Liesel's affection towards Rudy would sadly never be fulfilled, she lost her best friend and partner in crime. Shes learns from Rudy that trust can go a long way. Rudy was as loyal as they come, he never lied to her and always helped her when she was
Rudy’s perception of himself has changed overtime. He went from being a typical hard headed boy who earned bad grades and made bad decisions to someone who wants to be something in life, well a doctor to be more specific. Getting to where he was he met some deviant people along the way. In the Red Headed Hawaiian book it tells us the story of Rudy puana who never knew he was a fighter, he had a rough childhood from being teased because of his hair to being sick as a young kid. In other words, he hadn’t really known he was fighting, fighting against the bullying and fighting for his life. Finally, one day as he was slowly settling down he had said he was going to become a doctor instead of wasting time thinking about what he was gonna do in
When dreams or flashbacks are used, it’s important for them to reveal something more each time. What does Rudy’s dream reveal? The dream is actually more of a premonition. Is he psychic? Is it needed? Considering eliminating it as it doesn’t fit with the over story type. That fits with a supernatural story.
Using the Structural functional approach one can see that Rudy completely defied all of the set functions of his family. The families policies would have been for Rudy to finish high school, work in the factory and then settle down. However Rudy broke this norm and caused a lot of conflict in his family due to his decisions. I feel that this is the best approach for this movie. because the story relies so heavily on the structure and guidelines set by the
His determination and loyalty make him very likeable, but also troublesome. His determination can be seen when he desperately wants to show Franz??? that he is capable of being successful, ‘In the middle of August, a Hitler Youth carnival was being held, and Rudy was intent on winning four events: the 1500, 400, 200, and of course, the 100.’ (Zucker ...), he was so intent that he actually won three out of the four events. However, this determination leads to the Nazis coming to recruit Rudy for a special school, causing his parents to decide to enrol Alex Steiner, Rudy's father.
The movie Rudy is based on Rudy Ruettiger, a kid from Joliet, Illinois who had a dream of playing at his dream school, Notre Dame. He has to overcome adversity in being smaller than most players in the division one college football level, and finding out that he suffers from a learning disability that has prevented him from attending Notre Dame. He overcomes his adversity and finally gains admittance to Notre Dame, where he walks onto the football teams practice squad and continues his job as a maintenance worker at the football facility. Eventually, after constant rejection and let downs Rudy is allowed to dress for the last home game of his senior year after his teammates give up their spot
Liesel’s life was difficult near the beginning of the novel. She was separated from her parents, and lost her brother. After joining her new foster family, she would have to work harder to adjust to it and it will not be easy. When Liesel was out with Rudy on their apple stealing activities, when Rudy was then caught by one of the nazis from injuring his leg. The nazi then disciplined Rudy by beating him up and they cut also his hair with a knife. After Rudy got disciplined, Liesel carries Rudy to the mayor's house. On page 251 Liesel says “I carried Rudy softly through the broken streets… with him I tried a little harder at comforting.” this shows that she was trying hard to comfort him even though she was already trying to carry Rudy. It shows that even when she’s at one hundred percent, she tries to reach one hundred and 10 percent. Near the end of the novel, on page 528, in the book written by Liesel called The Book Thief and on the last
